  • Thank you for this video. I do not own a gun and don't care to at present, but that doesn't mean that I have to be ignorant of how to keep myself and those around me safe from my own ignorance of firearms.

  • the Number 1# rule of Firearm safty is. You can never ever be to careful weather you know for sure or not that the fiream is on safty er unloaded with or with out ammo. ... Basicly the same difference he just explaind...treat them like they are lazer beams that can cut off human limbs :D

  • Great job putting out the most essential kind of gun video that needs to be seen by everyone. I enjoy watching you shoot. Thanks for all the vids!

  • @SpartacusColo

    well said :)

some of the videos on here are plain scary. recently i actually saw a women who was just given a shot gun and had no idea how to operate it muzzle her husband/boyfriend like 3 times!

i'm thinking to myself its a freaking 12 gauge and at the distances she was at it may as well have been a death ray. just crazy stuff its sad that some people give their friends and loved ones loaded weapons before explaining how to properly handle them.

  • thanks for the video it helped and shows you care keep the comming

  • the best. thanks

  • thumbs up if u also have been shooting fo years but still watched this cause its Hickok

  • thank you for make this now i now more i am scout

  • thanks for this! i really want to get into this hobby but know nothing about the safety

  • Thank you

  • I ALWAYS treat EVERY gun as if it is ready to fire. Even if I KNOW for sure it is NOT loaded, I still will NEVER point it at anything except down range. If everybody followed the 4 rules mentioned here, there would be a lot less accidental shootings.

  • Great video, Hickok. I'm 17 years old and weather I'm shooting a .22 LR, or a Daisy Red Ryder, I have those 4 rules memorized in my mind at all times. It's second nature to me. Speaking of that Red Ryder, I even throw the lever down and activate the safety before I pass it to say my dad or brother.

  • dislikes? uh why?

  • @snkmsta some people have nothing better to do.

  • @snkmsta They missed the like. only a moron would purposely dislike a gun safety video.

  • Thank you so much for this video. My uncle has a saying "if you're gunna be dumb, you gotta be tough." which I particularly like when considering guns. Y'know we like to go out and play with them but as you said we need to constantly think of guns as what they are. That is a weapon that if used improperly may challenge just how "tough" we think we are. Again thank you for this video. :D

  • I remember when i started shooting in january 3rd 2011 people asked why i had a habit of checking out my chamber and keeping my finger away from the trigger i said "i saw it on a video it made sence i adapted to it" but re-watching this video i should have said "why don't you"

  • well spoken

  • Thank you very much for this video. it was very helpful. I think every one needs to treat guns with a tone of respect.

  • I've a a question: In which state do you live?

  • love your videos Hickok45

  • The 4 vital ACTS. Assume its loaded, Controll muzzle, Take your finger the fuck away from the trigger, See that the firearm is unloaded PROVE it safe, Point in safe direction, Remove ammo, observe the chamber, Verify the feeding path and Examine the bore.

  • @DeviousBetrayer r u a tired school pupil..lol

  • I like how even when holding the air soft gun you keep your finger off the trigger; a truly responsible shooter.

  • thank you so much mate I'm13 and i'm going to a gun range for the first time soon and you have taught me so much I didn't know but i thought i did.thanks you so much ! :)

  • The light saber method is a great idea.

  • Does any one want my domain name GunsAndSafety......com and GunsAndWeapons......com ? they wuld make great websites,

  • @HydrogenLLC kind of a rip off of guns and ammo dot com

  • Terrific video. I'm trying to get an inexperienced friend into safe firearm habits, and I'm definitely going to use the "light saber" technique from now on.

  • true funny story the first round I ever shot was a klick where I expectet a bang that impressed me the cartridge was dud and untill now I dont trust bullits at all.

  • Perfect opening!

  • A buddy of mine got killed in Iraq by a stupid mistake of mine. I had my finger off the trigger after our regiment was drawn into a skirmish. I thought nothing would go wrong. I had my finger off the trigger right? So as I turned around to face him my gun went off while the barrel was in front of him because the chamber was so hot the primer ignited. I will never forgive myself.

