sounds similar to the electric wheelchair drumline tune by santa clara vanguard drum & bugle corps. could be the other way around though and they pulled it from him. hmmmm nice beats tho
i found this vid more than a year ago and am pretty sure i've watched/listened to it every day since. gadd's groove is unmatched by any i've seen, and ralph's minimalistic additions are anything but minimal. fricken great stuff.
Asides from the amazing skill here, which I've listened to over and over again throughout the years - you have to admire that considering this is supposedly filmed in 1983 when recording technology and techniques were still shabby round the edges and developing, that snare/kit is tuned exceptionally well and recorded crystal clear - especially for live. (P.S RIP Ralph).
Rest in Peace Ralph MacDonald. I was there at this Zildjian Day. I still remember him answering a question about the balance of percussion & drum set. He basically said it's easy when you've got "Gadd on your side!"
anyone who says that this is boring is one of those I NEED A HUGE VIRTUOSO SOLO RIGHT NOW!!!! type. My advice is just ignore it and be thankful that somehow you're musically smart enough to appreciate different kinds of drumming and rhythm
I really think it's the minority that you speak of. There are a few people who will never "Get it" or it will take 5-10 years of maturing to understand (if they truly are musicians)
Gadd has displayed some awe inspiring linear grooves and dynamics. It's awesome.
Who ever sad this is boring or he always does the same things missed the magic. That's why it good. The groove is so in the cut that you can listen to it over and over again. This is music and just happen to just be only drums and percussion. His attention to detail is so sharp. That's one of the things that makes it funky. I don't care if this is all he does it's so right. He knows how to use his chops, with taste. Remember, the best make it look easy.
@pcs56 You're just plain wrong, buddy. There is more groove in 10 seconds of this video than the whole set of Gavin Harrison and Simon Phillips. They may been playing complicated beats but the feel ain't a patch on steve gadd.
@detunedubstep I love Gadd. He is an awesome studio drummer (Paul Simon, Steely Dan, etc playing is legendary). But as a soloist, he always plays the same beats and grooves. I have been listening to him for 30 years and every solo has the same licks: "there's the Late in the Evening salsa groove just like he played with Colaiuta and Weckl back in the 80's...and there's the snare/tom ratamacue lick from the Stuff days...his solos always sound the same. JMO
@detunedubstep you can say such things about drummer like travis barker or joey jordison. But Gavin Harrison plays such difficult grooves. Sometimes he plays so difficult that YOU cant here a groove. For example in a 13/16 you will not here a groove before you mess up with those grooves a long time.
Simon Phillips - Bad groove. I can't even laugh about that. Look at his face and you won't need to hear the groove. You can say its another groove but that there's less groove is definitely wrong.
@Everyone taking BieberBabyBopper seriously, stop. Feeding the obvious troll doesn't help people! And Steve gadd lays down the nicest groove out of any drummer i know.
@SJLifeisgood People are pissed at him because he's trying to convince everyone that any music besides Bieber and Jonas music is corrupt, promotes violence, sex, homoerotic situations, and etc. I don't know if he's a troll, because he's actually corrupt and is taking his beliefs seriously (he has 2 shitty videos on it).
@BieberBabyBopper Justin Bieber is, from what I've seen of his drumming and I have looked for videos to see if he was genuinely really good, average and generic at the drum kit, and it's not an opinion it's a fact to say that mentioning his name on a Gadd drumming video is an incredible disservice to Steve Gadd.
In my opinion we don't have to talk too much about "the incredible groove" or "the great performance".....
Probably this video has been recorded during the 80's, when we have been invaded by tons of drum machines: did you ever had one? I did have more than one, and I remember the time spent playing continously the available patterns one by one....
So this performance is like a joke! Listen again to this clip, close your eyes and start thinking about a man playng his brand new drum machine
A God among mere men. His right foot in the Crazy Army bit is pure gold. The only thing I question is Ralph MacDonald's choice in headwear. Yacht Captian's hat? Seriously? '83 was worse than I remember. The matching tees are cute.

Question after question, he kept asking me things about my job, life in Chicago. The guy has no force of ego. It was a true pleasure and a fun surprise. Nice guy; great impression.

A lesson in musicianship and in the pocket playing! Good groove playing never goes out of style. Gadd is 65 years old now and more in demand than ever before. 40 years at the top!
