  • tin foil is a cheaper way than mylar, and you could add a middle brace wich would be benificial, and instead of using the rockwool, use pea stone to set the seed plugs in, and cover the drain with screaning as so the stone cannot fall through, stone holds its heat well it would work well with the plastic that you have already have as it could get the light, which would warm up the planter, and a warm root system is a happy one, please tell me if this advice was of any help, chow

  • if you leave them on a heater or someplace warm it will help germination. since the sun's heat isn't enough to start it, plus its winter

  • grow some weed man

  • i just want to say thanks your home made Hydroponics sytim has helped me alot i have allway been told that a Hydroponics sytim would cost a lot of money i have a pump so im going to make one of my own um just have one ? how long would it take to grow weed with this Hydroponics sytim and do my roots have to have no light on them right thanks

  • 0:01

  • Though this was for weed it's nice job well done man

  • wouldnt the cover on seedlings b better if it was clear? dont they need light? also few holes in it for air 2 get in n out ? happy growing m8 :)

  • all plants getting same solution wont help.... tomatoes love food most...

  • Ever thtought of growing Cannabis?

  • Great you got the top covered. That was a cheap and very easy way. Briliant old chap.

  • Hi dude, you are creative!

I am Brazilian from Porto Alegre, if possible need to know about the timer''water down'', do not speak English very well, but I understand, thank you!

  • hahahaaaa. da dude is preparing for the economic collapse. those who didn't prepare will die early.

i bet he is buying gold too.

  • Rick,

What did you use to shoot this? I am interested to know if you used the Flycam or some other tripod device? I am considering getting a flycam for a book trailer I am going to shoot but wondered if it would be worth the investment--if it can improve the quality of some of the shots we are gonna have to get done. I have a Sony Z1u...so it's bigger than a handycam and will be shooting in 24p. I would appreciate your response. Thanks.

  • Hi

    The camera was just hand-held.

You need to see my video named:

Flycam 5000 - U-Flycam - cheap stabilizers my honest opinion

It'll give you the answers you are looking for :o)

  • Update time!

  • yes - hope to do one this week :o)

  • Once you get a good amount of roots showing, you can run it full time. Then you will notices masses of roots growing onto the gutter but also plenty of very fine 'air roots' . Once you have this, growth should be explosive. Finally the big rockwool have a groove on the underside which should face the flow direction to allow water to pass underneith. Good luck and check be sure to check into the best chilli growing website in the country. Chris

  • Cheers for the tip Chris - I'm going to give it a try to see what happens.

  • I had a thought today and there is something else that may help.

You should allow the rockwool to start sprouting roots before putting onto the gutter. The way in which you are doing it is quite probably hindering growth. Rockwool does hold lots of air when saturated but not really enough for good root growth. The best way is to let the rockwool dry out somewhat in the begining stages, so roots search for water. You could do this by just running your gutter for 5 mins twice a day.

  • the gutter. Your not too nutrient demanding plants probably only need a water change once a month at this stage. I worried once starting chillis in hydroponics and wasted lots of nutrient changing the tank once a week. I posted on your channel comment board, be sure to pop along to 'chillis galore' and introduce yourself. Chris

  • Thanks for the great advice Chris. I agree, I need to look at not having such a varied mix of plants as some are doing well but others are not. This setup is still in the experimentation stage, but the comments I get are extremely valuable to me to help get a better understanding of how this all works.

    Cheers

    Rick

  • Hi again, You may find that the mix of plants you have require different nutrient strengths. For example: your leafy herbs may be getting enough but fruiting tomatoes will be struggling. I think in the long term, its perfect for lettuce and herbs but maybe not chillis and tomatoes. Also I will mention that I don;t feel the bigger rockwool cubes are necessary for the lettuce and herbs. if you can find a way to support them, the roots will do just fine growing out of the smaller cube and onto...

  • i found biobizzs soil produced better growth rates due to its high ec level of 2.2. Having tried biobizz i found its growth rates were actually better than some instances of hydro. Try biobizz and see for urself. Plagron do royalty mix and contains enough nutrients for two months growth

  • I'm inspired to brew some ale. Its been years. But I haven't got much space or an airing cupboard. Its really satisfying growing things isn't it?

