  • I love both versions, why choose one when you can listen to both.

  • All the talk about the Cash cover is a bit annoying... This is a NIN/Reznor song, Cash just made a good cover.

I mean if u wanna talk about the cover go do that on a Cash video... (imo)

  • Hate's a strong word. The Johnny Cash version and the original can co-exist, and both are well made, and anyone who likes more than one music genre can appreciate them both. i think any artist deserves some positive credit to what they've accomplished in a cover

  • Lol yeah, just implying that this version is much better :)

  • I remember...This album is amazing. But there was not all this stuff about this song....

  • Johnny who?

  • @Bostonian91 You're kidding right?

  • "I would keep myself, I would find a way".. I couldn't have wished for a better way to finish the album. The man is a damaged genius.

  • whats wrong with my left earbud listining to this?

  • I think it's awesome that 2 different artists from 2 very different eras in music history can come together and make something great!

  • @Zeloim23 Same...I fucking hate it.

  • @Zeloim23 Why would you hate it? They are both good. Hate IS a strong word.

  • just bought downward spiral with all modern remastered stuff for £7.99 so happy :)

    All hail Trent :)

  • I really need to buy this and Pretty Hate Machine.

  • Fucking. Beautiful.

  • How about everyone just appreciate the song and different opinions? It's an awesome song, so why not? :)

  • Isn't this a cover of that Leona Lewis person?... /trollface

  • @11nephilim you fucker

  • Fuck Johnny Cash!

  • @SolidRaider6 You sure you want me to do that?

  • I heard Johnny's version first so when I heard NIN sing this, I about shit myself in excitement. I like this a lot better though. However, I think it's cool that when Cash covered it, Trent Reznor himself said, "It's Johnny's song now."

  • Don't you just love how idiotic people are? I find it amusing that a song of such high artistic beauty and meaning like this has fans that are so ignorant that we have to argue on every single video because another person covered this song. Like seriously, fuck you guys.

  • The gangsta, The Killa and the Dope Dilla..

  • Leona Lewis needs to be more honest about her crown of shit

  • Love the leona lewis version, nine inch nails version and johnny cash version, am i crazy?

  • @Hyggor16 Not crazy. Bleedin' insane more like!

  • FUCK JOHNNY CASH

  • Still reeling that Leona sang this. I like Cash's version but, to me, this is the best - the original <3

  • leona lewis just sang this on x factor.. sweet jesus.

  • man oh man... this song is only 17 years old.... im getting old...

btw... i am not ignorant in knowing that NIN wrote the song first. I like both versions but i like the original version better...

  • i find that the cash version is abit more on the sad side, whenevr i listen to the cash version its abit more depressing. this one is different, a different feeling to it.

  • JUST SAYING, but I thinkkkk that both artists while singing are singing about different experiences and stuff... so it kind of make each version different... Vastly different.

  • Just shut the hell up and enjoy the music. If you want to bitch and whine, go create a blog somewhere that will get no traffic and fade into obscurity. Like, hopefully all of the complainers will.

  • trent instrumentals with cash vocals would be the best version

  • don't get me wrong, i appreciate that this is the original version of "hurt", but anyone with an ear for musical talent can tell that johnny cash's cover is better. and no, @skwafatch , i'm not a "country music loving nut ball". actually, i don't even like country music in the slightest. johnny cash sings with more emotion and that's what makes his version of the song.

  • @cstone1126

I didn't say every fan is a country loving nut ball, it just so happens that I personally know too many Cash fans that disrespect Nine Inch Nails. My preference in industrial music and my ability to relate with Trent Reznor enables me to feel an equal amount of emotion from both versions. Regardless of which version has "better musical talent" the original will always appeal to me more. So without getting into any debates I can honestly say that both versions are amazing.

  • @cstone1126

Yeah, bro, music is an objective thing, right?

  • @cstone1126 please, its good in its own way, please keep this to yourself, johnny cash is an entirely different artist and has an entirely different artist. quit being silly and acting like you know everything, we dont care about YOUR ear for talent, mostly because it is only one sided. trent has a different audience, cash has a different audience. end of story.

  • Every time I hear this song it gives me chills. This is a great song to hear live.

  • IMO ------

NIN-Reflecting on present life, & future life

    CASH-Reflecting on past life

  • i know this is the original so nobody needs to send me a stupid messege saying "hey this is the original" but johnny cash does this song 110% better

  • @MrHavens23 In your opinion...

  • Comment removed

  • @MrHavens23 I don't think either version is "better" than the other. It may be the same music and lyrics, but they are two completely different songs. You really can't compare them.

  • lololo stop bitching about johnny cash version! every non-sub human can understand this is the real shit and Cash's is just a cover

  • Cash's cover is okay, but he replaces "crown of shit" with "crown of thorns"

    bro, u aint jesus

    stop actin like u jesus

  • @2112Primus Actually, when this song was played for radio, Trent censored it to say that.

  • Dude people are fucking tardos, they know the truth. Trent wrote the song, and johnny redid it, but at a cost, it took his own doing to make his own. Trent had the Original, and the One!

  • What a shitty cover of a Johnny Cash song lol lol lol.

(If you aren't laughing yet, get over yourself. I'm trolling.)

  • 感傷的で、きれいな曲♪

  • is the sound quality off for anyone else, or is my sound card fucked?

  • 1 person should hurt themselves today

  • to the people who don't know who covered who.... HAVE YOU NOT FUCKING HEARD OF GOOGLE?!?!

  • I cherish this song,If you choose to see it in that light. In my darkest hour, this song helped to save my life.I remember playing with my shotgun along this timeframe and I remember feeling grateful that anyone else had felt this way.I am glad that I chose to empathize as apposed to becoming another statistic.Trent has helped to save many lives, none of my dearest friends understood how close that I came.I didn't want help,I wanted a release.

