Ronnie Lane was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and died in Colorado U.S.A in 1997. His medical care was funded by Jimmy Page, Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood.
He has always been one of my favourite musicians. He was one of the first people to combine country/rock. There is great feeling and Joy in his songs. RIP Ronnie.
...one of my all time favourite Ronnie Lane songs, this is a great example of what a fine writer he was....the world ain't the same without ya' Ronnie....
God bless you Ron and keep em rockin up there,You were music with a smile and for that i thank you,but you were also the the dogs bollix and i thank you(and the Faces)for making my youth musically fantanstic.
oh to live in the world of 'Slim Chance'. Pure Joy fills every cell listening to these guys lead by the Master of Fun - Ronnie Lane - one of the darlings of Wapping Wharf Launderette
Oh man - I miss Ronnie Lane - I miss real rock musicans 1 April Happy Birthday Plonk
I hope you are at rest under dreaming spires - what a sweet winsome voice this guy had and what a true trobadour - a class act I miss his wit and talent more as music like the rest of the world gets colder and stupider all the time - sigh ... shine on...
it's actually Nigerian musician Biddy Wright who was a contempary of Fela Kuti. He didn't atually play on the record however that was Chrissie Stuart, apart from Gallagher and Llye the other musicians are Billy Livesy(piano) and Bruce Rowlands(drums). There is a live version featuring this band plus "How Come" co-writer Kevin Westlake out there somewhere as well
I used to sing this song when I was in a band about 15 yrs ago and found myself singing it recently, forgot who it was by and went on a frantic search for it, so happy I found it now .
RIP, Ronnie - one of the UK's most important, but sadly underrated, singer-songwriters. Squeeze that box, Bernard! PS: Biddy Wright is the bassist in this clip.
I live in Cleveland, saw Hendricks, Cream, Stones, Velvet Underground and too many more to add. If Ronnie ever gets there, I will go down to that fake ass ripoff joint. Never been there but loved the Small Faces and Ronnie Lane from the 60s and listened to him today in the car. Peace.
rod stewart said that if he ever get to chance to do things again he would've asked faces as his backing band again. in fact, they asked him and even though rod has a good voice ronnie lane is far more talented but unfortunately underappreciated. very gentle of rod to support ronnie though
This little tune has been on my mind all week, very INFECTIOUS! I have to hear it every day. I'd always been a Stones and Faces fan, and now I'm glad I've rediscovered this 'relative' of theirs.
how come I can't stop listening to Ronnie Lane (or Steve Marriott either?) Oh wait... maybe because to me they are absolutely the finest rock musicians ever, hands down, case closed. Only Davies Bros, the Who & Rory Gallagher could ever compete! In my rock world noone had the diversity in style & charm. I miss 'em more & more as the world just grows more & more mad. we could use their cheekiness nowadays. aww Plonk, Marriott & Rory G taken way too soon - how come? sigh.. i miss real rock music.
Ronnie Lane so didn't need to work with Rod! He was a GREAT musician on his own! Simple hooks, lovely melodies & a sweet, wistful voice, so unique with such an understated stage presence. See Ronnie Lane was a REAL musician. I love his stuff. What a sad story the end of his life was. I miss Ronnie Lane's music & it goes without say I miss Marriott.!!! btw what happened to Rod he was pretty good when he started wonder what changed him & Ron Wood too?
Yep, 'tis Benny Gallagher and Graham Lyle. All the mics and the sound of the cymbals suggest to me that this really was played live on this show, back when ol' Baz's show was prime time for all the family, Even on Top of the Pops if a band mimed they didn't bother pretending with instrument mics, etc.
Can you imagine a band now if their agent said "I've got you a slot on telly lads, it's the Basil Brush show..."
ronnie lane quit the faces in 1973 cause he wasnt given much chance to sing. the faces finally disbanded in 1975 when ron wood joined the fucked up stones and kenny jones hooked up with the shitty WHO. ron wood should have known better, when mick taylor quit the stones cause their punks..
Ronnie didnt have the ego to chase stardom. He just wanted to make music and get a living from doing so. Forget Wembley Stadium and all those other overblown gigs - he was happy playing in a tent to a crowd of 200 (and would have done so, in numerous places, if pettifogging local authorities hadnt kept interfering). And Slim Chance shared with McGuinness Flint and Lindisfarne a happy-go-lucky anything-goes attitude to their music that makes all three among my favourite acts of all time.
He also had failing health. He had Multiplesclerosis, which he eventually died from. He didn't get royalties from the Faces until after he died. All his famous friends helped him out with medical bills.
You nailed it right on the head, for all these artists it wasn't about "stardom", it was all about the music and connecting as equal human beings with the audience.
@Krzyszczynski Ronnie never played to 200 in the tent because he was so flippin disorganised! He'd put the flyers out a day before, rather than a week, forgetting that people would make other arrangements. Also, his vehicles weren't roadworthy & didn't have generators. I'm all for freewheeling music, but it bankrupted him. Poor old Plonk was his own worst enemy!
Ronnie had everything. If he'd stuck with it for a couple more years he'd have got some of the royalties due. He chose a different path. He was honest with himself and had no choice but to follow that path. I gave up a well paid Management job, failed on my mortgage payments, and now rent a small holding in the middle of nowhere. Nothing to leave my kids except the memory of a beautiful childhood in the countryside. I've lost a lot but consider myself a lucky man! Thanks,Ronnie for inspiring me
I think Ronnie Lane has a great voice. Being a great singer has less to do with power and range and more to do with style and expressiveness, both of which he had in abundance. He's also a fantastic bass player. As talented as they are, when Marriot and Stewart parted ways with him they were never nearly as good. Humble Pie versus the Small Faces? No contest. Love ya Robbie.
Great to see this rarity. Surprised to see the negative comments about Rod, though. It's obvious why he had the success: great voice, great songs, looked the part. Lane didn't have the voice (Marriott did), nor the looks (shouldn't be an issue but is and always has been).
I disagree, Ronnie had a fine, fragile, knowing voice. It's the difference between James Brown and Smokey Robinson: it's all two sides of the same coin. Steve & Rod were fine, and so damn well was Ronnie. No appollogies!
I like some vocalists who don't have great voices, such as Tommy Bolin or Jimi Hendrix. However, if you don't have the range or the power, you don't have a great voice. That's why Rodgers & Marriott are so special.
I agree. Not many people know. But when Ronnie moved to Trinidad in 1994 and as yet no roalties from the small faces had materialised it was Rod and Jimmy Page who donated money for Rons medical care. RIP Ronnie. Best regards.
How come Rod, Mick, et al? Ronnie was an artist, and all the best fires burn themselves to ash completely. Now the others, well they ain't artists, just interpreters. Ronnie Lane was the goods.