  • Thanks a lot for sharing all your knowledge about guns with us, this video is a really important one and it´s really well explained.

The laser example is pretty useful I must say.

  • Great video. I'm just getting started with shooting (only a bb gun for now!) but I want to start with good safety habits even though it's "just" a bb gun. I agree absolutely about "going overboard" with safety. In the absence of 100% certainty of a safe condition, simply assume the worst possible condition. Stamp out ALL uncertainty as to safety, and replace it with certainty. These habits are so simple, and can help us all enjoy our guns safely.

    Awesome!

  • Mr. Hickok would make one of the top best gun instructors in the nation hands down. Anyone who can't follow and easily learn his simple straight to the point instructions simply should not buy, own or even posses a firearm of any kind. I've had my Glcok 23 for a little over a month now and everything self taught and go over board with. Now I'm training myself in better target groups and tactical situations training. Gotta love youtube and Mr. Hickok!

  • I like shooting, but the truth is that the safest thing is not to have a gun.

  • not quite true. what if a bear broke through the door? what if a psycho came into the house? then, a gun would be safer than being unarmed.

  • @busyhands94 The chances of that happening are small, and even so, it's not clear that having a gun would benefit you. You'd have to be able to get to it and use it properly.

  • even though it may never happen, i am still a former boyscout and i always live by the saying "be prepared". I keep mine in a pistol safe, with the cylinder removed and on half cock but the cylinder is loaded. i can just roll the cylinder into the gun, insert the cylinder pin, ready to defend my family's life if (God forbid) i ever have to. i have practiced (with the firearm unloaded for safety reasons) and i can do it very quickly even in the dark, similar to a modern pistol with a magazine.

  • @AmokBR Proper training and weapon handling mitigate 100% of accidental shootings. Meanwhile, even if you live only blocks from a police station, response times will still run you 2-5 minutes. That's a long time to be defenseless should someone bent on harming you or your family enter your home. Plus with a host of quick access gun safes similar to the GunVault products, it's easy to keep a weapon stored safely while maintaining quick accessibility.

  • @paulydanyl Training doesn't "mitigate 100% of accidental shooting".

  • @AmokBR Perhaps you should read the whole thing. Training AND proper weapon handling mitigate 100% of accidental discharge. Find any case of accidental discharge you like, and there will be at least one weapon safety rule they violated.

  • @paulydanyl Sure, but no amount of training will prevent every violation of weapon safety rules. Human error can't be eliminated. A single accident with a gun can be fatal. When you own a gun you take a risk that can only be justified by your love of shooting.

  • nice video id just like to say treat airsoft guns like real guns espically the high end guns i play airsoft at private local fields i had a friend who was playing with this m9 at his house with his cousins i was telling treat it like a real gun when i left his house he called 30 minuts later his little brother was hurt because he looked down the barrel of the airsoft gun and pulled the trigger thinking it was un loaded thats why i say treat any type of gun like a real gun

  • I like guns but i don't know were to shoot and i live on a military base

  • Thanks hickok that was very useful for me, really a appreciate it sir.

  • hickok,

great video with great tips. More people need to see this video because it can save lives. I embedded your video on my website at ccwbystate (dot) com. Keep up the good work!

  • i'm 15 and my dad taught me the safety of guns and i wouldent even joke with a loaded firearm or on anloaded firearm i have a gun in my room but i took the ammuniton and put it in a locked box and gave the key to my mom and i put the ammuntion onn top of the fridge i'm a very responsible young gun owner i have a shotgun but i dont even have shells in my house i buy shells when i'm actually going use it like when i go duck hunting i run to walmart the day before the trip

  • @bobbert890 You have the right idea keeping you ammo locked up away from the gun but I would advise to keep the ammo locked up somewhere out of sight. You dont wat anyone to know where you keep your ammo with the exception of your parents of course. Be Safe

  • Great job, keep stressing these fundamentals! Awesome for you! Thank you!

  • I thought u didnt like glock?

  • @theBorat696 he loves the glock

  • @riegrieg ohhhh srry about that lol

  • @theBorat696 don't be.

