  • Vincent & the Doctor - let's go to visit Van Gough (for no reason). Let's cry about his destiny. Let's run away from a giant cgi chicken. Now let's change history by showing Van Gough the future with the use of a crappy song & slow motion. Luckily for some reason showing him the future didn't change history, he remained a sad, lonely git. The whole thing is sprinkled with shallow emotions. It's not genuine or poignant at all. And the Doctor's actions contradict what he said in Beast Bellow.

  • My favorite DW historicals:

    1. Pyramids of Mars

    2. Human Nature/The Family of Blood

    3. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances

    4. The Talons of Weng Chiang

    5. The Curse of Fenric

  • wait....THAT WAS BILL NYE!? OH MY GOODNESS!!! CROSSOVER TIME!!!!

  • Okay, the fact that Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy music was the intro makes this even better... asdfhjk

  • the Unerthly Child IS history

  • I personally would put the Romans in here, but I agree with all your choices. Vincent and the Doctor is amazing. :)

  • Aztects should be on your list

But the best historical story is Talons of Weng Chaing

Pompei was terrible because it had donna in it.

  • I agree with Vincent and The Doctor but I think are other stories that maybe should've made the list. The Aztecs? A story based around Barbara) believing she can change history for the better and not understanding the implications. The Talons of Weng-Chiang portrays the victorian era excellently with the atmospheric, grisly elements of victorian london. Also a worthy mention Remembrance of the Daleks, The Curse of Fenric and The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances.

  • I totally have to agree with you Vincent and the Doctor is without a doubt the BEST historical episode, so emotional and truthful, maybe even my favourite Doctor Who episode!!!!

  • hooray for hitchhikers theme!!! great list!

  • what about the highlander

  • I agree, no Delboys in Pompei.

  • "Every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don't always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don't necessarily spoil the good things or make them unimportant." Awesome episode!!!

  • "Good times, good times" You weren't around 63 XD

  • #5 the unquiet death the dialogue between rose and gwenith, just looking closely gwenith looks like gwen cooper from torchwood i could be wrong but they look so alike could it be that she worked on dr who as well

  • @paquitoju

They are the same actor. In (new) series 4 (possibly The Stolen Earth) Gwen is asked if she comes from an old Welsh family when the Doctor and Rose notice the resemblance through the subwave network connection to Torchwood.

  • I loved when the curator told Vincent that Vincent van Gogh was the greatest painter ever, really heart warming, although it doesnt really make sense that he still would have killed himself.

  • @colinmcom14 I get the feeling that it was because of his visions of the TARDIS exploding that drove him insane again. Much more than before.

  • @Squiglypig I don't think it's that complicated, I mean Doctor Who has to stay true to history, so uh sorry about that Vincent, but.....

  • Shame series 6 has had no real historical as eps 1&2 were so concentrated on the silence they never seemed to explore the context. Series 7 though :D

  • You are so right about Vincent and the Doctor. I'd say that is one of the best DW episodes of all time, not just the best historical story. Everything about it is just so captivating. You can't help but feel invested in what is going on.

  • I liked that the classic series had non-alien-related episodes from time-to-time. The new series can't seem to change things up a bit by avoiding using aliens IN EVERY EPISODE.

    Arrgh.

  • @cmdrkoenig67 Time Lords are aliens. ergo every episode features at least 1 alien.

  • @Vip3rAce Well duh, I meant besides the Doctor.

  • @cmdrkoenig67 The reason there are aliens (besides the doctor) in every single episodes is because stories lacking sci-fi elements didn't do that well and weren't that popular when Doctor Who originally tried it out. It's also not fair to blame the new series Doctor Who considering the last time there was a story with no aliens (besides the doctor) was 1982's Black Orchid and before that 1966's The Highlanders.

  • @mitmfan I am aware of the reasons for the lack of true historical stories (without aliens), but I still think it would be a refreshing change (if done right).

  • @mitmfan What about Curse of Fenric?

  • Shame that all the people on youtube who show Vincent and the Dr in whatever form have to alter it so you can't actually watch the ending without added background music/stupid affects.

  • Almost a brilliant list, I would have taken out "The Time Warrior" and replace it with "The Aztecs"... but "Vincent and the Doctor" was absolutely brilliant and well deserves the #1 position... perhaps one of the best Doctor Who stories ever!

  • HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY THEME!!

  • Great list! Vincent and the Doctor is a terrific episode. It's one of my all time favourites. Everytime I see I cry ;)

  • I loved the Vincent episode, but I wish he only had one ear.

  • My Top 5 so far (since 2010)

    5 The Shakespeare Code

4 Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead

    3 Fires of Pompeii

    2 The Doctors Wife

    1 Vincent and the Doctor

    :)

    Why Vincent and the Doctor?

Well as an artist myself I grew up knowing about Vincent Van Gogh and his work inspired me and reading about his works in my art history class gave me a greater understanding to where his work fitted in to the time he was a live. :D It's true that he did have a great impact on the Art World.

  • Thankyou for this, it's really made me want to see some of the origional Doctor Who series! Climax of series 6 tomorrow- Can't Wait!! :)

  • it's nice to see a Matt Smith episode on here. even better on the top. if people could stop going on about how he's not David Tennant, that would be wonderful!!!

  • :( Elizabeth Sladen :(

  • Vincent and the Doctor is an amazin episode. they didnt turn vincent into some sort of carefree superman hero. he was just a normal guy trying to fit in. i loved the way they didnt shy away from the darkness in his charecter. oh and i loved Matt in this episode hes a briliant doctor x x

  • what's the music @ 1:10

  • I think The Aztecs should be on this list: when Barbara is warned about attempting to change history is one of the best moments in Doctor Who--well acted, well directed, and w/beautiful sets, costumes, and an intense villain.

