Vincent & the Doctor - let's go to visit Van Gough (for no reason). Let's cry about his destiny. Let's run away from a giant cgi chicken. Now let's change history by showing Van Gough the future with the use of a crappy song & slow motion. Luckily for some reason showing him the future didn't change history, he remained a sad, lonely git. The whole thing is sprinkled with shallow emotions. It's not genuine or poignant at all. And the Doctor's actions contradict what he said in Beast Bellow.
I agree with Vincent and The Doctor but I think are other stories that maybe should've made the list. The Aztecs? A story based around Barbara) believing she can change history for the better and not understanding the implications. The Talons of Weng-Chiang portrays the victorian era excellently with the atmospheric, grisly elements of victorian london. Also a worthy mention Remembrance of the Daleks, The Curse of Fenric and The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances.
I totally have to agree with you Vincent and the Doctor is without a doubt the BEST historical episode, so emotional and truthful, maybe even my favourite Doctor Who episode!!!!
"Every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don't always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don't necessarily spoil the good things or make them unimportant." Awesome episode!!!
#5 the unquiet death the dialogue between rose and gwenith, just looking closely gwenith looks like gwen cooper from torchwood i could be wrong but they look so alike could it be that she worked on dr who as well
They are the same actor. In (new) series 4 (possibly The Stolen Earth) Gwen is asked if she comes from an old Welsh family when the Doctor and Rose notice the resemblance through the subwave network connection to Torchwood.
I loved when the curator told Vincent that Vincent van Gogh was the greatest painter ever, really heart warming, although it doesnt really make sense that he still would have killed himself.
You are so right about Vincent and the Doctor. I'd say that is one of the best DW episodes of all time, not just the best historical story. Everything about it is just so captivating. You can't help but feel invested in what is going on.
I liked that the classic series had non-alien-related episodes from time-to-time. The new series can't seem to change things up a bit by avoiding using aliens IN EVERY EPISODE.
@cmdrkoenig67 The reason there are aliens (besides the doctor) in every single episodes is because stories lacking sci-fi elements didn't do that well and weren't that popular when Doctor Who originally tried it out. It's also not fair to blame the new series Doctor Who considering the last time there was a story with no aliens (besides the doctor) was 1982's Black Orchid and before that 1966's The Highlanders.
@mitmfan I am aware of the reasons for the lack of true historical stories (without aliens), but I still think it would be a refreshing change (if done right).
Shame that all the people on youtube who show Vincent and the Dr in whatever form have to alter it so you can't actually watch the ending without added background music/stupid affects.
Almost a brilliant list, I would have taken out "The Time Warrior" and replace it with "The Aztecs"... but "Vincent and the Doctor" was absolutely brilliant and well deserves the #1 position... perhaps one of the best Doctor Who stories ever!
Well as an artist myself I grew up knowing about Vincent Van Gogh and his work inspired me and reading about his works in my art history class gave me a greater understanding to where his work fitted in to the time he was a live. :D It's true that he did have a great impact on the Art World.
it's nice to see a Matt Smith episode on here. even better on the top. if people could stop going on about how he's not David Tennant, that would be wonderful!!!
Vincent and the Doctor is an amazin episode. they didnt turn vincent into some sort of carefree superman hero. he was just a normal guy trying to fit in. i loved the way they didnt shy away from the darkness in his charecter. oh and i loved Matt in this episode hes a briliant doctor x x
I think The Aztecs should be on this list: when Barbara is warned about attempting to change history is one of the best moments in Doctor Who--well acted, well directed, and w/beautiful sets, costumes, and an intense villain.
FUN FACT: There has not been a purely historical episode (i.e. featuring nothing sci-fi other than the doctor himself and the TARDIS) since the 1970s.
@TheWhovians I guess that depends on your definition of "historical". Black Orchid does have scenes set in the past but it is not based on a historical event , so it is possible to not consider it historical.
My definition of historical is being set in a historical event, like The Romans, The Crusade. There are also episodes like An Unearthly Child, Planet of Giants, The Black Orchid which don't have sci-fi elements but aren't based on a historical event, so I consider it neither
the only downside about the unquiet dead is the fact that someware in the middle you can see a light swich witch i am shure they did not have back then. good choices though
I love your choices, though. I love Fires and Pompeii and the Time Warrior as well. It's difficult to narrow the episodes down with almost 50 years of material. There's so many goodies.
I normally shy away from dw reviews because sometimes they seem a little self-important. And lists are just normally the "eps" with no explaination. But this a masterful job - you've made a subscriber out of me (a very difficult task). Great Video. P.S. am a little sci-fi dim but that is hitchhikers theme, yes?
Vincent t and the Doctor is my 6th in my top ten preceded by Pyramids of Mars, The Caves of Androzani, The War Games, Arc of Infinity( most people generally hate this story, and the best doctor who story ever Evil Of The Daleks I have the novelization by Jon Peel its awesome i reccomend cheking it out.
I would put "The Talons of Weng Chiang" in place of "The Time Warrior" and "Human Nature/Family of Blood" in place of "The Unquiet Dead", but that's nitpicky. Good review.
@adamboyz222 That sounds like a remake of "Journey of the Sorcerer" by the American rock band, The Eagles. It was used in the BBC realization of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" thirty years ago and even in the movie, I think.
i agree with the top one but there are two more episodes i would add well 3 if u add the two parts empty child and the doctor dances also 2nd on my list would be girl in the fire place but Vincent and the doctor would be first on my list to :) anyway thanx again for an amazing video
GREAT END to historical week!!! brilliant! altough im surprised you didnt have talons anywhere in the list lol but great! and great choice for number 1
The Fires of Pompeii really interested me, because I have a deep interest in volcanoes and Romans. I thought it was a fantastic episode, but Vincent and the Doctor is also superb. I did notice that the BBC announcer advised people to contact the BBC if Vincent and the Doctor upset them with the topics involved. Just think about that...
@hpathbp25 I loved The Girl In the Fireplace, too. It wasn't technically in the past though, or at least not for the entire episode. Empty Child was also a favorite of mine, but didn't focus much on history. :)
