All performances hit bulls eye; adapted screenplay by Odets and Lehman, cinematography by James Wong Howe, and direction by Alexander Mackendrick, nothing less than brilliant.
I was too young to have gone to nite clubs then, but I remember Times Sq. in 1957 and it wasn’t such a nice place. The smell of hot dogs and orange soda from Nedick’s, adult movies, cheap game arcades. Think Midnight Cowboy a decade earlier.
Tony Curtis made a special appearance when 'Sweet Smell of Success' was shown in the St. Louis Art Museum's auditorium in the fall 1997. He answered my question from the audience about the film's British director, Alexander Mackendrick in that familiar Bronx-accented vocalese. Dressed in all black in suit, pants, and shoes. And I have some color Kodaks to prove it.
Maybe my favorite film ever. A movie filled with sleazeballs and ruthless dogs, and the era here just shows the bubbling, bubbling of the 60's waiting to emerge, especially in these club scenes.
@GhostSnake -- Hi! I love the sound track, too. Here's a link you might find helpful, if you want to buy the CD try a website called Dusty Groove. if you like Elmer Bernstein's score for this movie, you'll love his score for "The Man With the Golden Arm," a great film with Frank Sinatra and Kim Novak. Chico Hamilton's combo is featured in both movies. By the way, I located "Sweet Smell of Success" music by doing a search on Chico Hamilton. Good luck and enjoy!
Some movies meant to be black and white and this is one of them what a classic don't make these anymore, There will never be another Tony Curtis and Burt Lancaster great casting.
I want this video on my 362 phone.

One of Stephen Bogarts favourite films & recommended by him so I'm checking it out

Curtis is beautifully unsentimental in this picture: "Your meaty, sympathetic arms." OUCH.
Rest in peace, Sidney. Where you are now, there's nothing but the best of everything.

God- Burt Lancaster & Tony Curtis were great in this movies. A Manhattan that doesn't exist any longer. An edgy & gritty movie.
rgoddess1 1 year ago
@rgoddess1 The story was set in NYC but actually it was filmed in San Francisco! Still, they captured the era of NYC you're referring to quite well.
