"Ours is not to wonder why" We will never know the political intrigues. All we know is that our Paul Simon sang beautiful sensitive song for those who died in the unthinkable. In our culture we value life and we always will - and the freedom to express our feelings.
Don't wanna break the mood, however those NYPD & FDNY dying of cancer, after inhaling dust at the WTC on 911, who yet remain silent, about what they saw or heard that deviates from the official line, will be proved fools in the long run!
According to Lt Richard Smiouskas FDNY, in an interview 27 November 2001 ..following the strike on the North Tower, "an engineer got me onto the roof of WTC 2," the South Tower, "I saw people in the windows, they weren't jumping, they were being forced out!"
Music sparks every emotion depending on the tune and situation. Perfect choice for a ten year memorial. RIP all that passed on 9/11 accept for the terrorists!
Paul made a very insightful choice to play this song. I volunteer at the 9-11 Memorial and can tell you that the most compelling part is the absence of those whose lives were lost. The Memorial Pools are called "Reflecting Absence" and I know that many of us miss the void left in our lives by the loss of these innocent people AKA the Sound of Silence.
However, of course there is no memorial service,or apology for 1,000 000 Iraqi civiians who died because of the irrational USA's aggression.
I often feel ashamed of the actions of my so-called government, in the UK. Why does America seem to show so little shame for the actions of it's leaders?? The faux "patriotism" of the US people stuns me. Wouldn't a true patriot care that their country was being turned into a model terrorist state?
@Sascopa Because of the media. The media itself is a tool by the government used to keep us blind to their actions overseas. While they go so far as to show wrongs commited by individual soldiers, they will never show the innocent lives taken by their method of combat. As an American it infuriates me to no end, but there is little that can be done about it. While Occupy Wallstreet looked promising, it's become little more then a cesspool of a bunch of people with no concrete plan.
Instead of marching on congress for the lives they've taken, they're marching on wall street for it's greed. Admirable no doubt, but there's little that's going to do when the current regime happily endorses the activities of the financial sector of the market.
I dislike this for 1 reason. The american are the real terrorists. Ppl have been thought to belive it was some1 else but it was all orchestrated a lot close to home then u believe
@fuckueddie why would you let that stop you from liking this video then? i agree with you, but that doesn't take anything away from this performance. it's not a compromise of your integrity to appreciate this at face value if nothing else.
This song is so powerful and beautiful. Paul Simon inspired me to sing my own tribute covering this song. I would so appreciate anyone who has the time to stop by my channel and listen to it. Absolutely fitting and touching song, it spoke a thousand words. x
As Gandhi once said: 'When I despair, I remember that all through history, the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers and, for a while, they can seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of this. Always'.
This was so moving... the crowd immediately stood motionless and silent.
I heard later that Paul Simon was scheduled to have sung "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" ... I am so glad he chose to sing this one instead. He must have been touched by the solemn attitude of everyone there - the politicians didn't even get much applause, and often, none.
This was beautiful - and I'd venture to say Simon got the biggest hand of the morning. Thank you, Paul.
A lot of song writers won't say what their song is about, so that you take your own meaning from it. Maynard from Tool is a good example. I'm not sure if this has "no meaning" like he has said.... the lyrics are way too suggestive. But whatever. Hearing this song at a 9/11 event doesn't make me think of the victims, it makes me think of the government and their lies, and how we shouldn't believe everything we hear from them.
the goverment caused 911, youve all been duped, as you have been and continue to be.. they have you all so brainwashed, you cant see whats right in front of you.. stop chasing boogeymen, and start wising up before its too late.. this goverment strips you of freedom, it doesnt give you freedom... its time you remove the shit from your brains that theyve been feeding you for generations
@SeeksOnlyJesusChrist The song was written as a post-teen angst message about how people are unable to communicate and love each other. You can read all about it at songfacts, or just watch the original live version of the performance.
still beautiful.... the voice may not be quite the same but the emotion is still there... RIP to all who died and kind thoughts and prayers to friends and families.
@longfootbuddy You literally sound like EVERY other hipster on the planet. Trust me, I had a 2 month phase where I thought the exact same way. Too bad I'm not blissful, haven't been since I was a child. Your counterculture is just a big hypocritical, elitist movement. You aren't original, you are a conformist, you aren't surrounded by "sheep". Okay? We may be surrounded by idiots, but that doesn't mean we have to act like we are enlightened and everybody else is inferior to our intellect level.
@iceseekers look dumbass, im not a hippy or part of some group youre refering to.. im just sensable and astounded that you fools cant see past your red white and blue colored asses.. you live in a fantasy, and ignore reality because its slightly covered with transparent lies.. i know you people dont want to face this reality, but your denials and stupidity doesnt make the elephant in the room disappear.. and you mocking clear thinking people only impresses idiots like yourself