  • @riegrieg yeah i didnt post that someone took over my accnt and must of commented that but i took it back over lol

  • I'm clad you did this video. I favorited this and I will keep this to show my kids as I teach them because I could not have said it better. Thanks.

  • @KelleyCD2011 glad you did this video*

  • Thanks for doing this video. Simple, basic rules that can save lives.

Every careless gun owner is not only a danger to themselves and others, but also gives ammunition to the gun control advocates.

  • I've never shot a gun before but of course i do want to go shooting sometime. I guess you could say im just taking initiative to learn about gun safety specifically since i already vaguely knew about some of these rules....Hopefully i get to shoot with one of my family members who do have firearms in the near future. Thanks for the video Hickok.

  • 'keep the weapon on say until you're ready to fire' is still one of the 4 according to the USMC... but I guess it's kinda going out of style with a long of the DAO's with no safeties or the automatically actuated safeties like the glocks and XDs.

  • If your ever in a shootout following rule #3 is critical because your body will send adrenaline in your veins causing hyper reflexes, shaking body parts and sometimes a twitchy trigger finger. Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire is summarized for "keep your finger off the trigger until you acquired a target and you are ready to fire."

  • Thanks for the great video Hickok, it should honestly be mandatory for anyone interested in firearms to view this video, and be subscribed to you :-D

  • I'm a kid and shoot a lot of guns and me my dad make sure we use gun saftey

  • These are the rules that I'm not only drilling into my child, but also into all her playmates. I make them all treat toy guns like real guns in my house, and they are power tools, not toys. I don't want any tragedies in my neighborhood.

  • Thank you so much for posting this, Hickok. I couldn't agree more about the importance of gun safety and always wearing eye and ear protection. A good friend of mine shot his AK-47 a couple times without ear protection and he told me that he couldn't hear well the rest of the day. It's a shame he learned the hard way.

  • I feel so much wiser after watching your vids, thank you!

  • Great video!

  • thanks a lot : ) I just went shooting with my uncle and when i shot the colt 45 (has a hard kickback) and he told me all abouto this. thanks

  • great laser saber reference

  • The 6 dislikes of this video are people who will shoot themselves or others.

  • I really appreciate you making a video to remind people of the importance of safety. It's something that should NEVER be taken lightly. A+. Keep up the good work, you are definately a role model

  • Thanks for this video. I am glad I have always followed these rules.

  • A brother-in-law once accidentally fired a Stevens .22 between my brother's feet, while rabbit hunting. When he grew up he became a Chief Warrant Officer in the Canadian Army, and at one time, he was chief weapons instructor for the entire Canadian Infantry. I'll bet he never told any new recruits about the incident.

  • you must watch my video attachment. HILARIOUS FAILURE of my mom shooting a shotgun.

  • i have seen all of your videos and cant wait for more.

  • my dad made me memorize those rules iver and over aha andi dont regret it

  • Firearm Safety and Training is the most important responsibility of any and all gun owners. Thank You for this very thought out instructional video.

  • Safety first, safety always.

A shooting range is where you encounter an incredible number of armed people. Mistakes can be deadly.

EVERYONE needs to follow safety rules. Always. No exceptions.

  • Very Informative, Many Thanks for Posting!

The more people stress the importance of firearm safety, the more we can hopefully save against a accidental discharge. It happened to me once, there is a hole in the wall to daily remind me (I won't plug it up for that purpose).

  • i wish my grandpa saw this vid because wen me and my grand pa went to a shooting range he diddnt know that the glock was loaded and he pulled the trigger while it was pointing at the instructor. no one got hurt. he missed. he never was a good shot lol. but that just shows how much gun safety is required. btw i love ur vids. especially the revolver and the winchester repeater vids, i love a good western gun. lol

  • It should be mandatory for everyone to watch this video before buying their first firearm.

  • great video, some really good tips that I didnt know about, such as the laser cutting up anything the gun sweeps and not leaving the firearm hanging at your side, which I admit I have been doing, ill stop now though. Thanks

  • How could 6 people dislike a video on Gun Safety!!! Must be liberal gun haters that hate guns so much they can't stand the thought that people might learn Guns aren't capable of shooting by themselves!!

