  • groove as hell from 2:22

  • Redman is the Verdine White of the saxophone.

  • how do you make this sound at 03:30 ? its like two instruments...

  • @kudi82 if you use the 1st harmonic of the note your on, w/o fully committing to the higher octave, you can hear both the lower and higher octave at once. you can also do with the 1st and 2 harmonic.

  • @kudi82 His bell microphone is running into a harmonizer effect pedal. Michael Brecker used to do this too.

  • drummer is a total cat

  • haha 2:33 amazing moves

  • Great sound. Deep groove!

  • Slicklick 1:12!!!

  • @Peckahainen 2:29 aswell! Even a better one!

  • great. =)

  • Slick Lick 2:30!!!

  • dude redman is the shit. so was his pops.

  • man. this is fuckin tight.

anyone know where i can find some charts of his?

  • Does anyone know where I could track down the entire show this clip comes from on dvd? I'm in the US btw

  • These are the only clips released from this show. They meant for it to be a whole DVD, but they changed their mind I believe, so this is all they released.

  • How long has this band been around ?

  • Brian, Sam, and Joshua toured from 2002-2005 but I really doubt he does anything related to the original Elastic trio. He did some Elastic stuff with a band callled Soullive. Joshua's new thing is his trio with Reuben ROgers and Gregory Hutchinson, and he also does a thing called a double trio. with two drummers and two bassists. so he added the soulful Brian blade, and Larry Granadier. I saw them over the summer.. it is really incredible. what a sound.

  • amazing

  • Check that SICK resolution around 3:55

  • I, too, would like to know what Korg he's playing on.

Can anybody tell us which Korg that is?

  • can anyone tell me what a korg is? lol, sorry completely ignorant over here.

  • ... you couldn't just look it up?

  • no im lazy.

  • Isn't it harder to say "can anyone tell me what a korg is? lol, sorry completely ignorant over here." than it is to go to google and type in "Korg?" Seems like you used MORE energy to me...

  • a harvard man!

  • what is the Korg Sam is playing on???

  • OMG This is amazing!!!!!

  • brian is my homeboy been knowing him since we were kids

  • this is amazing !!!! an orgasm !!!!

  • carpe diem

  • Nice Veri-tone in the last few chorus'

  • I think he's using a Whammy pedal in this, or it could have been a DP4 or an Eventide H3000. Those are what he's been known to use anyway.

  • altissimo can be helped with a reed. I play lavoz medium and altissimo is much easier with a new harder reed than one that's been broken in and softened.

but i agree it is mainly about air control, diaphragm etc

  • I'm stuck in a hotel room for christmas and these tunes really make it worth it!

  • What is Sam using for his bass sound?

    love it

  • 3:45 HOLY SHIT!

  • Yeah....

2:34 when Josh and Brian find the beat together... The force of Brians crash actually moves Redmans feet off the ground.. Haha, I dig that whole album.

  • Or he just wanted to play on the up-beat....

  • Whatever... They got a chemistry. I fell a strong force when they play together.

  • Ha, I noticed that too.

  • I got the Elastic album when I was about 7 years old and I still love that same tune. This song made it a masterpiece

  • Man that kick drum sounds so nice.

  • He makes that 18" sound like a 24"... so full

  • 16" =)

  • yeah. Gretsch makes the best bassdrums in the world in my opinion. i got an 20" bass USA custom and i dont need it bigger or smaller than that to play all kindes af styles!

  • same with mee but i have a 20" ymaha maple custom...;)

  • yamaha maple custom makes some really good bass drums as vel, but if u get the chance of hearing an gretsch USA bassdrum 7 ply shell with silver sealer i bet you fall in love with it!!

  • are u sure??? cuz i decided to buy me a 2. kit and i actually wanted to buy an other yamaha maple custom but this time with an 18" BD...?

but if you say i would be even more happy with the gretch sound i should try that! could you send me a link with the specific kit?

    t'would be great

  • i am sure your will love a USA custom Gretsch 18/16 bass drum!! Better than Yammaha.but i live in Denmark.. so you sould go to your drumstore and ask if you can get custom Gretsch drums dellvered to you.

  • Ah man such a good tone! I haven't heard of this guy before, but hes well good

  • Elastic is a milestone in Jazz - Finally Redman found a beautiful voice of his own.

  • two words... Dayna Stephens. ok maybe a couple more. Seamus Blake. Howard Wiley. Check these tenor players out if you get the chance and if you haven't already.

  • the lowest notes are the notes are the hardest notes to play on the sax

  • I don't agree. High notes are much harder

  • try playing the lowest note on the sax very quietly, and notice how hard it is to control it. i agree though, the high notes can be difficult

  • Especially depending on your setup, the lower notes can require a whole lot of proper breath support to master throughout a dynamic range. The highest notes are also hard, and by highest I mean all the way into altissimo way above the range of the sax 'normally'. They need a lot of breath support and throat manipulation, as well as weird fingerings (although secondary to the throat positionings and breath support)

  • Yeah, I just learned about the atissimo notes, they are much harder than the lowest notes. I can barely play a note past high F sharp on the alto saxophone. Are you able to play any of those notes. If you can, give me some tips on playing them.