@longfootbuddy You are a 9/11 truther. A deluded member of a counterculture... and why are you trying to tell me what kind of person I am? I live in a fantasy? Are you fucking kidding? I live in dystopia you fucking idiot. Do you think everybody in USA sits at home and waves the flag around while watching the news? Most people in America fucking hate it here. You also have the stupid fucking assumption that I, along with everybody in America, is a republican. You are delusional. Fuck you.
@longfootbuddy The irony of people like you is fucking ridiculous.. Get over your terribly close minded view of Americans. I am not even a patriot, not even close. Yet, because I am from America and disagree with conspiracy theorists like you, you imply that I am a patriotic, republican idiot. You are just as close minded as the people you mock, fucking hypocritical elitist douche. You aren't as intelligent as you think you are bud, there are tons of assholes like you.
@iceseekers you dont know your ass from a hole in the ground.. first you call me a hipster, now im an elitist.. you just make it up as you go.. the fact is, youre stupid, youre wrong, youre misinformed, and youre a joke that thinks you can make yourself feel better by attacking people that can think properly.. go back to your nightly news, dim-wit.. keep calling people that arent as stupid as you, "crazies, truthers, conspiracy theorists, hipsters, etc." whatever.. youre an illogical fool
@longfootbuddy I don't watch the news, I thought I already told you that. You need to stop attacking the entire population of a country just for not being 9/11 conspiracy theorists. You assume so much based on so little. "Oh, he doesn't think George Bush caused 9/11, therefore he must be a christian, a republican, and watch the news all the time". Is it not fair to ask that you don't blindly label somebody just for not sharing ONE opinion of you? we probably aren't that different in most areas.
@iceseekers now youre saying im the labeler? youre the one that called me the hipster and elitist and all that nonsense.. why dont you just fuck off? you have no brain
@iceseekers no, i dont label the entire country anything.. theres some good people here, that understand whats going, and care.. but the majority of them are as clueless as you... its a shame that people like you make it harder for them to wake up to it all.. its clear that the popular thing to do is to laugh at people that are talking sensably now days.. just look what they did to ron paul in 08.. "hes wacko! hahah!" you people are such losers.. mocking the best guy on the stage...whats new
@longfootbuddy You also seem to have a very skewed perception of me. The people you insult are nothing like me, and you should really analyze people and their words before assuming they belong to a social group which you look down on. For instance, you implied that I am a person who thinks Ron Paul is wacko. False, I think he has some great ideas, and I rank him on top of the other republican candidates (whom i think are idiots). Anyway, I think this bickering has gone on long enough, bye!
@iceseekers yes, please go away.. youre nothing but a hypocritical bullshitter.. find some other person to defend your beloved, lying, murderous goverment from
@longfootbuddy Again, you imply that I am an American Government apologetic. Wrong again, I don't trust any of the shit they do, but I'm also not deluded enough to think that 9/11 was this big fucking propaganda conspiracy, the evidence that it was an attack by Al Qaeda is overwhelming. Everybody knows this government is corrupt and unjust. That's just common knowledge by now. You just take things to an extreme level, which is not necessary.
@longfootbuddy Again, you imply that I am an apologetic for my government. WRONG. I don't trust the shit they do. It's common knowledge that this government is run by a bunch of macho-aggressive christian dimwits, but to think that 9/11 was this big fucking conspiracy is just plain extreme and absurd. The evidence that Al Qaeda was behind the attack is unbelievably overwhelming. Most of the 9/11 conspiracy evidence is just speculation and shots in the dark, with no concrete evidence. anyway, bye
@iceseekers no, you dont apologize for it, you defend it against anyone that points out what it truly is... you are absurd and stupid enough to believe the lies of your goverment.. you pretend that all of us "hipster theorists" say what we say, based on nothing.. but you, my stupid annoying friend, are simply too dumb to see we're right.. fuck you, you mindless defender of tyranny
@longfootbuddy Why do you keep telling me that I am a "mindless defender of tyranny", or that I believe the lies of the government. Did i not just make it perfectly clear that I don't fucking trust them at all? Did you even read what I wrote? I even said there is some basic truth to your ideology, but to take it to an extreme is absurd. Why are you so fucking hostile? holy shit. This is why I can't talk with extremist thinkers, I strive for balance in nature. Read my previous comments this time
@iceseekers yeah, i read what you wrote, and all you do is talk nonsense and contradict yourself.. so you dont want to believe the extreme actions of your goverment.. so what.. as ive said, you and the majority of mindless americans have been duped because you cant face what the goverment has done.. they have murdered americans and lied to you, so you would hand them more power, and relinquish more freedom... get a clue, turdbrain.. wake up fool
