  • me dio sueño en la primera parte

  • This bore me to death..

  • is that not snoop dogg on the percussion?

  • sounds similar to the electric wheelchair drumline tune by santa clara vanguard drum & bugle corps. could be the other way around though and they pulled it from him. hmmmm nice beats tho

  • really the best :)

  • i found this vid more than a year ago and am pretty sure i've watched/listened to it every day since. gadd's groove is unmatched by any i've seen, and ralph's minimalistic additions are anything but minimal. fricken great stuff.

  • Dude. Serious funk. Love it love it love it. RIP Ralph.

  • Asides from the amazing skill here, which I've listened to over and over again throughout the years - you have to admire that considering this is supposedly filmed in 1983 when recording technology and techniques were still shabby round the edges and developing, that snare/kit is tuned exceptionally well and recorded crystal clear - especially for live. (P.S RIP Ralph).

  • I didn't know Steve Gadd worked with one of the members of the Village People......

  • Rest in Peace Ralph MacDonald. I was there at this Zildjian Day. I still remember him answering a question about the balance of percussion & drum set. He basically said it's easy when you've got "Gadd on your side!"

  • ...and if it wasn't for how Ralph is stylin' this shit wouldn't groove half as much

  • RIP Ralph MacDonald. I've always been in love with his minimalistic playin' on this clip. Straight dope.

  • God Bless Ralph...

  • RIP Ralph MacDonald. This was at Berklee College of Music - Zildjian Day 1983. Steve Smith, Vinnie, and Peter Erskine also played. I was there...

  • gadd is so badd

  • RIP Ralph MacDonald!

  • Anyone else hear Electric Wheelchair in the beginning?

  • I learned everything I needed to know about percussion from this video

  • oh wait just saw the boston mention...this must have been the zyldjian fest tour then

  • if i'm not mistaken this is at the of Granada Theater (gone now) in Chicago, i was there...WOW!

  • sounds like Vangaurds electric wheelchair cadence in the beginning.

  • I can play crazy army, I might record it and put it up. x

  • Thanks for the vid, really inspiring!

  • anyone who says that this is boring is one of those I NEED A HUGE VIRTUOSO SOLO RIGHT NOW!!!! type. My advice is just ignore it and be thankful that somehow you're musically smart enough to appreciate different kinds of drumming and rhythm

  • Gadd's time was like that of a Naval clock.

Sadly overlooked by most of the drum idiots that blog on YouTube.

  • @Easleytee

I really think it's the minority that you speak of. There are a few people who will never "Get it" or it will take 5-10 years of maturing to understand (if they truly are musicians)

Gadd has displayed some awe inspiring linear grooves and dynamics. It's awesome.

  • Who ever sad this is boring or he always does the same things missed the magic. That's why it good. The groove is so in the cut that you can listen to it over and over again. This is music and just happen to just be only drums and percussion. His attention to detail is so sharp. That's one of the things that makes it funky. I don't care if this is all he does it's so right. He knows how to use his chops, with taste. Remember, the best make it look easy.

  • This......gave me chills

  • I like this :)

  • boringgggg

  • Pretty weak playing by both...if you really wanna see two masters, check out the 2010 videos of Gavin Harrison and Simon Phillips...

  • @pcs56 You're just plain wrong, buddy. There is more groove in 10 seconds of this video than the whole set of Gavin Harrison and Simon Phillips. They may been playing complicated beats but the feel ain't a patch on steve gadd.

  • @detunedubstep I love Gadd. He is an awesome studio drummer (Paul Simon, Steely Dan, etc playing is legendary). But as a soloist, he always plays the same beats and grooves. I have been listening to him for 30 years and every solo has the same licks: "there's the Late in the Evening salsa groove just like he played with Colaiuta and Weckl back in the 80's...and there's the snare/tom ratamacue lick from the Stuff days...his solos always sound the same. JMO

  • @detunedubstep you can say such things about drummer like travis barker or joey jordison. But Gavin Harrison plays such difficult grooves. Sometimes he plays so difficult that YOU cant here a groove. For example in a 13/16 you will not here a groove before you mess up with those grooves a long time.

Simon Phillips - Bad groove. I can't even laugh about that. Look at his face and you won't need to hear the groove. You can say its another groove but that there's less groove is definitely wrong.

  • so friggin smoooooooooth......

  • I want a police hat like the guy playing the woodblock.

  • I bet you, Chuck Norris would like to try this!!!

  • i wanna learn the squeaky hammer!!

  • Steve God breezeeee.... Yeah the percurssionist is felling it

  • HOW DID YOUfind this, this is amazing!!!! OMG!!!!

  • Beast! Hes still a monster even now playing for eric clapton!

  • What is there to dislike? Don't get it...