  • yea get a thicker reed XD ive been playing the sax for bout 3 years and atissimo notes arent really that hard. and dont forget slap tongue they own =-)

  • I use a size 3 and 1/2 reed

  • practice ovetones - they really help with altissimo.

Also if you acn get your hands on "top tones for saxophone" thats a really helpful book.

    good luck!

  • Offering advice to Joshua? or another poster? The latter I hope lol......

  • hahah that was definately a reply to someones post, no fear about that!

  • YAH JOSHUA ! Burnin'

  • redman kinda looks like a-rod, lol.

    absolutely tight groove.

  • look at those funny faces brian makes at the beginnig of the song! they're hilarious!

  • Redman is amazing

  • brian kinda looks like obama..

  • haha, yer jus' sayin' that because he's black, lol.

  • I just love Brian!! He´s the man!

  • so ya. he's uhhh... he's pretty good. he's pretty DAMN good. shit, Redman is the man!

  • excelent, i think no buddie like you

  • He uses a rubber Otto link. And its not a growl, hes using an effect pedal....i hope :s

  • what kind of sax is that?redmans a god

  • Selmer Super Balanced relacquered.

  • Why would anyone want to use a relacquered horn? That doesn't look relacquered. They were also called Super Action, not Super Balanced. The Balanced Action was in production from 1936 - 1947. The Super Action was the next model after that; it's production year were from 1948 - 1953.

  • thats where YOUR WRONG douchebag

  • Oh yeah? Want to prove that to me then?

  • Yes they are you moron. The name "Super Balanced Action" was just a misnomer. You're acting so niggardly; why don't you just grow up and accept the fact that you're wrong?

  • wow this whole argument pisses real musicians off.

  • People like you don't help. That guy seemed to be one of those annoying people that go around pissing everyone off. If it pissed you off, there was no need to continue.

  • as he continues

  • The line after the Super Balanced Action (not the super action, that was in the 80's after the Mark VII) was the Mark VI line. And contrary to popular belief, metal makes ALL the difference when it comes to sound!

  • balanced action

    super balanced action

    mark VI

    mark VII

super action 80 series I and II

    series III

    reference series (36, 54)

  • Totally agree on that. I'm a tenor sax player, have a Mark VI and I've tested other horns with my mouthpiece and, man, there's a noticeable difference on sound (harmonics, tone color, amplitude, resonation, projection, warmth, response, mechanics, sound volume, fingering and key action, and a lot of other characteristics of the Selmer mark VI). It's both a vintage and a excellent machine. Kind of a mix of a Rolls Royce with a Ferrari, if we could use such extrapolation...

  • That was Crazy awesome Redman is a sax god.

  • do u know what type of mouthpiece is he playin' ?

  • redman is one of the best. elastic is sooo good

  • 3:30. what is he doing? some kind of weird growl. anyone know what it's called. some sort of multiphonics.

  • Yeah. That is Altissimo, with a growl, and he is using an Octave pedal to double that one octave lower.

  • That's a tenor, right? And why is Josh so nervous and sweaty?

  • yes thats a tenor, and idk why u think hes nervous, but hes sweaty cuz hes been working hard...the stage is always hot

  • show me the way to the dvd set bro.

oh yeh anyone know a way to find good jazz shows in your area?

  • internet

  • any specific sites? i can never find..

  • from 3:30 on, it sounds like there are two saxes. how is he doing this? whats it called?

  • its called multiphonics but he must have had some kind of digital effects helping out because unless is is the best saxophone player who will ever walk this earth( he damn good but no god like good)

  • effects pedal... i dont care if it isnt... it has to be.... this shit cant be happening in his throat... either way theres effects pedals in front of him

  • someone tell me that the little blade/redman kick at 2:34 is part of the structure of the song, and isn't just a god-like mind connection between those two.

  • it just happens in jazz. i've experienced it myself..

  • thats the best part of this song

  • just a smack on beat 4... they do it on the record when it changes grooves and keys like that

  • where can i buy this...

  • i think blade has a wierd soul..

  • blade is the man

  • Yeah.

  • i want it

  • He can IMPROVISE brilliant

    He can SWING brilliant

  • this isn't swing...but yes redman can do it all

  • In this context the word swing refers to the type of groove ,the syncopation.Jazz , Jazz Funk ,Rock n Roll ,Reggae ,Blues even Irish Jigs can swing !! As in ,"It don't mean a thing if it aint got that swing !"

    It's not a style of music it's a way of playing .

  • Marvellous, I wonder who leads , the organ with new chords or redman with a new chord soliciting phrase, probably both.

  • such artistry in on the spot creating, marvellous.!!

  • Bob Mintzer Etudes (check it out guys) that's where all of these come from.

  • awesome....is the sax player doing sqats or something?

  • great clip!

  • Josh Redman is definitely my favorite jazz player around right now. Makes me want to practice.

He's using a harmonizer pedal in the end right? No one plays multiphonics that clean.

  • yeah, its a Bass Doubler effect.

  • GOT-DAMN redman bblade crrraaaaaaazzy.

  • joshua redman is ridiculous

  • brian blade cinematic funkyjazz cotton drummer

  • B BLADE IN DA HOUSE!

  • Where are these from? I'd totally buy this video.

  • these videos were released on the old wbjazz website when Joshua Redman's "Elastic" album came out. they were never officially released beyond these small clips.

  • i like brian blade