    LOvely

  • Looks good, hope those shelves are movable to add more room when they are in the fruiting stage.

  • it will not burn your roots system.i forgot to say, when you flush your reservoir after 7 days, you only use the poroxide and water for 24 hours only.after you go back with your nutrient.

  • Thanks for the credit on the mylar blankets, they're way cheaper than buying a roll of mylar.

Now all you need is some supplemental lighting try cfl's 27K (Compact Fluorescents 2700 Kelvin bulb temp) for the vegitative stage on a timer so that your plants get 24 hours of light it will help your plants to really take off.

  • Great tips on the lighting - I'm currently looing into the possibility of experimenting with some LED lights - but not sure yet.

  • LED's are nice but too expensive and there are some that feel that they're not proven yet.

While they cost less to run the cfl's are really cheap a 4 pack here is under $10.00 23 watt cfl's in reflectors work well and you can place them very close to the plants.

  • clay pebbles and a flood and drain system once you perfect this it is virtually trouble free, your system could easily be adapted. vegetable rights and peace.

  • would love to, but it's illegal in the UK :o(

  • Rick, Looks v good. When they have grown up to full size you could also try taking a 'cutting'. Cut off one of the leaves (Tomato plant) and 'plant' it in the sytem. It should grow. If it does then you will save the early growth time for the next cycle fo growing. Hope you can follow/understand this comment!!!!

  • Thanks for the tip - I'll certain give that a try :o)

  • Wait - I thought you were making wine! O_O

    This is brilliant!

  • LOL - making both!

Tune in next week and I'll be baking bread from flour that I've ground myself! (no, really!) :o)

  • Way to go, Rick !

More of us need to start growing more of our own food again.

    Peace !

  • excellent !

  • you may want to drain your reservoir every 7 days...and use only water with a cap of 35%peroxide for cleansing the roots...and another point, you can use foliar spraying, but with no lights on the plants!

good growing by the way! keep it up!

  • Thanks for the tip - won't the peroxide kill off the plants?

  • it will not burn your roots system.i forgot to say, when you flush your reservoir after 7 days, you only use the poroxide and water for 24 hours only.after you go back with your nutrient.another pointer, you want to keep an eye on your PPM.for start you can start with 500 to 700 ppm for the first 2 weeks of growing...week 3 you can go to 900 to 1100 ppm.week 4 of growing you can bring it to 1200 to 1500 ppm.

  • but at this point it can be crucial for burning yor plants...i did a few times and it work well for me.with burning the roots!on the budding stage, you can keep it at 1100ppm for the next 3 weeks.and then start by lowering the ppm.week 8 around 500ppm.week 9 around 300.rest of the croping time just use water.flushing period, you can keep it for 2 weeks...not less...

  • because you will have the taste of the nutrient of not doing so.for your water, your PH should be around 5.6 to 6.3 if i remember! i used alot of Advanced Nutriences.organic that is!till then good growing!

  • Just a guess, but when i have plants like that in the ground, its usually because i've burned them with too much fertilizer.

  • Thanks for the tip Mark. I've removed the poorly ones and put them in water to see if that diloutes things a bit - will have to see what happens.

    How's the studio coming along?

  • Slowly, weather put everything back, finally got a start on the roof. Had to make a few modificationson the way due to wonky walls but hopefully another week will see the roof about done. Then I take over for the insides. It's bigger than I had though 28x13ft. Going to be good.

Have preduction meeting tomorrow for first short. Finally got enough bodies. I also found a chap with loads of properties so we've loads of sets too. First short hopefully on my channel in a month or less.

  • Cool video Rick!

  • I'd love to grow my own food!!!

  • Hi Mark - nothing stopping you! all you need is some mud and a seed! - This hydroponics lark is all just a fancy endulgence.

  • Start off with a fruit bush, you can't go wrong with them and they're 3 quid in lidls for 3.

  • Peace and Love!
