not a fan of the rotary, yes they make good power and are really quite clever, but id rather have a BP motor, everyone knows the miata is 50:50 weight distribution, shoving a 13b in means you cock that up, i know you can remove some weight or add counter weight but mazda spent alot of time and effort trying to make it perfect, the miata was never about all out power.....just beautiful balance, imo one of the best handling cars around, so why change it :)

Does this miata need a rear spoiler? Probably. Does it need some sort of body kit? Probably. But does it need a spoiler the size of a street lane, orange wheels, chrome tail lights and a body kit so extreme you can hardly tell it's a miata? Probably not.

I'm also puzzled why there are not more Rotaries in a Miata. We are putting a 13B in our Miata keeping in Naturally Aspirated. Should be ready in about 3 months. It will be Semi-Peripheral Ported. Target is 250~280 WHP. This is one of the few vids showing a Rotary Miata in action.
They dnt want ppl to get cheap miatas, they want to sell expensive rx8's. also, the miata is meant to be a cruiser, not a fuel hungry race car. If they made limited rotary versions, not too many people would want the 8, even if it is a 4 seater, cuz they could've gotten a mazda3

the difference in raw torque at low rpms makes the BMW the much better street car. On a race track its a different story
A rotory engine doesnt start delivering good strong power till after 5000 rpm. below that its slow as balls. Turbo charging solves this problem but brings another set of problems
@stustockwell The solution is to turbo them or to add more rotors. Mazda should have made a road going version of their 4 rotor engine. and more 3 rotors. But the cost would have priced them out of the market
4-rotors are too heavy for most cars and burn crankcase oil even faster. What Mazda should do is make a naturally-aspirated 3-rotor version of the 16X, but I have a feeling they're just going to turbocharge it again. Turbo rotaries are cool, but the average owner is too careless to maintain them properly.
What I really don't get is why Mazda never bothered to make a naturally-aspirated 3-rotor. Maybe the intake pulse timing is all out of whack with 3 rotors.

There's a reason why it's practically impossible to find an FD that hasn't been rebuilt within 80k miles, while non-turbo FCs routinely clock 150k and up before requiring one.
@787Bisurdaddy my bad thought the 13b was a 3 rotor but its 2 and the 3 is the 20b which i think without a turbo theres not enough backpressure so you prob need the vacuum from a turbo or smaller rotor 3 rotor
Pressure in a fluid system is a byproduct of resistance to flow. The less "backpressure" in an exhaust, the more flow there is, and the more power the engine will make. This is why a car with no exhaust at all (no "backpressure") makes the most power.
If the piping is too big, the exhaust gas loses velocity and dead spots occur, making it harder for the incoming exhaust to get through the exhaust. But the issue is too much capacity, not too little pressure.

In the hands of a skilled driver a ferrari depending on what model lets say a 575M challenge stradale will destroy a Spec Miata at pretty much any track except for maybe auto X. Road america the ferrari would LEAVE it on the corner exits and down the straight aways and a 575M isnt a shitty handling car so it would keep up with it in the corners.
Spec Miatas are basically stock miatas with better tires. thats about it. and some suspension mods.

Mazda already has a turbo version of the 1.8L Miata engine.
Search 2004-2005 Mazdaspeed Miata.
Mazda also used a similar engine in the 2002 - 2003 Mazdaspeed Protege
They now have the 2.3L Direct Injection Turbocharged 4cyl used in the Mazdaspeed 3 and in the CX-7 SUV.
What I would love to see is that 2.3DISI Turbo in a Miata... that would be nice.

@stustockwell for race cars yes for street cars not so much. Rotories come with alot of problems that make it a less than adequate engine for a road car
Go drive a Mazda RX8 then go drive a BMW M3
the difference in raw torque at low rpms makes the BMW the much better street car. On a race track its a different story
A rotory engine doesnt start delivering good strong power till after 5000 rpm. below that its slow as balls. Turbo charging solves this problem but brings another set of problems

@stustockwell The solution is to turbo them or to add more rotors. Mazda should have made a road going version of their 4 rotor engine. and more 3 rotors. But the cost would have priced them out of the market

4-rotors are too heavy for most cars and burn crankcase oil even faster. What Mazda should do is make a naturally-aspirated 3-rotor version of the 16X, but I have a feeling they're just going to turbocharge it again. Turbo rotaries are cool, but the average owner is too careless to maintain them properly.
What I really don't get is why Mazda never bothered to make a naturally-aspirated 3-rotor. Maybe the intake pulse timing is all out of whack with 3 rotors.

@787Bisurdaddy are you retarted? the rx7 fcs3 had the option of na 13b and so did the fd and so does the rx8 in fact the rx8 isnt even available with a turbo and stock turbo is at a low boost there is no maintaining to be done up to like 100,000miles because the engine broke in with the pressure from the first start unless you change it there shouldnt be maintenece

Am I "retarted"? No, I don't think so. I've owned turbo and non-turbo RX-7s, and spent a lot of time in the RX-8. I know all about which cars came with and without turbos.
There's a reason why it's practically impossible to find an FD that hasn't been rebuilt within 80k miles, while non-turbo FCs routinely clock 150k and up before requiring one.

@787Bisurdaddy my bad thought the 13b was a 3 rotor but its 2 and the 3 is the 20b which i think without a turbo theres not enough backpressure so you prob need the vacuum from a turbo or smaller rotor 3 rotor

Pressure in a fluid system is a byproduct of resistance to flow. The less "backpressure" in an exhaust, the more flow there is, and the more power the engine will make. This is why a car with no exhaust at all (no "backpressure") makes the most power.
If the piping is too big, the exhaust gas loses velocity and dead spots occur, making it harder for the incoming exhaust to get through the exhaust. But the issue is too much capacity, not too little pressure.

In the hands of a skilled driver a ferrari depending on what model lets say a 575M challenge stradale will destroy a Spec Miata at pretty much any track except for maybe auto X. Road america the ferrari would LEAVE it on the corner exits and down the straight aways and a 575M isnt a shitty handling car so it would keep up with it in the corners.
Spec Miatas are basically stock miatas with better tires. thats about it. and some suspension mods.

Its really presumptuous to put a Miata in the same class as these vehicles. A SM is no where near the level of these cars.
There is a reason why ferraris and porsches cost 200,000.00 and a Miata only costs 17,000 new
Miatas are great cars well built and well engineered but they arent the be all and end all
