  • yeah thank you so much ! you are the best ! it work !

  • THANK YOU so much,This is exactly what I needed to know. I like that you said Don't Panic... :)

  • Thank you for the video! I think I killed my last machine with tension problems and not understanding what to do about it. Or maybe it's not dead, I'm gonna try these things, then see what's what. I've heard of these tips, but people don't usually explain in detail why they may help. So, thanks again.

  • hello i am so new to sewing, i was wondering wen i pull the cotton trhough the needle should i be able to pull through thread easily, as when i try to pull through more cotton at the end of sewing i can barely get any tp pull through thanks

  • @TheTonywsm I'm not sure if I understand exactly what u wrote, but the thread should have some tension (unable to pull) depending on the position the needle is in, to make the thread loose enough to pull turn the manual wheel/dial on the right most side of machine sort of the back.

  • IVE TRIED EVERY SINGLE TENSION SETTING AND NOTHING IS WORKING . I HAVE A BROTHER XL 3750 . SOMEONE HELP !!!

  • Thank you very much, this was very helpful. And very easy to fallow.

  • So helpful, thank you!

  • Help! My thread keeps bunching up in the back (the stiches on top look ok but underneath there is a lot of thread). When i test my bobbin it just free-falls, but i can't tighten the screw anymore. What can i do? Or do i need to buy a new bobbin?

  • @9465787 I can't really say without being able to see it, it would be the bobbin case and not the bobbin it's self and tightening all the way isn't really the solution it may need to be loosened it's just a matter of tension not too tight and not too loose somewhere in the middle there are some good videos I've seen here on YT on just how to do this correctly like by hanging the bobbin case holding it by the thread shake it a bit and it should let go only about an inch or 2 of thread at a time

  • @9465787 Btw the bobbin and bobbin case are rarely ever the problem, usually it's the upper tension that's off and it takes a good deal of patience to fix. Best of luck

  • thanks for the info - as it messes the good sight of the fabric - its just a mes and the back is ok - so the bobbin I think its my problem I will try to fix it thanks

  • Thank you very much for the info on this video! I have only just started sewing on my mums machine and it has been driving me mad not being able to fix the problem. I coulndn't figure out what was wrong. This is the first video that has explained about the bobbin casing screw. It worked first time its amazing, Now i know it wasnt me not being able to sew but the machine not set up right. THANK YOU!!!!!

  • Usually, the first thing I do with tension problems is CHANGE THE NEEDLE!!!!!!You need a new needle for at least every new project!!!! If that doesn't work, oil your machine. Last, adjust the tension! I learned all this with hours of painstaking frustration. Self taught as well:)

  • Some of you people are so petty and obviously haven't been listening to the advice given but rather ways of "catching her out" with terminology etc. Probably explains why you're having so much trouble sorting the problem.

  • My sewing machine teeth does not allow cloth to run...Can you help me with some options please?

  • It knots on the bottom and there's no "screw" on the bobbin case because there IS NO BOBBIN CASE! IT'S just a top loading thing and this video is useless

  • everytime this problem comes up i can never figure it out (self taught also) so i tends to get pretty frustrated. im glad you posted this up! thx!

  • Grrrr . . . tension issues - another reason why my sewing machine is in storage! Good video. Thank you.

  • Thank you for posting this video I was going to throw my machine out till I adjusted it using your help from this video.

  • According to all of the manufacturer technical sewing machine parts names the part with the "tiny" tension adjustment screw is called "bobbin case", the bobbin is the actual "spool" that holds the thread for the bottom of the machine.

    Regards,

  • For my sewing machine, I get that messy thread on the bottom. does that mean fix the bottom tension?

  • My feed dog on my Kenmore 1551 is in the down position and my manual says it should be in the up position. It will not stay in the up position and just falls down? Help!

  • didnt know what was wrong with my sewing maching... until i watched this video. Very very helpful. Thanks so much

  • I so appreciate this video! I haven't used my sewing machine in such a long time, mostly due to not knowing how to adjust the tension. It came with a vcr tape, so that doesn't help...but, you were a lifesaver! Now I am able to sew my Halloween costume as well as home decor items. Thanks for your easy to understand video. You're a gem!!

  • i have this problem. the lower thread keeps on showing on my upper thread. i tried everything HELP! please..

  • Comment removed

  • if you have to pay 70 bucks an hour i just buy a new mashine you can get a new mashine at walmart around $100 bucks

  • Thank you, i was ready to drop kick my machine!

  • I have tried every combination of upper and lower tension and it never made a difference! It was still pulling the bobbin thread through the top fabric!

