@coatduck you probably got 40 dollars worth of magnetic wire on this particular mot, but ifyou got the money to spend it sure beats the labor, but anyways can beat the price of this wire

Just hacked an old discarded transformer last night like you did .I was lucky it was very clean, just had to clean the adhesive residue after removing the outside covering tape.. I also hacked a ballast but the wire is too fine it breaks during unwinding due to the paint like the coil in your video. I was looking for a good primary for Tesla Coil.
@TommyDeBest You might try using a die grinder if you have access to an air compressor. They have a much thinner disc than a grinder and will usually go through material faster. Just a thought.
Its cheaper then buying fresh, and always a good idea to recycle, but how is the insulation doing on those? Chances are there might be some more repairs you have to do to re-apply insulation on old magnet wire.
good job!, a lotta my scrap mot's are dunked in epoxy like that too, long as the wire enamel dosn't break down when I'm unwinding it I'll use it for a coil!.
when I used to scrap mot's for copper I used to hold them in my hand and knock the end plate off, that was until a spark jumped from the secondary coil into my thumb!.
knocking that plate off must induce a HV spike in the secondary, sorta like an ignition coil!. play safe!
I'd say it was breaking the magnetic field. the iron cores must have a laitent magnetic field that collapses like that of a magneto or small engine coil when the magnet in the flywheel passes by.
not lethal, but getting a jolt and dropping a MOT on your foot at the same time isn't fun :(
Great job. I have been doing this with a whole stack of transformers I have. There's a lot more wire in those things than you would expect. I can't get a spool of magnet wire that long at my local radioshack. They only carry those little tiny spools.
Use a piece of nylon and a good glove to straighten the wire and to get rid of most of the epoxy on the wire; just some meters at a time, because it will curl and knit..
1 secundairy gave me enough wire to wind a 125mm diam. tube for about 80cm.. but i stayed within the 1:5 ratio for this is a little coil.
If you have 2 identical MOT's, you can use the primaries for a 1:1 safety transformer easy to shunt.
its funny i went in BnQ asking for magnet wire and they looked at me like i was stupid lol

i opened up a transformer last year and i saw the wire and im like, JACKPOT, but after about 3 hours of trying to get it open i just gave up

i found a thicker wheel grinds the weld better, the thiner wheel only grinded about half the weld.

think the jolt of the hammer did it? or the break of the loop of iron

thanks for the comment , when im readyto use it i put it on a rod like its a spool, this method suresaves some money. time for some more coils :)

recycle,re-use,nice one...you might be able to use the steel laminations for making solenoids aswell

its a whole lot cheaper than radio shack.