  • Hi hickok, ive been watchin your videos since u started postion them! u're awesome, im a 15y shooter, i go to a shooting range every weekend since i was 12

really love the sport, duo to my age i cant get fire arms, buts ok, ill wait for it, i can shoot real guns at the range, and pellets at home

Most people thinks that "kids" shouldnt go to shooting ranges, or shoot fire arms, but hey, im a 15y and i use more safety then many "old" shooter at my range=/

just wanna thank u for the all your vids!

  • Hi this has nothing to do with this video, but I am commenting here cause you will be more likely to answer it. Do you own a Glock 31? Have you ever had any experience with the 357 SIG cartridge? If so, what is your opinion of them?

  • Great Video. Gun safety is super important, but I don't feel as though it should be a complex system. Keep it up!

  • Excellent job! Always good to review for us guys that thing we know it all and you are really clear for the newbies and youngsters.... Thanks!

  • Gonna always have that in mind when i finally get to shoot a gun, i realize that safety is number one, because something fun can transform, as we have seen so many times on the internet or the media, in a tragedy. Thanks for the lesson!

  • Nice videos! I don't know how it is in the US military nowadays, but here in Finland we were taught to always point the gun in the ground when not shooting, although it felt a bit weird especially in winter when the barrel was always full of snow and ice after moving around... but I guess it is much safer that way...

  • Hey Hickok45! If only to echo the numerous earlier posts, excellent safety instruction and thanks for taking the time to put it together along with all your other vids. It's all very informative. Much appreciated.

  • you should add to that macho idea "it's macho not to wear a seat belt."

  • A few years ago, very good friends of my family went to visit their grandparents (a little family meeting). While the grownups were in the living room chatting, the kids(13-16yo) were sitting in the balcony. One of them went inside and came back with the old shotgun of the grandfather that was hanging on a wall, aimed at one of the girls face to scare them and pulled the trigger. This little "joke" became a HUGE family tragedy. I knew her since she was born;her mother needed 2 years to recover.

  • @Doan84 What I want to say is, never ever leave a gun lying around, especially not loaded! And hiding it under the bed and stuff doesn't work (as they will find it anyway). If you don't carry it, then put it into a Safe and keep the key always with you.

  • @Doan84 , So, so sad.

  • @Doan84 natural selection at its finest

  • @shadowsteel5 wtf is natural selection about it!? the one who died hadn't any connection with guns. the 2 in fault didn't get any punishment, as it was seen as an accident.

Sorry, but your comment is pretty stupid and actually offending an innocent DEAD Girl!

  • @shadowsteel5

When your words are no better than silence, it is always best to remain silent.

  • @Doan84 my uncle's friend was shot in the chest when his cousin started messing around with his father's revolver. luckily he survived, barely, but its stories like this and especially like yours that make me so stingy about gun safety.

  • @Doan84 i would have never recovered

  • @Doan84 This is why parents should teach their children about guns and gun safety. Parents now a days are scared of guns-they shouldn't ever be scared of guns (well, unless your infront of the barrle). The best safety on a guns is your finger and you.

If you don't teach your kids about guns, one day they'll be givin one and won't know what to do. If you know what you're holding, the better prepared you are.

I can guarantee you that if he was taught gun safety, that would have never happen.

  • @Doan84

i'm sorry to hear that man..

  • @Doan84 Holy crap.

  • @Doan84 How long did it take the kid that pulled the trigger to recover?

  • @SteveSnavely I have no contact to him, and don't dare to ask the girls parents.

But can someone realy recover from such an experience?

  • @Doan84 Man thats sad...

  • @Doan84 Dude you don't recover from losing a child. They are irreplaceable.

  • greetings from germany :D

  • we were trained to point it into the air because although pointing into the ground is safe to a degree, there are still chances that the round could ricochet

  • The only safety video iv'e ever genuinely wanted to watch.

  • Excellent Video Hickok45, as are all your video's. I haven't "not seen" any of them. In my opinion, this one is one of, if not "the" most Important one. Thanks for everything!

