  • I love Etendarts and Alizés. Havent 't you seen the film Le Ciel sur la Tete?

  • nice

  • That is one badassed catapult.

As an ex-CVA deck hand I know that the Cat Track on the Foch is about 1/2 the length of U.S. Carriers.

It sure is good to watch carrier based Naval Aviation, especially the F8 bits.

There is a part of me that says a skilled F8 driver would be a tuff match for a Tomcat or F/A-18 driver in a shootout, even today.

F8s will do things that even the F16s have a hard time doing.

Plus the fact that F8s have a huge gun advantage over most modern fighters.

  • And the UK want to cancel the new carriers. Nothing is as efective for imidiate defence.

  • I used to launch F8s on the USS Coral Sea and that cat (catapault) stroke seems extremely short on that French carrier by comparison. The F8s are so light and overpowered , you can see easy they lunch !

  • This is great footage. Seeing the F8's especially. French carrier tradition goes back a long way; they know how to do it. Questions: were the Breguet's used for AEW before the French Navy had the E2 Hawkeye? Why did the French Navy never use the Jaguar-M?

  • @matapan50 thanks for the hommage!

    yes,the breguet alizé's mission was exactly that:AEW.

and the jaguar M proved too heavy, too big for our carriers, too hard to maintain(on the contrary of it's ground version, which you could fix out of chewing gum and staples,mc gyver style ;D) and most of all:too expensive

    nice beast though

  • @jetaddicted thanks for the info! Best wishes to French Marine & everyone in France

  • I don't care what other people may say, but those French naval aviators are among the finest men out there.

  • Good old days... when the french navy had two carriers and a decent air wing. that movie was shot aboard the Foch, f-8e crusaders, super-etendard, alizé, alouette III, Etendard IV P. nowadays only the super-etendards and the alouette III fly with the navy ... when the charles de gaulle is available!

  • For your information and accuracy, you should also include the Dassault Rafale, E2C Hawkeye, MPA Atlantique, Dauphin SA365F, NH90, Panther...

  • @MONSTERSPROWINE I know what you mean, just like for the US Navy was so much better when they had F-14's, S-3's, A-7's, and A-6's. All we have now is just Super Hornets and Hawkeyes.

  • Are those sparks meant to be there?

  • Sure, the deck's made in metal, as well as the arresting hook, so when the hook hits the deck, that's what it does.

  • Amazing video
