When I hear about black women trying to bleach their skin in order to look lighter, it truly makes me cry. As a 19 year old female who has been suffering from Vitiligo (also know as Leucoderma) since I was 14 years old. I would do ANYTHING to be a beautiful dark shade. The African American skin tone is sooo beautiful to me. What will it take to get my people to see it, embrace it and accept it? I'm light skinned and I honestly don't see why people would want this. I've got bad acne and razor burn so thanks to my skin tone every little bump, every little blemish, shows up that much more. My chest is paler than the rest of me, my arms and my face are almost different colors...honestly having light skin isn't any better than being dark-skinned. My complexion shows up better in the dark, but my dark-skinned friends have a nice even tone whereas I don't. There's good and bad ::shrug::

I come from a family with extremly thick, long healthy hair....until we relaxe it. then it becomes very dry, very thin and break off like never before. and the hair is being deep condition and moisturized regulary. I've been natural around 5 yrs or so now, and though it's a pain to wash, deep condition, blowdry and press weekly, it's worth it.

I'm light skinned and I honestly don't see why people would want this. I've got bad acne and razor burn so thanks to my skin tone every little bump, every little blemish, shows up that much more. My chest is paler than the rest of me, my arms and my face are almost different colors...honestly having light skin isn't any better than being dark-skinned. My complexion shows up better in the dark, but my dark-skinned friends have a nice even tone whereas I don't. There's good and bad ::shrug::

the doc is wrong. he says bleaching wasnt seen b4 10yrs ago. thats not true. since the late 80s it was widely known that jamaicans were bleaching their skin in hopes of becoming brown and eventually look whitish. in the early 90s some artists sang about it,like Buju Banton. 12 yrs ago while talking to some jamaicans i was told that its very common and that they and others had actually started using cleaning bleach,like clorox to try to whiten out their skins. typical slave mentallity.

@AtrumMixer cause in the black community thats the "ideal" complexion in the minds of many african americans, i don't know exactly why, but it's like how alot of caucasions "ideal" is blondes, well in ours those with that yellowish light brown skin tone like Beyonce are seen as more attractive, the lightness of the skin is seen as softer & more pleasing to some, but above all, many see it as a way to seprarate themselves from the negavtive sterotypes that go along with being a "black" person

Wouldnt it just be easier to teach the children how to behave. Common sense, kindness and logic is what makes life tolerable to a large extent. If that is done NOW, they might have a very good generation to look forward to in just 20 years. No more skin bleaching needed.

Yes, there maybe a very small minority, mostly confused women who think that way but most african americans don't consider lighter skin black folk as more attractive than any other shades of blackness.U can be dark skin, brown skin, light, caramel or jet black, it doesn't matter. Now in the 40s, 50s, and 60s, that was the case but that shit played out in the 70s

I swear black people have no idea how blessed we are to be dark skinned. Having a darker complexion makes us age less faster, less prone to both being sun burnt, and skin cancer. If given the choice to look 60 when your actually 80, not have to worry about spider veins, crows feet, and liver spots or look 80 when your actually 60, have spider veins, crows feet, and liver spots which would you choose?

I'm sure the darker skinned people are not trying to be exactly white like a white person. It's just that a lot of them think they look better at their lightest. I cannot imagine who would wish for darker skin except those who are pale and just need some color.

@tatumforbes They both have prolonged side effects; tanning eventually will give you skin cancer and bleaching will eventually give you a burnt face as well as skin cancer. Really they both lead to the same outcome.. Both are bad. More whites tan than blacks bleaching their skin, believe me skin bleaching in the black community is not a common thing at all, the common thing is more of a hair issue than skin. I come from a family with extremly thick, long healthy hair....until we relaxe it. then it becomes very dry, very thin and break off like never before. and the hair is being deep condition and moisturized regulary. I've been natural around 5 yrs or so now, and though it's a pain to wash, deep condition, blowdry and press weekly, it's worth it.

I wonder why there's a huge market for skin bleaching in Japan as well? I've seen some Asian girls almost as pale as I am.
I don't mind my pale complexion, but it's not all that hot either, the less pigment you have in your skin the more translucent it becomes. My veins stick out like thick blue spiders webs...and my eyes look bruise all the time because of it. It's not a pretty picture. Especially if I wear black, I look like the dead.
