Last unit I was in the military was 9th Infantry (aka MANCHUs knownas MANCHURIA hahahaha) which 1-503rd got reflagged to. Yes I know whats up. The 1962 original was way better than this version. And it has far more cultural resonance than this remake. Just one year after the release of the original, Pres. Kennedy was assassinated. Afterwards, the film wasn't screened publicly for decades. Also, the original's director -- John Frankenheimer -- was with Robert Kennedy the night RFK was assassinated. I reccommend Greil Marcus's book about the original film also titled "The Manchurian Candidate' (BFI 2002). I couldn't put it down.

And back in the 30s, some business men started to organize a political coup (including a director of Goodyear Tire), and actually approached a General with an offer to have him lead an army to force Roosevelt into giving him a position of power from where he would overtake the White House.

I just find that everyone was up in arms about communism during the Cold War, yet at times there was not as much of a threat as believed (many were wrongly persecuted or blacklisted), and people have long been not nearly aware enough of how strongly rooted corporations are in our society, and how damaging they can be.

More awareness is needed regarding this subject. People see films like this as pure fiction, when there is so much truth here.

The new version of The MC is not a bad film, and it's worth seeing and considering on its own merits. My only point is that, culturally, it didn't cut as deep as the original. Their destructive and sociopathic tendencies have been around since before the Cold War, and I found the recent adaptation of the Manchurian Candidate to be not only of the highest relevance, but also alarmingly realistic.