  • joe jordison/travis barker!

  • Ghost notes once again amazing I need to master those at least as extreme as those ones

  • he kind of looks like george clooney, but groovier, of course.

  • this is the same lick they did with the vinnie caluda/steve gadd/ dave weckle thing. Must be gadds thing.

  • @Everyone taking BieberBabyBopper seriously, stop. Feeding the obvious troll doesn't help people! And Steve gadd lays down the nicest groove out of any drummer i know.

  • @SJLifeisgood People are pissed at him because he's trying to convince everyone that any music besides Bieber and Jonas music is corrupt, promotes violence, sex, homoerotic situations, and etc. I don't know if he's a troll, because he's actually corrupt and is taking his beliefs seriously (he has 2 shitty videos on it).

  • eddie murphy on the percussions

  • Did you just compare Justin Bieber to the greatest drummer of all time? I hope it was a joke, but even still it's disrespectful.

  • @tyyrantt you're so damn right!!!!!!

  • i love that hi hat ....so classic. sounds like he get's bitten by a snake when he does that lick

  • Steve is siiiick!

  • Wow, Steve Gadd is a very good drummer! He is every bit as good as Justin Bieber at playing drums!

  • @BieberBabyBopper wait, what? You're saying that Justin Bieber is a good drummer? If you think that he's a good drummer, you've never heard of Rush.

  • @BieberBabyBopper Justin Bieber is, from what I've seen of his drumming and I have looked for videos to see if he was genuinely really good, average and generic at the drum kit, and it's not an opinion it's a fact to say that mentioning his name on a Gadd drumming video is an incredible disservice to Steve Gadd.

  • @BieberBabyBopper You're a funny little troll aren't you.

  • Never hear Crazy Army with perc. Nice! Thanks for posting!

  • I tried this kind of stuff at a tea dance.... I never got asked back.

  • he looks so high but sounds so awesome

  • unbelievable feel from these guys .... i could do without that sailing hat though Ralph .... : (

  • Beautiful !!!

  • In my opinion we don't have to talk too much about "the incredible groove" or "the great performance".....

Probably this video has been recorded during the 80's, when we have been invaded by tons of drum machines: did you ever had one? I did have more than one, and I remember the time spent playing continously the available patterns one by one....

So this performance is like a joke! Listen again to this clip, close your eyes and start thinking about a man playng his brand new drum machine

  • I think 33 people saw Steve has no double bass drum or double pedal and pressed immediately the dislike button:poor'em!

  • Ladies and gentlemen, I give you grooooooooooove

  • Steve Gadd is most likely the greatest drummer living today.

  • more cow bell!

  • -33 stupid people that doesnt know true drummin!

    -33 stupid travis barker fans..

  • @legnacilyz I like Travis Barker and I like this too

  • Is that snoop dogg! :)

  • @thumpr406 haha no, its eddie murphy

  • 33 people aint got no rhythm

  • Haha! Gadd is so high here...it's hysterical...

  • ........is that a squeaky hammer?

  • A God among mere men. His right foot in the Crazy Army bit is pure gold. The only thing I question is Ralph MacDonald's choice in headwear. Yacht Captian's hat? Seriously? '83 was worse than I remember. The matching tees are cute.

  • A God among mere men. His right foot in the Crazy Army bit is pure gold. The only thing I question is Ralph MacDonald's choice in headwear. Yacht Captian's hat? Seriously? '83 was worse than I remember.

  • yea i agree, he can do whatever he wants

  • i have a fever and the only cure is MORE COWBELL

  • @chewypoopoo1 stfu thats not funny

  • what kickass white shoes! and no one talks about it much, but his kick technique is like god's vagina on a sunny day in june, holy shit.

  • Y M C A...at 1:33

  • !steve gadd is the GOD OF DRUMS! thumbs up if you agree

  • What is the name of this riff at the beginning??? Anyone? ... Or is there a name at all? I've heard him play that on different vids ... sure it awesome!

  • @htool11462 Crazy Army

  • I was oozing groove out of my ears after this video

  • his movements express how he feels the beat hes definitley got soul..

  • I would trade all the chops in the world just to be able to groove live Steve Gadd

  • fantastico. grs druman

  • WOW!!

  • Needs more cowbell

  • @thecravenator42069 Benny Greb is pretty close, if not there already.

  • he´s a kicking ass drummer

  • like biscuits and gravy, that was taste

  • Sum kids really could become loyal supporters of their musicians..or stay haters. :(

  • I need more cowbell!!!

  • 1:12 he's is defenitly farting

  • Steve Gadd is soo tight. What ever happened to the other guy though? Just a sessions guy or apart of something else?

  • @bellsonrich gadd is great! the other guy - ralph macdonald - is well-known too. He is not only a percussionist but also a song writer and he even won a grammy (just the two of us).

