Jeff Watson is a fantastic player, but man if that is not the most boring chord progression he chose to solo over! As the OP said, tasteful nonetheless.
Thank you posting this, I've never seen it before.
Remember when David Allen Coe sang "have you paid your dues? Can you moan the blues and you bend those guitar string"? Listen to the bend he hits when the audio band shifts back and slams down a note. Flawless. Great solo.
You see, guys like Vai and Malsteen make 1,000 notes sound really good, but guys like Watson, Gillis, Schon and Sambora, make 3 notes sound GREAT!!! And yes, Jeff is SERIOUSLY unrated. Awesome video.
he is really good and on the solos he records on studio for actual songs are amazing ... he seem to be 1 of those guitar players that can actaly play wut they they thinks and be original ... but it seams that he is trying too hard on improv ended up sounding repetitive and unoriginal ( but i guess most guitar players really are like that .
P.S: who else thinks he sounds a lot like marty friedman ( or vice versa i donk know who came first) ??
as for the idiots saying his tone sucks: this video is clearly from the early 80s so don't be expecting perfect quality, I'm 100% sure if you were there while he was playing this his tone would sound amazing.
I watched at a backyard party in Fair Oaks, Ca, back in 1978, Jeff wail before the cops showed up because the neighbors complaints! Great than and even better with Night Ranger!!
The bending of the harmonics, the blue notes, the speed (fast but not stupid fast), the note choice (use of scales) , the versatility of the solo... but ya know syn doesnt use any of that
@ RNRDOLL Yeah you're right and I should have been more clear. I didn't mean that his tone was really off, I just meant that I didn't like the tone. I don't know too much about effects with electric guitars because I only have an acoustic, but I just didn't enjoy the sound.
The tone sucks, but the solos are ok...Nothing special about this just bland solos mixed with bad tonality lol When I say "bad tonality" I don't mean good. I really mean BAD :/
@jerk618 His tone is actually really good. I can hear the harmonics and all the little articulations jumping out. BUT, there are a couple things that are giving the perception that it sucks 1. the video is degraded from being so old 2. there's a slight delay effect impeding the dry guitar (lots of 80's guitarists used choruses or delays to 'thicken' up tone..which usually sounds lame..just use an eq!) 3) the drum machine doesn't help either haha.
im not just saying this but i feel like this guy plays with some of the same style that i do. he is definitely better than me. but i can relate to the solo hes playing
Gosh I don't see why people marked this as "Spam". Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I can 100% agree that this mans skills (in terms of fast scales/shredding) surpasses Hendrix's. Either way, both are great. This is an Awesome vid!
Jeff's Great. I listened to his Lone Ranger and Around the Sun solo CDs tonight. It's been a while. Fantastic stuff. I think his playing went through the roof between the early 80s and when these two albums were recorded (early 90s). Not that his playing on the early Night Ranger records is anything to sneeze at, of course.
Certainly the dude has one of the tastiest vibratos of all time. It's like bloody silk. Incredible. Check out 'Morris Minor' or 'Man's Best Friend'.
Doesn't Steve Morris play on that too? Everyone who knows Steve has to meet some high requirements. Or does Steve come and baptiise them into guitar gods?
People always talk about Watson's awesome technique, but I think his slower, melodic stuff is a more appealing part of his style. Check out the intro to "Hearts Away." He sounds like an oboe! Or the middle solo to "Goodbye." That's one I like to show students. Or the outro for "The Color of Your Smile." I'm not discounting the guy's chops, but it's easy to overlook these other aspects.
That was real sweet thanks! You know what psyches me out? The end of Passion Play when Jeff rips out the final shred before the song ends. Know where I'm referring to? Its awesome!
@LPcustom76 - I agree with you. Watson has warmth in his tone and actually relies on his attack and hand technique, as opposed to setting preamp gain and presence on 10 and letting the fizzy distortion paint a make believe picture. Nice to see other guitarists out there 'get it.'
@LPcustom76 yeah he does have clean speed and good techniques, arpeggios arent bad, its jsut kids nowadays think that they are neo shredders if they can sweep little 3 stringers, but yeah i agree he is definatly one of thee most underrated guitarists of the 80's... oh btw my uncle had a chance to play with nightranger believe it or not
@phallictractor i felt there was enough 80's guitarists making a living with arpeggios. take tipton for example, he was fantastic prior to defenders of the faith, his solos were full of emotion and taste. then his fingers came down with a chronic case of diarrhea.

That really was such a controled speed. Very fast but not so fast that you can just run it together and get all crapy with it. Good, clean fun.
