how about we let the free market determine what people want and not some bureaucratic feeding off tax payer dollars deciding what he thinks people should get. if the newspaper industry goes under than so be it, people obviously dont want newspapers. let those resources and capital be reallocated to productive parts of the economy.
Who in their right mind thinks that news organizations will be able to provide fair coverage when politicians are holding the purse strings to those organizations who are charged to "hold them [the politicians] accountable"? Politicians are nothing other than self-interested and manipulative. This concept of government bailouts to the press is extremely dangerous, and a truly "free" press, free from government interference, was known to be crucial even to our Founders 200+ years ago.
Thanks ReasonTV for this and the other useful information you provide regularly (on the Internet).
Printed newspapers are about as useful toward helping citizens be responsible, informed pursuers of freedom of the human spirit as billboards are useful in helping motorists be safe drivers on roadways.
The death of newspapers is a good thing, we don't need more progressive, liberal leaning and inept reporting. This is the whole reason we have an idiot for president - the media adored him.
True journalism has been dead for a long time. If Edward R. Murrow were alive today, he'd be the first one calling for an end to the travesty of what is being called "journalism" or "news" but is, in fact, a megaphone for the corporate entities that bought up almost every news organization to neuter any independent reporting that doesn't suite their agenda and political alliances. R.I.P. Newsprint.. you died long ago and we've waited too long to have the funeral.
As usual.the policos are the very last to read the hand writing on the wall--hand writing which needs a government subsidy of course. HA!! Actually newspapers are a lot like government because without forced taxpayer's subsidies neither newspapers nor the government are likely to get a dime from us. Whenever I'm perplexed as to why this country elected George W.Bush I'm reminded who the alternatives were. Senator Kerry,if the Boston Globe can't save itself it does'nt deserve to be saved.
Okay I get my news online, why do we need a print media? In the liberal leftist "save the tinsy fly, allow human trafficking" theology why is it bad to save some trees?
that said. i have two newspaper subscriptions. The Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal. Both good papers. One gives a better reporting on Europe the other on America, but they both have good foreign reporting. i suggest you subscribe to them if you want a good newspaper to read.
I used to be subscribed to 5 major news paper publications years ago. Ever since the internet, whenever i read a dubious story in the paper I would check the facts online and sure enough 9/10 they would fudge events or quotes to fit a certain tone. Result was to cancel all subscriptions. They tried to sell sensationalist lies and I didn't buy. I shouldn't be forced to pay for their incompetence.
I am curious to the fact that newspapers would give their news to the public free online. Why do they not do what many magazines currently do, make people pay to read online articles as well? Remember, it is a business; they have to make money somewhere.
"Beyond the question of how much these bailouts will cost tax payers, it is difficult to imagine reporters subsidized by the government maintaining journalistic independence." @ 4:18
That is the most important statement in the whole video.
1) you never mention any role of media bias in its demise. The NYT, ABC news, Newsweek etc. suffer from lack of credibility not just because internet news is free ad fast, but because they're the propaganda wing of the Democrat party. Look at Air America vs Rush Limbaugh: liberal media isn't viable.
2) The closing statement is a clinker. Giving people free subscriptions won't force them to read papers.
I find the idea of bailouts for the journalism industry unintelligent. Just because newspapers are dying out doesn't mean that journalism as a whole will die. The market for news and media will always be alive and there will always be someone to take an outlet's place if they fall.
Now that we are moving into a modern era where we can get information faster through the internet, it will force journalism outlets to adapt. If these companies can't adapt to the changing market, let them fail.
we didn't bail out the buggy whip industry and look at what happened. we still have yet to recover. We let the ice delivery men go under and now we have no ice. we let milkmen disappear and i haven't had milk in 25 years. don't even get me started on our inability to act for the silent film industry. we are socially responsible for saving every industry or job EVER created, whether or not they are supassed by better technology or means of doing them.
"Hold the government accountable"??? They have the journalistic integrity of Parvda and Baghdad Bob. Actually, they deserve to get paid for being so loyal to Chairman Obama. This might improve news reporting, since what screws over our news is the fact that by reporting the truth, the news companies could lose ad revenue, hence the wrong-doings of corporations keep getting swept under the rug.
BBC has been government subsidized for years. Just look at how much better it is than CNN.
When John Stossel did consumer reporting he proved that this is not true. He went after the same companies that bought advertising for his network. Guess what? The continued to buy advertising. It is all about how many people you can reach as an advertiser and creating customers for the news agencies. Conspiracy theories have no place on a Reason TV. post.