  • I love this song. I also like Johnny Cash's version. This is the song that got my MOM into NIN. I prefer this version, though. You can feel the raw emotion in it...

FTR, while Trent Reznor did write the song, he announced that the song was "no longer his" after hearing Mr. Cash's version.

  • he played this at very end of spiral concert at roseland in nyc, i was there, everyone burning their candles.

  • i want to point out that both cash and reznors hurt song resinates with the demons that dwell in me true there are lyrical changes in cashs version that i dont like at all and know that trent was in his full blown heroin addiction thus producing a song that i will always listen to by either

  • Trent recorded this song on DownwardSpiral after Ian Curtis' lyrics, right?

  • Why the fuck does everyone feel the need to talk about cover versions on the original. It's NIN, deal with it.

  • Trololol

  • So hauntingly beautiful

Johnny Cash's version is really good-but this is kickass

  • Johnny Cash's version is good, but, nothing beats NIN.

  • Whether Trent Reznor or Johnny Cash sang the song, the message is whatever the message is interpreted within no matter who sings it or who listens - perhaps that's why they sing it to their fans and let them own the experience and the message in any way they want to. I suppose if Trent Reznor wanted to truly own the words of the song he wrote, then he wouldn't share it.

  • I remember when NIN came to Springfield MO in the early nineties...like '92 or something at the Shrine Mosque. That was one of the BEST if not THE BEST event that happened here no matter what outrage stirred the religious or conservative groups. My interpretation is that Trent Reznor was not trying to cause an outrage or a mosh-pit-free-for-all...it's his passion to share it out of no concern for whoever was a witness to it.

  • Just to settle the debate, Trent said at Lollapalooza that he "wrote this song and then gave it to a friend." If anyone wants any help with this, look it up!

  • @wsox1705 Seriously, I agree.

  • this song was made by pink floyd .

  • For the people arguing about who covered who, Trent Reznor originally wrote and released the song in 1994. In 2002 Johnny Cash covered the song, but due to few

Cash listeners knowing about Trent's version, many mistook it for being written by Cash

    Happy now?

  • @destroy2020 Too little, too late. Hopefully you enlightened a few sad fucks who would've never heard of this song if it were not for Cash.

If more people did their research, they'd understand that 1994 < 2002, which would make Reznor's version first.

  • @destroy2020 Are ppl still going on about that? When in doubt, research and when you find out the answer, say mentally: oh, so that's it. Easier than filling up a whole youtube comment page in a trivia discussion.

  • @ff7reborn Wow, you need to get your shit straight. This is a Nin Inch original and Jonny Cash did the cover, and he did do a great job of it. Just get your shit right please- it disrespect the original artist.

  • @ff7reborn NIN: Hurt, Album: the Downward Spiral, 1994., i bought this cd in 1995 and its the last song on it.

Cash: Hurt (NIN cover), Album: American IV, 2002, was released as a single in 2003, and he died the same year. Trent commented on it: Wow, I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore… Get YOUR shit straight dude.

  • @ff7reborn nice story, whats your source? and who said johnny stole it. he liked the song and covered it. and its not the first time he covered some song. and by the way cash was a big supporter of metal music

  • @MajkeTiTvoje Trent is my source. But yeah, my bad Johnny Cash is a huge fan of Black Sabbath, how could I forget.

  • @ff7reborn Is that so? I have a secret to tell you, Cash told me that its actually a song given to him by Roger Waters who stole it from Bjork. So he gave it to Trent so that Icelanders wont get mad at him.

  • @ff7reborn Incorrect.

  • @ff7reborn ya"ll r nutz i wrote this song w trent in 1989 in my kitchen on e116th st

  • @ff7reborn 1994 < 2002

The Downward Spiral was released in 1994, American IV: The Man Comes Around was released in 2002.

    Reznor's version is the original.

Other bands who covered this song (in no specified order):

Tori Amos, Matthew Good, Peter Murphy, Breaking Benjamin, Underoath, Aaron Lewis, and Sevendust.

    Truth bites, don't it?

  • @maxscar18 Wow, BRO, maybe you could use your copmuter for something besides porn and youtube you would know how to do some reasearch and find out the composer, but your hust a moron. Trent Reznor wrote it. Look it up, dumbass.

  • dont wanna start a flame war but way better then johnny cash's version

  • Oh my god, there's not a thousand comments from Johnny Cash fans saying that the real version is crap. I'm cool with Johnny but a lot of his fans are religious country music loving nut balls that thoroughly enjoy dissing this song if not all of Trent Reznor's music. Beautiful track.. Thanks for sharing.

  • @Skwafatch amen to that. i love nine inch nails, but when it comes to hurt and both verisons i cant decide which i like better because of the different elements put into each version. seriously, if two people told me i had to pick one version of the song and i could never listen to the other version, id shoot them both dead. XD

  • @Islewthecyclopse

Haha, no doubt. I personally think Johnny's version was better instrumentally but Trent's version had more meaning and emotion. It all comes down to personal opinion eh.

  • @Skwafatch more emotion in trent's voice

  • @Skwafatch as if Reznor isn't a devil worshiping psychotic doper nut job that thoroughly enjoys making the most satanic depressive noice possibly imagined!

  • @leonakita lo0l, he isnt, he's a roid raging catholic who persues the american dream of making mad cash by doing something no one else can, also, his label owns the likes of Pink, Lady GaGa, Jay-Z, 50-cent, Riahnna, etc.

  • @leonakita Is that a problem?

  • @Skwafatch Haha, I was just thinking the same thing. Those people forget that the song surely meant something to Johnny Cash for him to do a cover of it himself. Why can't they show some similar form of respect by shutting the fuck up?
