If you ever get a chance to travel further up the 400 North to Sudbury may I suggest filming a segment through Parry Sound. The blasted rock along the highway will remind you of I-15 through the Virgin River Gorge in AZ
@JohnRhysMusician: Hopefully, one of these days. By the way, I should have taken down this video, as I uploaded the edited version, not too long ago. Looks much cleaner than this version. Thanks for watching!
As an interesting note, the western section of the Gardiner Expressway from the 427 to the Humber River, roughly 0:40 to 1:37 on your video, was actually part of the QEW until April 1, 1997.
I hope Toronto thinks twice about tearing down the Gardiner. Some cities that have removed heavily traveled expressways had subsequent regrets about lowering vehicle capacity. They need to be prepared for the increased strain on existing surface streets and public transit systems. For what it's worth, it would be better to replace the Gardiner with a double-deck 10 lane toll road.
I hope you got a chance to take the other fork in the road and drive the stretch of Lakeshore Boulevard that the Gardiner Stub used to be over. Several of the old supports for the stub have been left in place as "urban artwork". It's really cool to see these big pillars next to the roadway, no longer supporting anything...
its kinda sad how much toronto blows most its american counterparts away - it seems to compare favorably with chicago which has double the metro population...
then again, it is canada's biggest city; it should be impressive.
The Census Metropolitan Area for Toronto (Which reluctantly includes Hamilton due to the urban connection, is just over six million as of September 2009, meaning that the GTA+Hamilton is actually closer to two thirds the size of Chicago at roughly nine million people, and the inner Golden Horseshoe which is comprised of almost all commuter towns and cities is almost eight million (although it also includes Kitchener-Waterloo, which don't have a large commuting tie to Toronto.)
The Golden Horseshoe is at 8,400,000 as of June 2010 according to the wikipedia, with Mississauga being it's fastest growing constituent. Mississauga is interesting in that the city is relatively debt free, and under 50% of the residents have English as a first language (Chinese being a big player in the city.)
It's sad to hear the Gardiner Expwy. east of Don Valley Pkwy was demolished. I do have to wonder if the dept of transportation(or whatever gov't agency is in charge of expressways in the Toronto area) didn't do enough maintenance on the Gardiner over time, after finding an article on this expressway on another site. Maybe a Torontian(sp?) could shine some light on why that portion was demolished.
Loved seeing that orange convertible from 2:43 to 3:05, wish I knew what kind of car that was....
The section east of the DVP was a stub that didn't actually lead to anywhere. It was *supposed* to lead to the Scarborough Expressway, but that project was cancelled in the anti-car mania that has gripped Toronto in the time since the Gardiner was built. Destroying the Gardiner stub was seen as being a commitment that there would never again be a push to build the Scarborough Expressway.
It was demolished because almost all of the traffic routes off onto the Don Valley Parkway, and anyone not wishing to take the DVP has a close parralel alternative to which it now links, there are also negotiations underway to sink portions of the Gardiner in an effort to widen it throughout the downtown area, it passes to near to some buildings to allow for surface or elevated widening.
The current local gov't in Toronto is very anti-car. Not only are they demolishing portions of the Gardiner Expy, but they have realigned many surface routes by reducing car lanes and adding bike lanes that no one uses (which has made congestion worse!!). They've also imposed a $60 personal vehicle tax on residents with cars on top of the $75 provincial fee. Thank god David Miller has decided not to run for mayor again!!
This is just the first of a good dozen videos that I'll have around the greater Toronto area...expect pretty much every 400-series freeway within the region to be uploaded in the coming months ahead. :-)
That is my Favorite Canadian Hwy ive ever been on, and ive been on alot of Canadian highways , i loved how it cut through the Harbor front Canadian , it reminded me of the FDR in Manhattan , and how it rides the East Side next to all the buildings.
Yeah, I drove it several times. I'm so glad I recorded it in HD, especially since it'll probably be torn down in the coming years. I'm all for it, as it'll be nice to have downtown Toronto reconnected with its waterfront, but man, the views from the elevated portion of the Gardiner are amazing!
2:01 ok now this really pisses me off the white van is tailgating the mini van in the SLOW lane than cuts you and the mini van off, WTF? the mini van is in the slow lane you wan't is he thinking?
Haha, I definitely got some stares and excited looks. Although I saw several other California plates while I was in town, as well as plates from all over the U.S. However, it's in Quebec where I seem to get the biggest surprised looks (and nope, I haven't seen any California plates here).
Awesome vid brent , thanks for this one .. amazing toronto is . lots of building going on in this vid with the skyscrapers.. your best hd video to date

The Gardiner is in bad shape, but it's a great freeway. You won't find a better view of the city anywhere else.

Oh, and the song is by Kaskade - "Sometimes" (Radio Edit). I list the song artist and title at the end of every video.
