good use for containers, careful about using things like mobile phones inside what is essentailly a Faraday Cage though, it makes the bad effects of those worse.
if they are partially buried then also more secure from winds storms.
also useful for compost loo tanks! bury them, take some of the top off and add eg loft ladders & door (safer than a hatch...), means a safer more accesible tank area for the waste storage to be built into. ie way less chance it'd cave in from above etc.
I couldn't live in an apartment full of Ikea products, that's so uncreative and without personality. But then, I wonder if he really lives/lived there or if he was paid to act.
@soco134466 Yes, I've Googled this and read the results 'LUKE'. Shipping containers and cereal boxes aren't much of a comparison given one is several thousand pounds of steel. Seems like a well engineered collapsable version could be used over-and-over without taking too much room on a ship? Who knows? This is an interesting subject, but like many pro-environment initiatives, you have to look at the whole picture and read past biased viewpoints to support the argument either direction.
So what causes a container to be 'out of commission' for it's intended purpose? What's causes such a surplus and are they mechanically damaged or compromised? I can't find the answer to that simple question anywhere...
@ebasss The answer is purely economic. These containers are built in China or the USA where their goods originate from. But most of the time the new place doesn't ship enough back or elsewhere to warrant their reuse. It is usually cheaper to build a new one than to ship an empty one back.
@ebasss Yes you can, same as I already have. Google "shipping container homes", then take the time to look thru the results. You might try to search condition, grade, whatever. Know that there are thousands of these things available. Does Kellogg's want returns on boxes? No. DOES CHINA WANT RETURNS ON CONTAINERS? So now you might realize that Ch. ships out with new ones, shipping them back is cheaper than just re-using or selling them. Mucho surplus of containers! Use the Search, Luke.
@ebasss it is cheaper to simply make more containers, than it is to ship them back to the country or origin & re-use them. Most containers are from China. They dont want to pay the extra fuel to retrieve them via ship, so they keep accumulating in the US west coast. One person suggested make a quick-&-easy wall along the US/Mexico border, using just shipping containers stacked 2 high with a bit of wire on top & armed guards every 2300 feet...I agree, it seems wasteful.
If you are considering modular or prefab home, building with recycled shipping containers is worth taking a look at.
Good resource is the Residential Shipping Container Primer website. A SHOWCASE OF SHIPPING CONTAINER HOMES AND BUILDINGDS, AND A DO IT YOURSELF (DIY) REFERENCE FOR CONVERTING RECYCLED INTERMODAL CARGO SHIPPING CONTAINERS INTO BUILDINGS AND ARCHITECTURE.
Lots of great example buildings, details, facts, and links to other articles...
