As originally conceived, it was titled, "Mary Tyler Moore Explains the History of the World". When CBS "tested" the original incarnation of the special on "focus groups" before it aired, they discovered those people were bewildered and confused over what they saw. The network insisted Mary and her production company DO something about it. Reluctantly {"the kitten caved (in)"}, she taped new "linking" segments, showing herself in bed, obviously dreaming the entire special...and a title change,
@KhenpoDarma My Dad is a huge MTM fan, so of course we had to watch this when it was originally aired. I remember many reviews in the press called it "Mary's Incredible Nightmare" and Dad would yell to back to them (even a newspaper page!) "They just didn't *get* it!!" LOL
Mary devoted an entire chapter of her 1995 autobiography "After All" to this special. She said it was ahead of its time and if aired today, would be considered a brilliant masterpiece. It was never rerun and the chances of a DVD release are extremely slim!
OK. Now I know I'm not nuts. I had just moved to Atlanta when I saw this on TV. Nobody to tell about it. After a while I wondered if I'd dreamed this bizarre special. One of the campiest things I've ever seen. Now with YouTube and a few other sites, I know I didn't dream it. Wonder if the show's available on DVD. Doubt it.
I knew this existed!!! I thought I had imagined it, at one point.

Believe it or not, my Dad made this show!
He narrates it too.
This kind of stuff must run in the family. :)

That's funny, Marnie!
You should have been there when our family had to read through all the mail!
One person wrote just to swear...another actually dedicated a temple to the "Green Mary Tyler Moore." That must have been a little scary!
