I just want to say another big thank you for all the tip and clips you have showing how you use the mat, and for the idea of using it to teach the side moves. That little rectangle is so useful! I had no idea. My puppy loves it, so I can have her with me as I'm teaching Maui, and Koani's practicing her stay or wait, and we switch, etc. You've shown so well how to teach it, and then applying it. Muchismas Gracias!
Oh, that makes total sense! Thank you sooooooooooo much! You don't know how much I appreciate you!!!!!!
P.S. I was born in Montana even tho' I moved to Arizona when I was 8. Loved the video of you in a dress in the field and also the one with the puddles everywhere! You are so awesome!!!
I understand what I do, but she doesn't budge. I've tried a dowel, a scarf/ string to gently show her the direction to move. I'm wondering about bump her and click, but I keep hearing in my head, "shape and not force". The trainer we had tried to force her to go "down" one time in trying to get her to roll over, and Maui didn't budge either. I never have used force, just waited, clicked, etc. and she goes down for me, no problem. I stopped the classes when she wanted me to pop the leash.
@azmauigirl if she knows targeting, like 'touch' the square, the mat, what ever... have her on your right and the target on her right, back cross with your left leg and give her the 'cue' to 'touch' or what ever your word is. eventually just move the target inches away and then feet away and then yards away. But this time the criteria is 'touch to the side' not in front of you, and then click for the first touch on the side target...
Loved this! I understand the step by step concept, but my question is how do you get the dog to move away from you? Maui will heel or side up in my direction, but when I want her to move away, she won't budge, so to speak. Not sure if it's a herding thing, she's an aussie. Any suggestions appreciated.
@azmauigirl If my dog is on my right and I want to 'pass to my right' and push my dog away, I 'grape vine' to the right with my left leg behind my right leg...
Thanks, Nancy. I have tried to access that link, but it keeps saying that it is not in existence. It wasn't an active link so I copied and pasted, but to no avail. Can you tell me the title and I can search that way? Thanks so much.
Yes, if my dog is on the right side of me and I step away I call this 'side up' , if I side step towards my dog on the right I call this 'pass' check out the freestyle video with Story , he has a HUGE 'pass' I teach it the same way, one step at a time
Love this one, too! That rule of 7 is a great one to remember. I also like how you move the dog to the side, as I've been trying to figure out how to do this with my older dog, for freestyle. The other techniques that I've seen just don't work with her, (translation: I'm not good at them!). Do you have any tips for moving in the other direction, as in she is now taking the "lead" in moving to the right as you step right?
@azmauigirl Oh, it is because I put a 'space' between the youtube. and com, just take that space out, or search Nancy Tanner & Story, it is the routine with me in a dress...
I Love this Video and also I checked out your Channel. Very interesting! If you need any help getting this Video and your Channel exposed to where it is on top in all the searches. I found this site called tubeviews.(net) that has took my breath away. I'm working on my 4th Channel now, this one I just made. My Videos are getting so many hits now. Check it out and keep in touch.
After watching many of the videos you have of Safira, I would imagine she could do anything! Send us a video of you and Safira starting the postion of heel and/or side and proofing the postion...

Great video. I'm trying hard to get my sheltie to heel properly. Tink I will have to retrain her with your method. Thanks.

5*! That is a great way to teach side stepping too:). I like the part when the other dog comes in to help clean up the crumbs:).
Happy Clicking!