  • @GallifreyExile also the doctor gets married

  • FUN FACT: There has not been a purely historical episode (i.e. featuring nothing sci-fi other than the doctor himself and the TARDIS) since the 1970s.

  • @SimonCHulse welll Black Orchid has no sci-fi elements init and that was 1982 soooooo fun fact proved wrong i feel.... :P - Martin

  • @TheWhovians I guess that depends on your definition of "historical". Black Orchid does have scenes set in the past but it is not based on a historical event , so it is possible to not consider it historical.

My definition of historical is being set in a historical event, like The Romans, The Crusade. There are also episodes like An Unearthly Child, Planet of Giants, The Black Orchid which don't have sci-fi elements but aren't based on a historical event, so I consider it neither

  • @SimonCHulse Actually Black orchid had no sci-fi in it. completely historical

  • @SimonCHulse Fun fact, you're wrong. Black Orchid from the early 80's

  • the only downside about the unquiet dead is the fact that someware in the middle you can see a light swich witch i am shure they did not have back then. good choices though

  • i have to agree that Vincent and the doctor is a truly amazing episode love it made me fall in love with Matt a brilliant episode

  • I think out of all of series six the number one stand alone episode I love would be vincent and the doctor.

  • I completely agree. Vincet and the Doctor is an incredible episode.

  • @ScotticusErroticus Only ignorant Nuvians who like to ignore the first 26 years of DW agree with that.

  • you dont have a good voice for this...... :/

  • 1 person is a scwabbling primitive

  • Mine would be:

    5. The Aztecs

    4. Vincent and the Doctor

    3. The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances

    2. The Girl in the Fireplace

    1. An Unearthly Child

I love your choices, though. I love Fires and Pompeii and the Time Warrior as well. It's difficult to narrow the episodes down with almost 50 years of material. There's so many goodies.

  • the hitchhiker's guide to the galexy music?

  • Comment removed

  • my favorite episodes are always the ones from historical moments

  • Can't say I agree with your number one although I don't complain about it, but it would have been nice to at least see Tooth And Claw on the list...

  • I normally shy away from dw reviews because sometimes they seem a little self-important. And lists are just normally the "eps" with no explaination. But this a masterful job - you've made a subscriber out of me (a very difficult task). Great Video. P.S. am a little sci-fi dim but that is hitchhikers theme, yes?

  • @chuggieforever Yes it is =) It's a great song in my opinion. Thanks alot for the sub mate =D

  • who didnt ecspect that to be nuber 1

  • Havent watched the whole thing yet but damn I really liked your intro you did there

  • Vincent t and the Doctor is my 6th in my top ten preceded by Pyramids of Mars, The Caves of Androzani, The War Games, Arc of Infinity( most people generally hate this story, and the best doctor who story ever Evil Of The Daleks I have the novelization by Jon Peel its awesome i reccomend cheking it out.

  • Awesome! Did you unscore the clips?

  • @DoctorWhoCenterFilms Sorry, i'm stupid. What do you mean?

  • Great choice for number 1, thats my personal favourite of Series 5

  • I would put "The Talons of Weng Chiang" in place of "The Time Warrior" and "Human Nature/Family of Blood" in place of "The Unquiet Dead", but that's nitpicky. Good review.

  • great top list

sorry if i go off the topic but what song did you used

  • @adamboyz222 That sounds like a remake of "Journey of the Sorcerer" by the American rock band, The Eagles. It was used in the BBC realization of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" thirty years ago and even in the movie, I think.

  • @adamboyz222 Journey of the Sorcerer. Its the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy Theme

  • @MrTARDISreviews thakys man

  • i agree with the top one but there are two more episodes i would add well 3 if u add the two parts empty child and the doctor dances also 2nd on my list would be girl in the fire place but Vincent and the doctor would be first on my list to :) anyway thanx again for an amazing video

  • Though it has to be said I haven't watched The Time Warrior or the Unearthly Child so I might give them a go :)

  • Human Nature/Family of Blood would be my top :) Followed by Pyramids of Mars, The Unquiet Dead, Tooth and Claw, Fires of Pompeii =D

  • A top five doctor who historical list could easily be all Hartnell stories:

    The Aztecs

    The Romans

    The Crusade

    The Myth Makers

    The Massacre

  • lol I get the theme, the companions are (sort of) hitch-hikers being guided around the galaxy.

  • @Strobertat Thats a clever way to look at it, but i just picked it because it was awesome =D

  • @MrTARDISreviews lol okay =D

  • I love the hitchhikers theme over this. why had i not thought of that before. classic!!

  • Thanks! I totally agree that Vincent and the Doctor was the best! The acting was beautiful !

  • The historical story are very good

  • GREAT END to historical week!!! brilliant! altough im surprised you didnt have talons anywhere in the list lol but great! and great choice for number 1

  • @pelamar121 I'm afraid that i've never seen talons before =\

  • The Fires of Pompeii really interested me, because I have a deep interest in volcanoes and Romans. I thought it was a fantastic episode, but Vincent and the Doctor is also superb. I did notice that the BBC announcer advised people to contact the BBC if Vincent and the Doctor upset them with the topics involved. Just think about that...

  • No Empty Child? No Girl in the Fireplace? Other than that, a very good list and I agree very much with Vincent and the Doctor.

  • @hpathbp25 Those episodes didn't make the most of their historical setting.

  • @MrTARDISreviews then i strongly STRONGLY recommend you do as quick as possible your life depends on it! but no really its a great story

  • @hpathbp25 I loved The Girl In the Fireplace, too. It wasn't technically in the past though, or at least not for the entire episode. Empty Child was also a favorite of mine, but didn't focus much on history. :)
