Truly the greatest song of all times to my ears, I meant the original by Procol Harum but this version by Annie Lennox is simply brilliant, excellent and magnificent and certainly stands on its own without comparison almost as if it is a different song as pointed rightly by ronstadtfanaz. Wow, I never knew this song was about a bunch of gorgeous super models walking around a nice hotel. Actually, I'm pretty sure the dudes from Procol Harum were envisioning long legged models dancing in their hotel room when then recorded this.

I really don't like this version and video. the original version is a song about a light topic (seducing a girl while both being drunk and high) but it creates a very intense atmosphere, so strong that there are still debates on the "true" deep meaning of the song (some of them being about drug overdose or suicide). this version totally rape that feeling away, casting everything into an aseptic world filled with lifeless mannequins, where the original topic of this song lays trivially as it is.

I think the song is about a trophy wife having a 1 night stand with a musician. "as the miller told his tale a face at first just ghostly turned a whiter shade of pale" The miller is a reference to the miller's tale in The Canterbury tales a story of a trophy wife having an affair. There is a line in the original that says she is on shore leave and a vestal virgin. Vestal Virgins were keepers of the sacred hearth (housewife), shore leave is what sailors get so they can go into town for a night.
