when the vid started I thought "hm, doesn't look very promising..." but I was wrong: you nailed it, the right groove, the right attitude, everthing's there! that bass part isn't easy to master as a lot of other attempts on youtube demonstrate. btw I have a RIC 4003 too and use the same strings, but I need to practice some more ;-)
Hi guy, sounds very good. I've the same bass, with T-I JFs, but wanted to ask, what you've got your knobs dialed in at? I remember last year you mentioned tone was cut all the way, on one of them, and how you balanced the two, but I lost where I'd written it down. Would sure appreciate it, if you could clue me in. Thanks, and keep up the great playing.
ohh and next time just use an ipod to listen to the song. then put the video (where you can only hear the bass) and put it on windows moviemaker, then add the song, it sounds perfect
i'll give that a try! thanks! i just got a new camera that records video too and it sounds a lot better (i just put a new vid up that i recorded on it -spirits of ancient egypt-- i just need to work on the volume levels
Hey Justin, I think you mentioned once before you're using T-I flats on this one? Also have you tried dialing up the mutes that are on the bridge itself?
The horseshoe "cover" isn't a "cover at all. I spoke with someone @ RIC about replacing my bridge pickup, and while RI horseshoe pickups weren't available when I ordered mine, they don't sell them separately.
The hi-gain bridge pup has a cover which is indeed removable, however, for a true "horseshoe pickup". it is made of 2 horseshoes facing each other, and creating that famous "gap".
@Justin2129 Because your bass has the hi-gain bridge pickup, like Macca had installed on his in late '75, in preparation for the '76 world tour. My 4003-S also has that hi-gain bridge pickup as well.
if you mean what basses did he use, it was mostly the Rickenbacker throughout the 70's.,Although he used the Fender Jazz bass on most of the songs on "Band on the Run". he also started mixing in the yamaha bass toward the end of the decade
Various Fender Bassman amps, and his Ric 4001-S was his majority setup. He also used his Fender Jazz on just about every track of Band On The Run. Yamaha gave him a custom BB300 in '78 which was used on Wings' last tour & album (Back To The Egg).
For strings, Maxima flats was his preferred string on all his basses (except Wal 5 string). Since Maxima is kaput, his guitar tech has said, Paul was using T-I flats for a while, but switched to Pyramids for his Höfner.
Dude, nice job, and beautiful 4001s by the way. They are a bitch to find, and are super expensive. I found a white one on ebay that was pretty beat up and they want 2800.00 for it. You are a lucky man.
Hi !! I'm lefty too and i hope one day i'll buy the same model ... where did you find ? did you ordered directly at rickenbacker ? how much did you paid for the bass ?

Love this. It make me wonder though, how on earth can McCartney play this bassline AND sing the vocal at the same time?! That does take genius!!

@WilburyVision No to play and sing takes practice to create this stuff takes genius !

Yes I have one. I also have a left handed Rickenbacker 350/12v63 in Jet-glo.
They have not been made in over 10 years, and only a handful were lefties. Super Rare. The build date on mine is March 2000

i must ask, what amp are you using? try taping a tissue to your mic.
Floridaboy7777 2 years ago
i use a crate amp....and i recorded this with a $20 disposable video camera, which is why it sounds so bad lol
Justin2129 2 years ago
oh well yeah in that case you need to get a flip video camera lol. good job tho, are you a lefty? or did you flip the video?
Floridaboy7777 2 years ago
yeah im lefty! :) if you look at the very end of the video you can see a close up of the headstock where it says "Rickenbacker"
Justin2129 2 years ago

Well Macca always played bass from a non-traditional perspective, and as iconic as this bass line is he never played it the exact same way again.
Give this guy some love, because it isn't silly...

Hey Justin, I think you mentioned once before you're using T-I flats on this one? Also have you tried dialing up the mutes that are on the bridge itself?
636117 2 years ago
no because the mutes were missing when i bought it lol... i usually use my hand for muting anyway because it gives me more control
Justin2129 2 years ago
Thank god someone else removes those pesky horseshoe covers besides myself
congerz83 2 years ago
HAHA! well there must be 3 of us cause it was gone when i bought it. i'd have taken it off anyway though

BenyBass 2 years ago
how did he get that thumping sound on his bass?
BandOnTheRun87 2 years ago
tone knobs, EQ during mixing, flatwound strings, and palm muting
Justin2129 2 years ago
might be on his amp. not the bass.
Imbboychoji 2 years ago
prob a combo of both

what is mccartney's bass setup in the 70's?
BandOnTheRun87 2 years ago

what does he use in the studio now besides the hofner?
BandOnTheRun87 2 years ago
umm i think the hofner's pretty much it. he used the ric on one song on "driving rain" but i think it's all hofner now.
Justin2129 2 years ago

Hi there ... what are the level of volume / tone for each pick up you are using in this video ... ?!?
cjorata 2 years ago
neck pickip- volume and tone all the way on
bridge pickup- tone all the way off and volume was on about 3/4 of the way on
what i mean when i say tone all the way off is that it sounds more muddy.
keep in mind that because it is left handed, what i just told you could be completely backwards from what a right handed bass would be.
Also, the EQ on my amp had a lot to do with the tone
Justin2129 2 years ago
oh you have mccartney's version with smiley truss rod cover ;)
