@robbobjonification yeah, but the cutesy characters actually make thee story much darker, because they are faced with some very real consequences.

for instance, the party is actually killed by the final boss, only to come back to life after killing the other guy at the end, y'know, that er....thing at the end.

This is the running battle theme to my current D&D campaign...EPICNESS ensues. FF IX kicked ass, hands down. VII was fun, and its extended storyline franchise is cool and all, but Sephiroth really is just an emo momma's boy whose only power comes from manipulating genetically similar puppets using energy (and not even all of it) from inside the planet. I'm hoping Square finishes the franchise for Compilations though, because FF VII has one more story to tell.,..

If there's a remake of FF9, I choose this music to be its opening. In a peaceful Alexandria and all of the sudden, chaos breaks loose. Zidane, hanging around in a nearby inn, suddenly springs into action.

Meanwhile, Queen Garnet is alerted that she sends Beatrix and Steiner before descending from her throne and joins Zidane. Vivi, talking to a moogle, turns and rushes for aid.

All lined up to face the new chaos, determined... screen blacks out, with the title FINAL FANTASY IX-2

this game has one of the darkest storylines i have ever witnessed.

in a very good way that is....lol.

it asks the question of the afterlife by portaying a downright adorable, but dying world with all due seriousness and offsets it with muppet like characters.

in keeping with a fantasy while turning the fantasy on its head by having eidolons destroy cities and asking the question of self awareness (vivi) and the entitlement therein.

this game is kinda dark.

@jakedge3 Tottally agree. If you look at some of our darker Movies, Games and Cartoons the ones that were most popular are the ones that have a artistic style that contrasts with the storyline. I mean I actually prefer that style where you watch something on the assumption that it's light hearted and start to like the characters then watch them go through some insanely difficult life trials. Just makes the story better overall. In layman's terms don't judge a book by it's cover :D

@jakedge3 I think nobuo uematsu meant it to be dark in order to accentuate the hopeful qualities in each character tied into the storyline of which each character was broken(not complete, idk lacking something especially as the story progressed) even to begin with, but throughout the story are pieced together melodiously.