@longfootbuddy I respect and appreciate questioning and open-eyes. Asking.. why is my government so full of shit? Why should i believe all of the lies and propaganda? On that note, I'm on the same page as you. Where we split, is the difference between balance and extremism. This goes down to preference. I like to be a moderate critic of America. I fucking hate it almost as much as I hate people. Yet, i strive for balance and open mindedness, so I refrain from thinking radically. Ok? is this fair
@iceseekers like i said, im not the one going to extremes.. the goverment has.. if you want to shoo off and mock people that can understand what has happened, you are making a mistake
@longfootbuddy see, that's a good point. you just gotta be aware of how open your mind is. I've had some close friends get so caught up with radical thinking that they turn into the close-mined people that they originally despised! ..Regardless of my political stance, there's always a group of people who will insult me, either the Right wing bible heads calling me an evil atheist, or the other side of the spectrum calling me a mindless sheep, which is way extremes repel me..
@longfootbuddy So please, stop insisting on calling me a "defender" of the country that I live in. If that's your view of me, then you're wrong. "It's common knowledge that this government is run by a bunch of macho-aggressive christian dimwits" -- i even said that, and you STILL fucking label me as a patriotic defender of tyranny. Unbelievable man. fucking unbelievable.
@iceseekers i know you think youre a big man for calling me a hipster and shooing me off and all that, but it only shows intelligent people what kind of dumbass you are.. if your happy with other fools cheering you on, so be it.. drown in your delusion
@longfootbuddy Okay, your arguments have reached the point of being nothing more than ad hominems and unsupported insults. It's apparent to me now that you have no intentions of having an intelligent debate, and you would rather revert to juvenile insults which mean nothing to me. For your own future reference, learn how to argue. Support your opinions, rather than making yourself look like a fool. Good day, sir.
@longfootbuddy And please, if you're going to attempt to debate with me, refrain from making 75% of your paragraph a list of ridiculous one-word insults. It really decreases the validity of your argument.
Don't let the terrorists win—repeal the Patriot Act! Our best defense again terrorism is our tradition & love of freedom, respect & awareness. Right-on Paul!
one of the greatest songs of all time. one of the most infamous events in history. our pearl harbor. rest in peace all those who passed that died. no words can describe my sorrow for the families
Très émouvant. Je n'oublie pas que les américains sont venus en 1945 en Europe nous libérer de la tyranie du nazisme. Reconnaissance sincère au peuple américain qui sait ce que veut dire "Liberté". I think of you. Thank you for all.
This song was written a long time ago about the John F Kennedy assassination and I find it very fitting for the memorial dedication ceremony. Still relevant after all these years.
Hearing this live on TV, I was quite moved and found it so strangely appropriate. What was once somewhat of a protest song comes full circle and catches the mood of somber reflection and the deep core of unity that we as Americans have when the veneer of seperation is stripped away. I love that feeling of essential goodness and big heartfulness...all who so selflessly helped one another on 9-11 and will always rise to do so when called upon. God Bless America!
The song uses the imagery of light and darkness to show how people's ignorance and apathy destroys their ability to communicate even on simple levels. The author sees the extent of communication as it is on only its most superficial and "commercial" level (of which the "neon sign" is representative). The poet's (character in the song) attempts are equally futile The words tell us that when meaningful communication fails, the only sound is silence
You are gone but you are never forgotten. Your memory will carry on within those of us whom you left behind forever. You are in Gods arms now and we will meet again.
To the heroes...Police, Firefighters, Paramedics, and everyday people who stepped up and put their lives on the line to save others...may our memories never grow faint, and may those heroes be blessed.
Even though Paul Simon wrote this song many years ago; it seems so powerful for this occasion. Although I'm old enough to have heard it when it was new, it will forever have new meaning and complexity after hearing it today- and even though Paul has sung this song countless times before, it just seemed to me that today he perfected it.
Its been 47 years since Paul Simon wrote the song. A wonderful tribute to all of humanity. And an appropriate song to go with the remembrance of 9/11. Too bad Art Garfunkel was not present today to join Simon in singing the song.
@CombatAce2oo9 unfortunately Art has serious voice problems for 18 months and is unable to perform. Had to cancel S and G tour last year because of this.
It's errie how prophetic these words are ! Simon must have felt unbelievably unsettled the first time he connected the dots of how this song relates to the horrific events of that day. For all everywhere - I just wish us peace .
Almost prophetically to a horrific circumstance on 9-11-01, the words written and recorded in 1964 speak of all who were affected; there were no words then and there are no words now...just Sounds of Silence...written by a New York son, who was all alone, in a quiet moment of reflection, filled with silence, like we are.
We are NEVER better than when we all come together as one.....9/11 helped us remember that, and since then we have shown the world that...... Those who hate, and try to spread fear FAILED