People demand truth in their news and aren't interested in reading globalist ass rags that pass as newspapers. They also won't watch propagandists on corporate media. Nobody is interested in paying for lies, that's why the federal government will have to subsidize them.
By that logic the government should be subsidizing the telegraph. Telegraph wires are a public good, without them, how would we get our information quickly from far away places?
The Liberal Fascists did it to themselves. They've created a web of propaganda to denounce the Bush administration the support Obama for even worse policies. The Obamunists outright lied about Bill Ayers and lied about Obama's history. They continue their sycophancy daily, attacking anyone who disagrees with his policies as racists. They did it to themselves. They deserve to be selling hats and pencils in the streets.
Liberals want the newspaper bailout for the same reason they support the Fascist Doctrine: because they want to preserve the leftist stranglehold of the media.
So a few leftys say they support the proposed bailout...big deal. This is almost irrelevant except for the misguided belief that newspapers support democracy etc...those that would benefit most will be the powerful politicians and their supporters, many, like Rupert Murdoch, who can't be called left wing, are to gain from any bailout. So tax payers money goes to supporting some of the richest pro big government statist so-called conservatives or progressive media owners in the world. What a con.
apparently these people dont get it. IF YOU GIVE OUT FALSE INFORMATION YOU WILL NOT BE HELD HIGHLY AS SOMETHING NEEDED FOR THE PEOPLE. STOP WASTING MONEY AND LET YOURSELVES DIE LIKE YOU DESERVE!!!!
I don't want my tax dollars funding news papers for a lot of reasons. 1) Papers lie (mostley by omission) 2. They deserve to go out of business if the readers don't trust them. 3) Just like most things, when the government gives it money, it does not help. Especially in private business. All it does is prolong failure.
Where was the bailout for all those companies which produced video cassettes?
ANY bailout is automatically a BAD thing. People seem to forget that the government is just made up of people. Very greedy, power-hungry, LAZY people who don't give a flying fuck about liberty OR the Constitution.
With the internet, printed newspapers will likely be a thing of the past soon. It's a good thing we haven't been bailing out the old clay tablet industry to keep it alive. I hear TV news channels talking about this as a horrible thing for everybody because THEY get their news from newspapers. Seriously, if you're a company that provides news and all you're doing is reporting stuff we could read on our own, then either get out there and do your own reporting on stuff, or find a new job.
We can have newspapers use them again. They'll love it. The're 100% recyclable.
You're right though. Print jornalism is largely dead with internet journalism taking it's place. People are already finding their trusted sources online.
Even local TV news is heading this way. Few people want to tune in at 10:00pm to hear news about things you read on the internet hours ago.
Besides, with the hack journalists that run and are employed by these mainstream papers, why do I even wanna save them? They asked hardly any questions in the runup to the Iraq War and let an uninformed Congress and populace send us to war. They have yet to hold Obama accountable on big issues, instead singing his praises at every turn. What's the point of these papers? They're just wasting space! Let better online media take over the market.
I'm tired of the soviet-like central planning, determining who fails and who cannot fail. Since when are politicians qualified to decide this? Is it MORAL for them to favor some over others in a "free market"? Never and no.
These idiot liberals seem to forget that we CAN hold people accountable without necessarily having to buy and hold onto our news sources. Internet media is every bit as good.
Allow newspapers to operate as nonprofits? That's the dumbest thing I ever heard!
I'm getting tired of these goddamn bailouts! STOP IT, you fucktard polticians! Have you no spine?! Let the uncompetitive companies FAIL! I don't give a shit if fucking papers fail. We can always get our news online. Our "democracy" (we're not a democracy but a republic; i'm tired of this fallacy) is not in danger if we lose papers. They'll just adapt and go online or FAIL!
It doesn't matter what industry it is: failure is always an alternative to silly gov't bailouts.
Why can't the newspapers just change their business models to adapt to the information age? This video itself is the perfect example of how a print media publication founded before the rise of the internet can adapt to new technology in order to maintain its readership/viewership. Any business, newspaper or otherwise, unwilling to adapt to new technology deserves to go out of existence.
We can't force people to read them, Michael? What is that, a challenge? I see on the horizon vast piles of propagandizing print media piling up in all of the many new government buildings, mandatory "newspaper classes" in America's schools and universities, and tax credits and subsidies for print media subscriptions (to "stimulate" the industry.)
Certainly sold to the idea.