  • Great video, we had a incident at the local gun show last week, someone handed off there personal carry after poping the clip out but there was one in the chamber and the guy he handed it to dind't check it either and pulled the trigger,it went off hit a cement wall about 3 ft from another vendor ,the whole place was in a up roar, it was not good !

  • I don't if anyone has posted this but the moment i saw this video i thought of this:

"If a sportsman true you'd be

    Listen carefully to me:

    Never, never, let your gun

Pointed be at anyone..." - Mark Hanbury Beaufoy

  • In the firearms course we have to take in Canada to get our licence, we were instructed to not even extend the trigger finger over the frame or trigger guard. They told us to simply grip the gun in a way that makes a fist until we turn off the safety and shoot. It seems to really work into your mind, not to let your finger wander to the trigger. Great video and good education, thanks Hickok!

  • Gun safety is definitely something that can never be stressed enough, from the neophyte who may not have developed habits conducive to safe handling to the seasoned expert who may make the mistake of assuming he doesn't need reminding.

Everyone remember: all it takes is just one lapse in safe handling to cause permanent tragedy.

  • This is the best video on the 4 basic gun safety rules I have ever seen. The in depth detail is what most other videos miss. Great job Hickok45.

  • Amazing. Hickok, you rock. I favorited this. I have a few good gun channels subscribed to so that I can see people's fire-arms and see more about their individual collections, I love checking them.... But I think this is the ONLY fire-arm video I have favorited ontop of a subscription. It's extremely important to always remember these rules, and having them on my favorite list will have me checking it out more, not just re-affirm the rules (as we all need at times), but to show others too.

  • @moldyskittle , Thanks!

  • I just love your videos hickok45, all of them teach me something new everytime I watch them! What do you think is the best gun lock for a .22 revolver?

  • thanks for the reply, realy helpfull.

  • Thanks for the reminder on gun safety. Excellent PSA from a man who knows his subject.

  • hickok45 mark those dummy rounds with something so they are clearly visible as dummy rounds.

  • @theprezz , Don't want to. I want them to look normal from the side and front. The large hole drilled in the back is clear enough.

  • @hickok45 there is only one other way it can fire without the finger on the trigger, next time u load your garand let the bolt slam shut on a round in the chamber and then pull that round out of the chamber. i guarantee u there will be a dent in the primer, garands are known for that and it scares the shit out of me

  • How can anyone dislike a video on weapon safety? Being in the military that's one thing they constantly drill into our heads is weapon safety. As usual Hickok45 excellent video. Keep up the great work.

  • Thank you, sir.

  • We learnet this rules in the youth shooting club and after in the Army. Really good to know it and all people should know this rules! You have always to show this all people because you can not be sure THEY checked their weapons... :-/ by the way: You check your Glock19 very easy! Are you that strong or did you modified the gun?

  • this is definitely you're most important video.

  • Another great example of responsible gun ownership. I, personally, greatly appreciate the effort put towards these videos, and the messages they communicate.

  • Thanks Hickok. I found this video on reddit.com and was curious to see how serious it would be. I've been curious about getting my CCW license and taking the classes, but i've always been pretty terrified of owning a gun. You've greatly helped me understand further the necessity of security in playing with guns. I hope many more watch this video intently.

    Once again, thank you.

  • Good job! I'm a part time assistant firearm instructor with plans to become a NRA certified instructor. Just taught two classes today. It is up to all of us to practice and teach gun safety. It only help our shooting sports and our CCW rights to educate as many people as we can.

  • That shot gun comment is very true. Rat shot for pistols bounces off every thing exept paper and geliten. Me and my brother got really lucky, I bought a pack of them and then took an plastic bin and taped a target to it and all the BB's bounced off and hit us. Thank god for eye protection!!!

  • There is a "tactical" range attached the main range that I go to. There aren't any specified lanes, so how do you suggest one carries a long gun or handgun? There's just a lot of walking around involved, so do you point it toward the ground or what? (Getting a holster anyway, but still, just reference for whatever comes up. lol)

  • Wow. Six people (as of this post) actually gave it a thumbs-down? Just...wow.

  • I am working to get my firearms license and this is just what i've been taught at the shooting range! Great explanations!

  • I always obsessively rack the slide. I don't care if other people think anything of it.

