The best thing about these was the channell rejection (lack of bleed over) compared with most other CBs of the same era, the newer 3 crystal version was the better of the 2 versions, I had a superstar 360 which was the same thing, with 5 x bands of 40 channels or was it 6 can't quite remember now, modded by a mate of mine handle Helicopter Eric from around the keighley
These radios weren't really that special at anything apart from the good audio quality on receive and transmit. On SSB the receiver performance is compromised because the SSB filter is twice as wide as it should be. This degrades signal to noise and selectivity. It's this wide because it has to also pass AM signals through the same filter. This is partly why these radios sound so good on SSB. Especially if you get two of them talking to each other. It's not really a DX radio for this reason.
Cobra 148 is AM CB radio design with SSB and CW/FM added as cheaply as possible.
Very over-rated radio, that has gained a cult following for the wrong reasons, its pretty well made, but so were many other radios of the time.. i guess it gave decent performance for it's cost, it was also easy to mod, had a nice big case etc. but did not have the same price tag as a Galaxy pluto or superstar 3900f so it was an affordable ssb rig
This Radio has been sold under other brand names. The cobra 148 gtl DX, and the Superstars--360--3600-3900, and even the Galaxy 2100 had I believe the same board and chasis, only with a frequency counter built in. These were the greatest talking solid state radios ever made. I have had several cb radios dating back to 1975 and the Suoerstar 3900 I bought in 1989 had by far the loudeest puch audio of any radio i ever owned. This radio here is the same radio just with a cobra name
@DoctorOrgasm1 Grants were good ,but I liked the jackson... The grant was nice and heavy.... felt like you were getting a solid radio for your money...It`s hard to decide what`s best ... I know out of 12 148s I have had particular models that are far better than others...I wonder if the grant had different production batches and if some were better then others.... seems to be the case with a lot of mk2 cobras....but I wonder if there was some really good RX on some grants..
load of rubbish

Shouldn't have your amplifier so close to the radio, it'll cause rf feedback.
