    Think about it. The car had up to 600hp and a weight of only around 1 ton. That's more power per weight than a Bugatti Veyron has!

    The race distance is 20km, the S1 made it in 10m and 47,85secs so it had an AVERAGE speed of 111kph! With such a monster of a car I think 220kph on the straights is realistic...

  • @Donnerfink How is tuning a car with skill, and not frying it, ruining a classic? I bet that thing is insane to drive. Cars are, especially the great ones, are not meant to be put in show rooms and looked at. You either drive it and enjoy the sound and the experience of the machine, or get the fuck out. It would be a total shame for a car like that to remain stock and undriven, sitting in a room... still for the rest of its life. What's the matter with you? That's just depressing.

  • He is the best driver ever. He won the championship in a shit buicket Ascona 400 with rear wheel drive against 4 wheel drive cars with more horsepower.

    Sometimes he won by minutes in a single stage.

  • It's always very hard to say if someone is best driver ever. Juha Kankkunen, Tommi Mäkinen and Sebastian Loeb have all four rally championships. Also Marcus Grönholm and Ari Vatanen are good choices for title of "the best rally driver ever". 1988 Vatanen set new record for the Pikes Peak (search youtube "ari vatanen pikes peak"). All these have been unbeatable in their prime time.

    That said, Walter Röhl is a great driver and greatest german rally driver ever, without a doubt.

  • You should have a look at the championships. Röhrl allways had bad luck, the cars broke or other problems. When the cars were reliable he was nearly unbeatable. If he hadn't done only 6 rallys in 83 he would have 3 championships, but he didn't want at that time.

    When Röhrl was active, rallys were real rallys, not that crap nowadays, only in the daylight and maximum length of 20 minutes or so.

    Röhrl was elected Rally Driver of the Millenium by a jury of Experts.

    @SgtH3nry3... 1200 HP on loose ground, that CANNOT been driven. The Engine of the S1 was Worthless junk after the Race... imagine that 600 HP are trapped in a 2.1 liter engine

  • i also read it, but after checking various sources, i think they're only roumors...i know audi tried a 1000hp car for the '87 season, but the drivers said it was undrivable, so they gave up. anyway, in '87 fia banned group B and the quattro engine ended being used in the usa racing series and won the championship in the 1st year. it had 800hp

  • I can imagine that, even the more experienced dragracers have difficulties keeping a 1500 hp Skyline in a straight-line.

  • If bmw got scrap 80k miles or over in-line 4 engine bock and mad 1.5L 1500hp engines out of them.. audi can and did get over 1200hp out of in-line 5. ford had 850hp cars and did not win grop B rally..

  • Yes, BMW's old M10 block could deliver 1500 hp.

    Porsche had an old 1500cc boxerengine (from a Bug, no kidding!) which also delivered 1500 hp.
