Its wonderful how in the stargate universe the known world becomes so enormous that for example the idea of us humans on Terra being divided into nations and ethnic groups becomes utterly ridiculous and primitive.
Except the Wraith never developed shields since they were an extravagant waste in the face of Ancient Drone technology. It is possible that they discount the effectiveness of shields in their tactical and strategic thinking given that the energy drain caused by shields would cause them to sacrifice firepower and mobility. Even with a ZPM, generating a shield over a ship as large as a Hive would draw a lot of power.
As a civilization, we are at very early stages of development. Think about it: we use old dead plants (e.g. oil, gas, coal) as our main source of energy. How lame is that?

@Anciets splitting atoms isn't really that big of a deal... nuclear fission is naturally occuring fenomenon in nature, the only thing we do is refine the naturally accuring uranium and concentrate so it produces significant amounts of energy... the use of natural resources is actually pretty stupid because de deposit of large amount of carbon in the ground is a part of the natural chemical life sycle of our planet, and its just pretty stupid to keep using a extremely finite energy source.

@Anciets While that is half true, we still haven't hit half efficiency out of crude resources, the worlds most efficienct car is half efficienct, but it is still crude, Primal even, while some parts of us are a hundred years ahead of us, some parts, are still falling behind. however @darthirakli it isn't lame, crude resource is the most efficient out there, however if it is lame to you, why not get a PHD and get to work on a new one instead of acting not half but a fraction of smart?
Chill out. Darthirakli was implying that, while fossil fuels were an effective and accessible fuel for development, they are not the most efficient way to tap into the energy supplies around us. The energy in fossils is ultimately solar energy; going directly to the source or its inexhaustible derivatives (e.g. wind, living biomass) is the next logical step. No space-faring civilization could be powered by fossil fuels for long.

@stormtroopera52 wow, i facepalmed pretty hard there. whats is hydrogen? its an atom. therefore "power of the atom" includes hydrogen and uranium/plutonium and just about any other atom we can harness for power. fusion has already happened, its just not actually generating any surplus power. it takes in more power than it gives so im with you that fusion, while interesting, is a dead end. Ion Drives were invented in the 70's and they have been used in satellites but not powerful enough yet.

@airsoftmanic Oh, and technically, when it comes to space weapons, we don't have any railguns. the only railgun that exist is designed to bombard land from sea, its speed and range is highly limited due to the fact a real railgun Charge aka Projectile would go so fast in our atmosphere that it would hit literally turn into plasma, which then makes it useless in warfare. A real railgun does not exist as it requires all the nuclear power in the world and then some to fully operate.
@stormtroopera52 quick search on youtube shows the navy already has a railgun. and in space there is almost zero friction so is usable. and i imagine a combat space vessel would be pretty big so could have a few of them. we also have missles, and they seem to be pretty good at blowing stuff up. surface bombardment as you pointed out would be pretty hard to do due to atmospheric friction but we manage to get the shuttle back almost every time so its not impossible.

@TheAlterans i'd argue this as the only way that we managed to defeat any of them was through the use of ancient or asgard technology for example
Ori = Ancient Ark of Truth
Replicator's = Ancient Stargate and the dakara weapon
Goa'uld = Rebel Jaffa mainly
Wraith = We have never been close to destroying them but all the fights that have been won use Ancient or Asgard technology
so therefore we didn't really defeat any of the major powers without huge amounts of help

Except the Wraith never developed shields since they were an extravagant waste in the face of Ancient Drone technology. It is possible that they discount the effectiveness of shields in their tactical and strategic thinking given that the energy drain caused by shields would cause them to sacrifice firepower and mobility. Even with a ZPM, generating a shield over a ship as large as a Hive would draw a lot of power.

While I agree with you about not being alone I don't think we are going to be openly visited any time soon. We can barely get along with one another so I highly doubt we would be able to get along with an extraterrestrial species. Not to mention that most of our entertainment concerning "aliens" involve us killing them. Not very conductive to a first contact situation.

The technological skill to use such things to produce energy is probably beyond your own comprehension. Even if this doesn't get through your incredibly thick skull...why dont you think about the fact that we know how to split the atom. Hmmm...that seems like quite a feat to me. @Anciets splitting atoms isn't really that big of a deal... nuclear fission is naturally occuring fenomenon in nature, the only thing we do is refine the naturally accuring uranium and concentrate so it produces significant amounts of energy... the use of natural resources is actually pretty stupid because de deposit of large amount of carbon in the ground is a part of the natural chemical life sycle of our planet, and its just pretty stupid to keep using a extremely finite energy source.

@Anciets While that is half true, we still haven't hit half efficiency out of crude resources, the worlds most efficienct car is half efficienct, but it is still crude, Primal even, while some parts of us are a hundred years ahead of us, some parts, are still falling behind. however @darthirakli it isn't lame, crude resource is the most efficient out there, however if it is lame to you, why not get a PHD and get to work on a new one instead of acting not half but a fraction of smart?

