Phenix was sold!!! But is staying in Phenix... Now, Islanders, columbis, florida, nashville and now New jersey all have a chance to be moved! Way to screw an intire franchise Kovelchuck... Go Home!!!
I was raised on jets hockey, and it broke my heart to see them leave. But i hate to say that i don't see winnipeg being able to support another NHL team. Not enough people with enough money who are willing to spend it. And even if the MTS center can be expanded to 18,000. That is half the battle, there is still little to no parking available in that area. The city shot themselves in the foot when building it there.
As of late, King Bettman was reported to have been seen in Winnipeg. Several days ago I heard a writer from the Globe and Mail being interviewed on Team1040 in Vancouver and he's saying there's some credibility to rumors of an NHL team returning to Winnipeg. Later that day Manitoba Moose radio play by play announcer (Brian Munns?) also being interviewed by Team1040 made similar claims.
It would be very good news if a team returned to Winnipeg. Hope it does.
I don't think there is any credence to Gary Bettman being in Winnipeg at the time he was rumoured to be here, but hopefully the old adage, "where there's smoke, there's fire," holds true.
If Brian Munz is now saying it's a possibility, there has to be something to it, because a few short years ago, he was nothing but negative about the NHL in Winnipeg...
@ethicomm I heard that if the phoenix Coyotes go under, and theres no choice but to relocate they will move to winnipeg. Possible as soon as the 2011- 2012 season. Sad part is that if winnipeg does move into the MTS centre, they'll have to kick the Manitoba Moose out to thunder bay Ontario.
Atlanta, Tampa, Miami, Phoenix, Nashville, Charlotte = Total Bullshit.
Hockey is not an American sport. It's a REGIONAL sport. Those cities (including Dallas in my opinion) have no business having hockey teams.
You will get better support from smaller cities up north.
NHL needs to return to Hartford, Quebec City, Winnipeg and add teams in Seattle, Portland, Hamilton, and maybe even Saskatoon, Victoria, or North Dakota.
@FAITHandLOGIC There ARE Fans in Tampa who DO care about the Lightning, I'm one of the many! btw, Charlotte is not the home of the Hurricanes. They play in Raleigh! Miami is not home to the stinkin' Panthers, They play in Sunrise! Get your info straight, please!
move florida, phoenix, tampa and nashville up north, to give hamilton, winnipeg, quebec city and halifax teams, making 10 canadian and 19 american teams get rid of atlanta - this would make it roughly 1/3rd of nhl teams canadian, which is in proportion to what the canadian teams already generate in revenue - right now the 6 canadian (out of 30) nhl teams provide %30 of the nhl's revenue!
But, maybe if Winnipeg can get 16,000 people a game, they could get 6,000,000 more in ticket sales and maybe another 500,000 in concessions. That would mean a profit of 6,000,000. I think it would be great there. I think I heard somewhere about the MTS Centre expanding to 18,000 somewhere. Trust me, Winnipeg can support a team. Phoenix is screwed if they don't make the playoffs next year (for extra revenues).
I think it is possible for the NHL to return to Winnipeg! I'm a Wild fan, I remembere when we lost the North Stars to Dallas. When we tried to get the NHL back to Minnesota, we had to build a new arean, huge fan support, good ownership, and fundings to get the team, thw Wild are already doing well, they made the playoffs Three of their first Seven Seasons (Lockout doesn't count), and each game is sold out!
I believe Winnipeg could support the budget, and Mark Chipman (True North Sports & Entertainment) must believe that as well, or there wouldn't be talk at all about the subject. The Moose would be replaced by the NHL, goes without saying; as for the Goldeyes, I don't think they factor into the equation.
except in USA the teams pay less taxes than in Canada, since we are a socialist country. However, I think they would still do well, because Edmonton did with 16839 seats
I don't about 18000, but it is expandable... At the very least an additional 12 luxury suites and a row of seats around the upper bowl, without any major renovations needed! To expand to 18000 would be a major project, and may not be cost-effective. The limited seating, however it may end up being (16500?) would ensure supply and demand.
The one story I saw after the MTS was Built was that if one day the NHL would return to the Peg was that for less than $1 mil they could expand the stands to accompany 18,300 Patrons...Dunno if that plan is still on the table or not though.
winnipeg sadly along with any other canadian city that could support an nhl team will never see the day we get another nhl team...bettman does not want another hockey team in canada nor alot of american owners...maybe with all the empty seats in nashville along with carolina and the other american duds sombody will wake up and notce this ,bettman sure will not ....
The MTS Centre would be the home of the new franchise, which currently seats 15003 and has 48 luxury suites; it could be expanded -- if necessary -- with another 12 suites or skyboxes, and another row of seats around the upper bowl (as I understand it).
The Moose were 4th overall in AHL attendance for the 2006-2007 season, at over 7500 avg per game, with a maximum of 20-25 free tix per game.
Why? Hope. The Jets meant a whole lot, to a whole lot of people, myself included. It was not fair to have our hearts ripped out when they left. The possibility of a return -- however near or far that possibility might be -- gives us hope. And without hope, you have nothing.
You saw the title of the video, and yet you still "wasted your time" watching it.
If you DON'T care, then why bother watching the video? The description is clear enough.
I can't believe it's been four years since I added this video...

the only southern teams that are doing okay are the california teams

Keep the damn salary cap down. Those figures they used are the same across the board for all teams.
No wonder most teams do not make profits.

You don't play hockey in a stadium, you play hockey in an arena -- and it is well-documented that the MTS Centre is big enough.

So, if the NHL did return, would that mean the new NHL franchise would play in the MTS Centre?
By the way, what kind of support does the Moose have at the moment? Just curious about that.