@iceseekers yeah, i read what you wrote, and all you do is talk nonsense and contradict yourself.. so you dont want to believe the extreme actions of your goverment.. so what.. as ive said, you and the majority of mindless americans have been duped because you cant face what the goverment has done.. they have murdered americans and lied to you, so you would hand them more power, and relinquish more freedom... get a clue, turdbrain.. wake up fool
longfootbuddy 5 months ago
@longfootbuddy I respect and appreciate questioning and open-eyes. Asking.. why is my government so full of shit? Why should i believe all of the lies and propaganda? On that note, I'm on the same page as you. Where we split, is the difference between balance and extremism. This goes down to preference. I like to be a moderate critic of America. I fucking hate it almost as much as I hate people. Yet, i strive for balance and open mindedness, so I refrain from thinking radically. Ok? is this fair
iceseekers 5 months ago
@iceseekers like i said, im not the one going to extremes.. the goverment has.. if you want to shoo off and mock people that can understand what has happened, you are making a mistake
longfootbuddy 5 months ago
@longfootbuddy see, that's a good point. you just gotta be aware of how open your mind is. I've had some close friends get so caught up with radical thinking that they turn into the close-mined people that they originally despised! ..Regardless of my political stance, there's always a group of people who will insult me, either the Right wing bible heads calling me an evil atheist, or the other side of the spectrum calling me a mindless sheep, which is way extremes repel me..
iceseekers 5 months ago
@longfootbuddy So please, stop insisting on calling me a "defender" of the country that I live in. If that's your view of me, then you're wrong. "It's common knowledge that this government is run by a bunch of macho-aggressive christian dimwits" -- i even said that, and you STILL fucking label me as a patriotic defender of tyranny. Unbelievable man. fucking unbelievable.
iceseekers 5 months ago
@iceseekers i know you think youre a big man for calling me a hipster and shooing me off and all that, but it only shows intelligent people what kind of dumbass you are.. if your happy with other fools cheering you on, so be it.. drown in your delusion
longfootbuddy 5 months ago
@longfootbuddy Okay, your arguments have reached the point of being nothing more than ad hominems and unsupported insults. It's apparent to me now that you have no intentions of having an intelligent debate, and you would rather revert to juvenile insults which mean nothing to me. For your own future reference, learn how to argue. Support your opinions, rather than making yourself look like a fool. Good day, sir.
iceseekers 5 months ago
@longfootbuddy And please, if you're going to attempt to debate with me, refrain from making 75% of your paragraph a list of ridiculous one-word insults. It really decreases the validity of your argument.
iceseekers 5 months ago
@iceseekers this isnt a debate, fool.. its you talking from your asshole

Très émouvant. Je n'oublie pas que les américains sont venus en 1945 en Europe nous libérer de la tyranie du nazisme. Reconnaissance sincère au peuple américain qui sait ce que veut dire "Liberté". I think of you. Thank you for all.

Apparently he was supposed to sing "Bridge Over Troubled Water", but chose "Sound of Silence" instead. It was a fitting, deeply felt decision.

This song was written a long time ago about the John F Kennedy assassination and I find it very fitting for the memorial dedication ceremony. Still relevant after all these years.

Thinking of all the victims of 9/11, including the 10 Australians that lost their lives that day.

One of the most beautiful, darkest and gentlest ballads ever. Such a simple and yet so powerful tribute by Paul Simon.
I share the pain of the americans who lost their relatives a decade ago on this tragic day. May God bless you and America.

It's errie how prophetic these words are ! Simon must have felt unbelievably unsettled the first time he connected the dots of how this song relates to the horrific events of that day. For all everywhere - I just wish us peace .

Still remain, the sound of silence.