Chill out. Darthirakli was implying that, while fossil fuels were an effective and accessible fuel for development, they are not the most efficient way to tap into the energy supplies around us. The energy in fossils is ultimately solar energy; going directly to the source or its inexhaustible derivatives (e.g. wind, living biomass) is the next logical step. No space-faring civilization could be powered by fossil fuels for long.

@darthirakli we also use the power of atoms (nuclear fission and fusion is in the works) and have already made weapons to wage war in space, with rail and coil guns (predictably). we even have a viable deep space propulsion drive at really early stages (ion drives, look 'em up) so dont give up on the terran race just yet ;)

@jaspertheking4life Incorrect, Ion drives was correct, invented in the mid 70's but not allowed to use for anything space related due to the peace treaty with russia, which of whom pressed the matter of not using them due to the possibility of them being used with weapons in space, ion drives are also highly energy efficient, and need little to no energy to operate.
Plasma on the other hand, from what research dictates, requires Vast amounts of power, all the Nuclear we have now isn't enough

@jaspertheking4life I believe after 3 years of Researching better propulsion techniques, and actually installing and using ion drives in prototype aircraft, I would know a little bit about this stuff, Plasma Drives are nothing more than a theory of Science Fiction Ideas, the UN doesn't control what the U.S. invents or uses, the treaty with Russia however did in this matter, you can look it up, ask any one with a PHD on the subject, your high school history teacher will even tell you

@stormtroopera52 no warp is Science fiction, plasma drives are tested in 2011, as I said, Ion is used to short cirtuit any electrical thing in the ship, Plasma however, is heated up to around a bilion degrees celcius and is then blasted out, so this is my point:
1 is Ion will never be used as a drive system because it's Scienitificly imposible.
2.Plasma drives will be the next step after the regular liquid oxirgen drives we have now.
and 3. the U.N holds both Russia and the U.S.

@airsoftmanic the Power of the atom, the term "So last year" is in order, we have the power of Hydrogen now, hydrogen, is many times stronger than an atom split, which is why you have h2o cars instead of nuclear cars ect ect. Fusion, in the works but still dead ending at every turn it takes. we haven't even managed to get anything to half fusion stability, let alone anything near full fusion. Ion Drives, definitely not in the Early stages, as they were invented in the 70's

@stormtroopera52 wow, i facepalmed pretty hard there. whats is hydrogen? its an atom. therefore "power of the atom" includes hydrogen and uranium/plutonium and just about any other atom we can harness for power. fusion has already happened, its just not actually generating any surplus power. it takes in more power than it gives so im with you that fusion, while interesting, is a dead end. Ion Drives were invented in the 70's and they have been used in satellites but not powerful enough yet.

However, you seem to indicate that Hydrogen Fuel Cells, which is was I presume is what you are referring to when you say "Hydrogen," produces vast amounts of energy. It is true Hydrogen fuel cells produce more energy than Internal Combustion engines, roughly twice the amount of energy. The amount of energy produces per reaction is roughly on the scale of 15-20eV...

Take note that 200MeV is equal to 200,000,000eV. Remember that Hydrogen fuel cells produce roughly 20eV per reaction. Strange that you believe Hydrogen fuel cells are more "powerful" as you put it. We don't have nuclear cars because the it wouldn't be feasible to put nuclear reactors in every car. Well done

@airsoftmanic Oh, and technically, when it comes to space weapons, we don't have any railguns. the only railgun that exist is designed to bombard land from sea, its speed and range is highly limited due to the fact a real railgun Charge aka Projectile would go so fast in our atmosphere that it would hit literally turn into plasma, which then makes it useless in warfare. A real railgun does not exist as it requires all the nuclear power in the world and then some to fully operate.

@stormtroopera52 quick search on youtube shows the navy already has a railgun. and in space there is almost zero friction so is usable. and i imagine a combat space vessel would be pretty big so could have a few of them. we also have missles, and they seem to be pretty good at blowing stuff up. surface bombardment as you pointed out would be pretty hard to do due to atmospheric friction but we manage to get the shuttle back almost every time so its not impossible.

@selearemus I actually prefer Terrans, because it is more literal, if we do meet another species they would probabaly refer to us as Things/People from Earth initially, not our species name which we have classed ourselves. Plus Terran sounds cooler- we would still keep our Homo Sapiens Sapiens name for ourselves.

asgard beam weapons are capable of hitting right through "aurora" class ships but the city ship is capable of owning everything cept that asuran satalite weapon in season 3's last episode

nah the shield owns that too in a way cause that weapon cant penatrate the city ship shield..... the only problem is that as long as the enemy has power the weapon will never stop.... the only way would be to leave the planet, or destroy the weapon at its's source... the replicator homeworld....... without the beam or even if the stargate was disconnected for a while atlantis could use drones on the defenceless satalite and destroy it...

as much as i would want the asurans to win (cause they got cool Atlantean Technology and all that) the bug replicators and human form milkyway replicators would win cause they can really adapt and all that... and they really replicate where the asurains dont really... they build and everything just like the ancients did so the milkyway replicators would pwn their asses via replication... hell.. they could send in an army of bugs via stargate and turn the city into theirs.. if ya know what i mean
