Great Sci-Fi of its era. Of course it's a load of bunkum really. Because no computer can have that level of independant contol over it's own functions. They a dumb machines and only do what we program them to do. And I can envisage no scenario where any government would give over it's entire power to a machine to determine policy.
The Forbin Project is a classic film of its kind. There have been loads of thse apocalyptic scenarios about some all powerful machine taking over the World...Sky Net?
A super computer's physical interface should be limited to screen monitors and nothing else. Sadly, with computer worship growing every day the main premise of this film is no longer that unlikely.
This was shown in my high school computer class back in the early 80s. Used to think, as we returned to our little green screens, "how the hell...." But now? I can see "how the hell".
An entirely underrated (and somewhat forgotten) film (with a great "Modern" score). It plays so well after 40 years. Probably the best commentary on the interface of the human ego with technology since "Forbidden Planet" and, though horrifying, can be read somewhat as a black comedy. Stunning.
I saw this in the 70s during the fake and make believe cold war era. I always knew no such thing would happen. We were taken for a ride. Notice the all seeing eye in this movie. More illuminati
shit to keep the sheeple4 scared. Good movie though.
By the year 1970, the personal computer will be the size of Rhode Island!... And yes, Eric Breaden has had a long career on The Young and the Restless... Before this movie, he also had a stint on "The Rat Patrol" in the 60's, were his name was Hans Gudegast...
I just watched a widescreen version, next to this fullscreen version . I never realized how much is cropped. Whole mountains in the opening scene, and people, including Forbin when the president is giving his press release.
Info for the widescreen can be found with a binsearch for colossus in the last couple days.
I have always wanted to see this film, but for one reason or another never have...Thanks! The thought of the movie just came into my head a minute ago and here you were!!
I know that, you know that, everyone knows that. Hollywood knows that too but they also know that it would make a lousy movie so they ignore rule number one.
These guys had it all wrong - all they had to do was load Microsoft Windows on this beast and then all those orange LEDs/nixies would have gone blue from the screen of death.
I really liked how television, and the media was emphasized. The hand held camera, the coverage and tracking shot going into the speech by the President. Gave the sense of the medias growing influence...its hard to believe it was just 1970
The first four minutes or so make me think of some of the interior scenes of the Death Star in the original Star Wars movie. Anyone know if George Lucas used this movie for inspiration?
I for one welcome our robot overlords :D

Why did they have to call it Colossus!? Colossus actually *was* a real computer - built in 1943 at Bletchley Park
for code breaking.

An impregnable invulnerable computer is given absolute irrevocable control over nearly half the world's nuclear arsenal.
What could *possibly* go wrong???

Holy vintage computer Batman! My iPhone has more computer power than the entire Collusus setup.
Cool movie though. The isilloscope in the beginning of the movie reminds me of the sound from the 6 billion dollar man when he used his enhanced eye

sorry hit the wrong button, met to reply.
It is only widescreen for the first few minutes, then goes full screen.
The old format laser disk (about 12 inch diameter) was all widescreen.