  • Great vid Hickok! Only thing you didnt mention (directly) is to also be aware of what is behind your target. Life is good.

  • @scuds03 , That falls under "Be sure of your target."

  • @hickok45 Haha Homer Simpson DOH!!

  • @scuds03 DUH!!!

  • @scuds03 DUH!!! Look at the entire description of the vid!!

  • Is anyone else annoyed by the idiotic ads around these videos for some self-defense training camp that say "The 9mm Won't Save You"?

Man, what a bunch of BS propaganda!

  • @FanOfZeppelin Yea that AD is lame but I like Hickoks vids enough to click em anyway to help him pay for ammo!

  • @FanOfZeppelin , It's some company trying to get attention by slamming perhaps the most popular self defense round on the planet. I'd rather they used a pic of Cindy Crawford to get our attention. They should realize that their "hook" is something that is very likely to offend the very market they're after. Nothing wrong with the 9mm.

  • @FanOfZeppelin Agreed, I'm seeing some pizza ads, however...

  • Good stuff. Cooper's 4 rules are the best.

  • Hickock, do you ever wear safety glasses on top of your glasses, for instance at an indoor range or event that requires it? What kind do you use? Most safety glasses I see are not designed to work on top of prescription glasses and can be annoying or uncomfortable.

  • I just printed those 4 rules out and stuck it in my range bag. Thanks for everything Hickok

  • This is amazing, just recently we (my dad n brothers) have been tryn 2explain 2my nephew how dangerous guns are...we shoot rabbits with .22's and are tryn 2explain 2him the severity of ANY weapon..he seems 2think were over reacting (as kids always think anyway) but we drill it in to him all the same...this vid will defo convince him otherwise and make him realise were not being OVER CAREFULL...Great work hickok as always and a huge thumbs up for always checking to see if the guns are clear.

  • @jiggaboozombie That's a great thing to do and the other thing is if anybody breaks into your house and you walk in on them they're not going to be able to shoot you with your own gun. If they brought their own then you're S.O.L. but most petty thieves don't, I believe. And I always make triple sure that all my ammo is locked in my ammo-can when my nephews are around, so I totally get your point.

  • ....... Great video. Wether you're a Rookie or a Pro the 4 basic rules always apply to you.

  • I love racking the slide excessively. It's fun and it sounds cool, man. I love gun safety and over exaggerating it.

  • Great video. Are you a teacher? You'd make a good one.

  • @PowerliftingWSM He's a physics teacher I believe

  • @PowerliftingWSM , Guilty as charged. There's nothing more fun than picking on kids all day long! :-) Literary endeavors mostly - no physics. I barely understand gravity, as it is.

  • Excellent! Thank you for doing this. I made my young boys watch this for training.

  • short question hickok y no dangling? i honestly do it

  • @ychsyute

Because you can shoot your foot, or the limb of someone next to you. The point is to keep the firearm "down range" or in the same direction you're shooting in. And if it goes off at that time, its going in a safe direction.

  • Hey hickhock, i read what you said about bullets not just going off by themselves. how carefull should i be with them when handaling after they are reloaded. don't know if it makes a difference but it is a 45/70 goverment shell loaded with black powder 405 grain bullet thanks seen all your videos i enjoy them a lot keep on with them

  • @muzzalblackpowder , I would not beat on them with a hammer, but generally you can just treat them like a box of nails almost. I mean dumping them into other containers and such; however, something freakish COULD happen. It's juts that the primer has to get hit just right for one to go off. Then it's not going to shoot, of course; it's just going to be a big firecracker.

  • @hickok45

I would think that if a single primer goes off, it would be wise be a little more wary of shards of brass flying about, no?

  • @muzzalblackpowder If a round goes off outside of the chamber the bullet actually doesnt fly. The heavy bullet pretty much stays put and the much lighter casing is what will fly across the room.

  • Gun safety never goes out of style.

  • nice job hickhock! John Dean "Jeff" Cooper was a great man. some of his quotes and life experiences are very good examples.

  • Really thorough video, thnx man

  • great vid hickok love the simplified 4 rules instead of the ten commandments of guns safety
