Even in a damaged version, her wonderful voice shines through. The more of her music I hear, the more I learn to love it, and to realize what a talented musician she was. I miss her!

Maddy Prior was fine in this. I'm never sure about the added rhythms but that's taste. She's so good with June Tabor (The Silly Sisters) but I don't think they recorded this. Nor did Anne Briggs - the greatest of all.
Steeleye Span did do it, but Maddy wasn't the lead vocalist for that track, Gay Wood was. Dolores Keane did it (once with John Faulkner, again on that album with Rita Erikson) and she did it very well. Norma Waterson sang it on Waterson:Carthy's Common Tongue. It's been done quite a number of times, though. Sandy's is beautiful, too.

I just have a feeling it was on Almanac, the LP released by Steeleye Span in 1971Have to check this out
celticboy1950 2 years ago
Steeleye does do a version but with a lot of added verses , so it's not too similar.
dullsvillain 2 years ago
@celticboy1950 Yes, it's on their very first album with Gay Woods singing, but I'm sure Maddy would have done it even better.
nan1539 1 year ago
@nan1539 Perhaps Maddy may have sung it differently, but perhaps this is a more traditional rendition??Who is to say?
