Australia has one party, the big business party. It has two factions, the ALP and the Coalition. End the two faction single party corporate dictatorship. Vote Socialist Alliance no.1
I miss this bloke more than my dog of 16 years. This country has not shown the true respect that Keating deserves. His vision and brillance miles ahead of the rest.
@williamdixon4 i agree. Its a pitty he gave this speech on his way out rather than at the begining of his time. People recon ruds appology was great, I recon Keatings was better...
John you might be begging for handouts too when Perth's economic heyday is over and the mines bottom out. It's never nice to elevate yourself above anyone - particularly the historic owners of the land. You imagine that you might do something different than aboriginals but who knows what any of us would do if poverty was imposed upon us.
Almost right. In terms of mandate Johnnie Boy was not elected by the majority of Australians in 2 elections I can think of. But we have a 2PP system and preferences get him across the line.
Otherwise Beazley would be in Government if it worked the way you're suggesting.
John, that is a huge generalisation. There are a lot of aboriginal people doing there best in their own circumstances, dont judge so easily because you obviously do not have aboriginal friends.
Interesting point, John but I think the problem was that they hadnt got the push to start working and were stuck with ATSIC, an incompetent beurocracy that simply had no idea of how to spend the millions they got.
Noel Pearson puts it best: "This $20 I got from the government just doesnt have the same value as the $20 I worked for".
yes what i meant was that the real shame was that there are many abuse cases in these regions where social workers hadnt intervened. I didnt condone the stolen generation, although I can understand how you would have interpretted it that way. ;-)
This speech made to a delagation of rich whites sent a dangerous message to aboriginal children that we, Australia will not intervene when you need defending.
The problem has been ever present. Social workers who didn't take away children who were abused, out of the fear of being branded as racists by the media for "stealing" them.
The main problem isnt that the children were once "stolen" but that they were no longer being "stolen" anymore. This is what we should be sorry about.
Wrong. The problem is that they were stolen sunshine. They had a very good network going before we took over. What is going on now, is a typical result of a poverished community. Poverty has a history, its man made, its social and it is extremelly political. Prior to the issues facing people now, we had no right to step our foot in, take people away from their families. Thats disgusting.
My comment was a reply to dvorak18 by the way, not paul in the speech; the speech was great, type in "redfern speech" in google, and ull get a copy of the speech, it was so good to see someone like him, speak like that.
he may have but I sure as hell didn't
