I hate how people keep on saying that japanese metal sucks... yes, a lot of times when a japanese person sings in english, it's hard to understand because of the accent, but if an english speaker tried to sing in japanese it would sound much the same to them. the word progressive works if he wasn't making reference to the ACTUAL prog metal scene. avant-garde is progressive because it doesn't walk in the footsteps of others. i like avant-garde artists like mike patton and some of the crazy, out there, stuff by john zorn. so this is quite far from that, but still no need to nitpick. Not many people can tell the difference between bounce metal, prog metal, melodic death metal, groove metal, etc... even though it seems so obvious to me.
people have that trouble because there's so much room for crossing over genres, especially in the broader and more adventurous genres such as avant-garde and prog.
there was something on wikipedia which summed up the difference between prog and avant-garde pretty well:
The experimentation of progressive metal lies mostly in playing complex rhythms and song structures with traditional instruments. For avant-garde metal, most of the experimentation is in the use of unusual sounds and instruments.

not to be condescending, but as a citizen of the USA and as someone who watched the disappearance of music as part of the basic educational curriculum, and the inverse correlation between that and the emergence of simplistic break-beat/bass driven with minimal leads as the main popular music. i cant help but blame a lack of education for the reason people dont get it.
i never realised this concept, given i'm a citizen of the UK. i actually went to one of the worst schools for music and wasn't allowed to do it at higher education because they simply didn't offer it, but i did my own work. never the less, what i DID learn was of valuable importance to me because i made the most out of it - a lot of people in my classes when they existed didn't.

I totally agree with you..with one exception - I doubt that Sigh is avant-garde band. Some of their stuff is kinda experimental (thats why they are better than most of black metal bands, they do not afraid to try new things), but not avant-garde. Avant-garde is mainly modern classical music.
Why it should be a contradiction? In more I dont dont about classical musical in ussuall sense. John Cage is modern classical music, but for ussual listener of classical music it doesnt sound classical at all. Switched styles again with their album "Gallows Gallery" and decided to do an all clean album. Not to bad in my opinion, I do prefer their screams still due atmosphere, but this also has a nice touch.

The remastered version is a bit disappointing. The production is improved, but they cut some of the vocals (namely from In a Drowse), and the intro on Confessions to be Buried has been completely removed. The bonus tracks are nothing spectacular. I really enjoyed this album, but the remaster isn't necessary if you already own it.
This song is really cool, the keyboards and accent contribute to the overall jazzy feeling, in a way.

it is black metal...its also experimental on this album, go listen to Inoitrus/Kyrie or Inked In Blood and then report back.
anything off the Album 'Hangmans Hymn' is more black metal, but is still considered 'avant-garde' at the same time, cos of the uniquety

I love this album, it's so different to the usual Sigh sound (although I know they always push it). I do however prefer Hangmans Hymn and how bloody aggressive and insane it is ^^

also Sigh's inspiration actually comes from the 1 of the originators of BM, Venom! Look at how much venom covers they hav done! Sigh is no poser band.. they've been usin keyboards way before most BM bands. 5th. Sigh is Better than Dimmu. 6th. Sigh most black metal albums are Infidel art and scorn defeat. Hail Horror is partly avant-garde.7th Sigh is the best avantgarde band out there.8th English metal is gay(Cradle)..Sigh is not. i could go on... again i say to the uneducated, SIGH IS THA SHIT!

I totally agree with you..with one exception - I doubt that Sigh is avant-garde band. Some of their stuff is kinda experimental (thats why they are better than most of black metal bands, they do not afraid to try new things), but not avant-garde. Avant-garde is mainly modern classical music.

I would just regard them as Experimental Metal. Avant-Garde Black Metal is more like Summoning for example. Anything by John Zorn.

Why it should be a contradiction? In more I dont dont about classical musical in ussuall sense. John Cage is modern classical music, but for ussual listener of classical music it doesnt sound classical at all. Its true that avantgarde is kinda free style, but it should push music somewhere,it should be something new, breaking some barriers in music (for example modern avantgard was when ppl started to make electronic music,thats real avantgarde)in this point of view Sigh is not avantgarde at all

i wasn't refering to sigh as an avantgarde because i discovered them today and i havent heard enough yet..
what i tried to say is that avantgarde cant be a "modern + something that has been done", you have to innovate in harmony melody sound or whatever.
yes and i think John cage was avantgarde not modern classical. classical had a lot of unbreakable rules i think.

How sad, so many idiots out here... 1st of all Sigh is an avant garde Black metal band.. which immediatley suggests that they try different things... 2nd, this album isnt black metal its just damn good classic metal similar to 80's metal. 3rd Sigh doesn't give a fuck wat BM fanboys think. if u all love satan so much go suck his dick. 4th. Switched styles again with their album "Gallows Gallery" and decided to do an all clean album. Not to bad in my opinion, I do prefer their screams still due atmosphere, but this also has a nice touch.

they did that on purpose! they are an experimental band dude! i love it cause the album sounds similar to a king diamond album!(listen to the whole album) Greatest Metal Act out of Japan! also they didnt quit being brutal...d next album is brutal (hangman Hymn)

The remastered version is a bit disappointing. The production is improved, but they cut some of the vocals (namely from In a Drowse), and the intro on Confessions to be Buried has been completely removed. The bonus tracks are nothing spectacular. I really enjoyed this album, but the remaster isn't necessary if you already own it.