  • The percussionist looks like a gay :))

  • My absolute favorite drummer in the world. No one can play a beat with that feel. Never to full, every hit fits into place.

    Steve the best for ever

  • I met Steve in downtown Chicago once. He was standing on a corner pondering the construction of a building. I had to check twice to make sure it was Gadd, one of my true musical heroes. I walked up and introduced myself. I got out enough of how much enjoyment I got out of his music before he started asking about me. Question after question, he kept asking me things about my job, life in Chicago. The guy has no force of ego. It was a true pleasure and a fun surprise. Nice guy; great impression.

  • Kinda funny when you say Steve Gadd out loud in Norway. For norwegians it sounds like "stiv gædd", which means "hardened/stiff sperm" in slang.

I'm gonna go ask someone if they enjoy the work of Steve Gadd.

  • is that snoopy?

  • Steve Gadd's one of my heroes.

  • dude is it the video or are his drumsticks going so fast that they are a blur?

Steve Gadd is teh best :D

  • best drummer ever.

  • Both are terribly stoned.

  • @Bliggaz it sounds and looks like that, I am afraid you are right, sort of slowmotion

  • Very nice!!! Good drums!!! lol!

  • 31 people are rhythmically retarded.

  • 1:07 he looks like he smoked the biggest joint in the world ^^

  • 31 people like joey jordison;D

  • @shengges hahah, i like vermillion and dead memories

  • Wow - thank you to whoever posted this. I was at the Boston event. As a young drummer, that day opened my eyes to what was possible. This was a treat to see

  • As great as this is and it IS GREAT, I can't help but picture Joe Piscopo and Eddie Murphy parodying this back in the day...

  • este tipo si que tiene groove

  • I didn't know snoop dogg played hand drums!

  • the first clip has parts of duke's lullaby iin it right`?

  • @c0d3x001 its crazy army i think.. buddy rich played it

  • Ha he plays it as music

  • zen drumming, with some explosions ! gotta love him

  • This is Awesome!!!!! Steve and Ralph are just straight out gettin' Funky with it !!! I play drums at church and I pray the Lord will give me 1% of the sheer talent Gadd has. Modern drummers could take some lessons from this video. Let a song breathe, let it develop. I look at this and I can't even call myself a drummer!!

  • rare clips, he ALWAYS plays crazy army! Jokes, steve gadd is the best :)

  • Thats the one and .....only Ralph Macdonald on percusion.....

  • Play a groove with out melody....you gotta be good!

  • hehehe 2:21 ist the perfect "do you feel me? ...ok" moment

  • A lesson in musicianship and in the pocket playing! Good groove playing never goes out of style. Gadd is 65 years old now and more in demand than ever before. 40 years at the top!

  • Since I've discovered Steve he has become an inspiration. I love the understated funk of his sound, so it's only natural a giant funk fan such as myself would enjoy his incredible talent. Great technique, great beats.

  • Man Snoop Dogg is really good at percussion!

  • When you have had the career that Gadd has, you can play what ever "licks" you want. I don't care how long he has played them, no one makes them feel as good as he can. He is a true master of the instrument, and someone all drummers can aspire to. So, once you have recorded over 600 albums, feel free to post some of your "licks."

  • @DWdrumBum Amen. Most drummers aren't this interesting to listen. But this guy is captivating.

  • @DWdrumBum Hilarious the nerve of some people. peace

  • @DWdrumBum AMEN!!!

  • @DWdrumBum has he really been on over 600 albums?

  • @Harryhoodz He's the most recorded drummer of all time. (for a reason)

  • @JayMalone That's actually Bernard Purdie

  • @DWdrumBum

Can only posts vids when you've recorded over 600 albums? lol

  • Boring...Steve has been playing the same licks for 30 years now. How about something new once in a while...

  • @SuperWroclaw

I'm assuming that you didn't mean he *had* been playing the same licks, cuz he would have been all of about 8 when he'd started.

Ok, so yeah, it'd be cool though, if we could time warp back to '83 and he'd play something 'new' that we haven't already heard in the last 30 years. But wait... fuck it.... i need a smoke ;)

  • Great stuff! So smooth.

  • Daaaamn! Talk about easy to listen too! A man with so much talent can let it breath! That is greatness!

  • NO GADD=NO FEELING!!

  • Travis

  • Remember this concert...Larry Londin, Louie Bellson all stalling for Gadd who they either couldn't find or couldn't wake up but if i recall we waited about 90 minutes for Gadd to finally show up on stage at Berkley School of Music in Boston. But as usual he played his butt off..for Zildjian Day!! Can't believe I remembered that, haven't seen this video for 25 years!!

    Dr. A