  • @SandersinCali Have you tried cleaning your machine and maybe some oil too, depending on the age? It made a world of difference for me I couldn't even get my tension to mess up for quite a few months after I made the cleaning video. Also fixing the tension is like using the clutch on a car it takes being really calm and lots of Patience, which is of course the last thing you feel after something goes wrong with your machine. Last resort is taking it to the Sew and Vac shop for a tune up.

  • @SandersinCali and also use a basic quilting cotton like a sheet to test on not a fabric too heavy (like denim) or too light.

  • @Bluwhodesign hi , great video... your machine looks like mine... is it a brother??? if so do you know how to lower feed dogs??? got my machine second hand no manual. thank you .

  • @xgelytotx Mine is a Bernetta but it might be very similar so if you look at the bottom right hand side underneath the needle area there an image of what looks like two arrows facing up > with a line over them then another with a line through the arrows, you can see this at the time 0:11 in this video, So then open the cover to show the bobbin, right next to the bobbin case on the side there's a grey plastic lever push it up to the image of arrows with the line over them.

  • thanks! That explains so much, I just got a vintage machine at a yard sale and spent hours trying to figure out why it wasn't working. I was about to blame it on the machine and give up, but now it works great. Thank you!

  • Thank you so much! you are a life saver since I seem to have lost my sewing machine's manual and I am in the middle of sewing a quilt! Thank you again, this fixed my problem...(I also had no idea that you could change the tension on a bobbin!)

  • thank you for posting this. I am a beginer so this this HELPS out alot!

  • my sewing machine keeps binding up the thread on the fabric in the back almost like the top stich is not threading with the bobbin thread also when i adjust the tension it never fixes and now wont even thread thru i dont know what to do i want to wrip my hair out and my sewing place is $70 an hour i need help without paying that cause i dont have that

  • it does sound like a tension problem, and one of the biggest challenges with tension is that it's very aggravating and some times doesn't make sense. Trying to do it yourself is most productive after some zen meditation, a hot bath or what ever calms you down. Try to take it very slow moving the tension dial only a small bit at a time and testing the stitch. Don't forget to try re-threading it and cleaning the machine first.

  • As for that Sewing place- you can find used machines for 20 so 70 an hour is outrageously priced, shop around for vacuum and sewing mom and pop shops, or other sewing places, a good tune up for your machine is about $30 tops. If there's really nothing around your area tailors, dry cleaners or alteration people might give you help for even less just ask what they'd charge or if they'd help you out.

  • Thank you so much. It's been 15 years since I took home room and your videos are refreshing my memory. I'm trying to self teach how to make clothes for my daughters and I at the horse shows. Your videos are helping to bring some of this back to me. Thanks.

  • Will the thickness of the material matter when setting the tension? I'm trying to use thick faux fur.

  • yes very much, I'd set it first to an quilter thickness cotton, then adjust (go up in tension numbers to loosen) for the fur as needed. FYI try to avoid sewing more than two layers of the fur at a time, because it's very thick material.

  • Thank you! Lifesaver!

  • That thing you are holding is bobbin case, not the bobbin

  • so,when i get this big mess of thread on the back, does that mean that the tension on the bobbin is wrong??

because i always get this and i cant figure out why :(

  • not necessarily, I'd try fixing the top tension first cause it's pulling to much from the top, also lint could be messing with the bobbin cleaning the lint out is really important., I save the bobbin for last after trying everything else including one thing I seem to have left out rethreading the top and bottom first.

  • ok, ill try that. thank you very much! :)

  • omg it took me forever to find but this is the answer I was looking for thank you soooo much!

  • Glad I could help, good luck in your sewing.

  • thanks did not know there was a tension on the bobbin :)

  • thanks for this, was having this issue last week..thanks to you fixed now..

  • Thank you SO much! I needed to figure out how to adjust the bottom tension and now I know where the screw is! Your video was helpful!

  • I'm a beginner and am having this problem now. I changed the tension on the bobbin and I'm hoping it helps. I ended up putting my sewing machine away, though, because if it didn't help, I'll get really discouraged. lol Wish you lived near me, too.

  • I get terribly discouraged/ frustrated myself, especial when dealing with these problems. I try approaching the problem like an algebra problem that I can actually accomplish, it's a challenge that takes time and patience, but I openly admit I'll probably never understand it.

I've really had a great run without any tension troubles lately and I owe it all to that total machine cleaning vid I did some month back, I even had to fake some of this video to show what bad tension can do.

  • i so wish i lived near you so i could have you look over my shoulder if i tried sewing again. i always goof it up. and don't even ask what damage i did to my last sewing machine!

  • I think talent is a matter of desire, if you wanted to or needed to you could, or would find a way. I try not to fiddle with acting or modeling myself, and trust me you wouldn't enjoy my singing, I might get requests for modeling but never for singing, lol.

  • ha ha ha you are too cute for words! i just have to make tons of money and hire you to help me make things to wear on stage!
