If you are using beeswax and damar crystals only, which are all natural products there is no risk of it getting too hot. I use a heat gun all the time and in fact this is how I was shown how to do it at an encaustic workshop with a leading encaustic artist. There are some fumes from the crystals when you melt them but the wax doesn't seem to give off too much fumes and again it is all natural and non toxic.
I use a heat gun set at 1000 degrees and I have never had it catch fire. Sometimes I will dodge in with it for a second or two within an inch of the wax to get the wax to melt and flow. But it never smokes or catches fire. Perhaps I'm just lucky!.
