I love PT's honesty man. Fucking Tarantino and this fucking idiot who interviewed sasha gray for the girlfriend experience. Say they never watched porn or like it for that matter. What kind of straight male doesn't like porn. Fucking admit it man we won't shame you for it. Right on PT! Tarantino still kicks ass though.
PTA is one of the greatest directors. He really needs to make a grand scale or just phenomenal film like Nolan's Inception. TWBB was amazing but not a huge film. He's great with characters and performances from actors so he should make a par TDK film. IT COULD BE THE GREATEST FILM EVER!
@SWIFTpr0 have you seen magnolia?? what more do you want, whats the point in him making some huge film, he has already made an epic, is it necessary for a hollywood wank off? i say again, have you SEEN MAGNOLIA?? on a par with the dark knight? i think so
@leisurelydinner Honestly, I've changed my mind. PTA should just keep making films the way he does. I was convinced he shouldn't because of the way Nolan progressed from Memento. I'll also admit I am a Nolan fanboy but also a PTA fanboy. I simply enjoy great films. I even respect James Cameron fanboys even though we all know he's a complete douche bag.
Haha. Oh shit..How many Hollywoods talk like that, even him. I don't think he would say that today. I saw him promote There Will Be Blood and I thought he was the blandest guy in the world.
"its sexy that their on film" so true. seeing sex on film is so much better than on video. even like short sex scenes in mainstream movies can actually turn you on more than a full length porn video just because its on film.
@Morttinen awesome man.it's about time i meet someone who knows good films.what's your favorite film from him?.mine would have to be "punch drunk love"
@MrSANCHEZPRODUCTIONS I'd have to go with There Will Be Blood, even though Magnolia and Boogie Nights are almost as good. Punch-Drunk Love is also very good but it's still my least favourite of PTA films.
@ScorseseKubrick It seems to be connected to his mic so guessing a mic battery or similar. What an amazing interview. First one I've seen with PTA. What a man.

I love P.T. Anderson, but imagine someone seeing him for the first time, in this interview, chewing on some pizza/tart, passionately discussing the virtues and possibilities of porno. XD It cracks me up.
His next project is loosely titled "The Master" which will star Paul Thomas Anderson regular Philip Seymour Hoffman as a 'charasmatic intellectual'. Supposedly the movie's story is going to be loosely based on the formation of scientology. I'm sure the film will possess the somewhat satirical atmosphere of "Boogie Nights".

From that high horse, funny how you overlook 3 things:

Fine, that's what you believe. I happen to disagree. There Will Be Blood is a far different film to any of Kubrick's. It's comparable, yes. But that doesn't mean it copies it. Of course, you're entitled to your own opinion as well, as I am mine.
Ok, you dumb oky? Now go pleasure yourself to eyes wide shut and stop complaining

Right. He probably wasn't stealing from Kubrick. He was possibly too busy stealing from George Stevens ("Giant"), a little more Altman too, perhaps, and, of course, let's not forget about the novelist Upton Sinclair, who he originally didn't wish to credit on-screen. I mean, the Coens even credited Homer for "Oh, Brother...." but perhaps they're a bit more aware how uncool it might be to use a dead author's basic plot and not even wish to state that you did to your adoring audience.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Correction! Anderson credited the film as being "suggested by"/"inspired by" Sinclair's novel (depends on where you read it... does a hardcore fan know what it says on-screen, perchance?) but thought he deserved an original screenplay nomination, apparently. The Academy disagreed, he got a nomination for adapted screenplay. That's the story as I've come to understand it, but perhaps someone else knows another?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I don't even know what you mean by pleasuring myself to eyes wide shut since that has no relevance to what our discussion is about but w/e rocks your boat there little one. I'm not gonna argue with a school-boy college drop out who has trouble supporting his statement's and uses obscenity to make up for it.
Fan boys! All of you! go learn some film history before talking, I'm not gonna even read any of this shit anymore since It's like talking to a brick wall.
Hmm... I know it may be a little late to intervene, but you both need to chill the fuck out... Your argument is off base, and this other bastard can't put forth a comment that could be considered a valid argument. I can't really see a connection between Anderson and Kubrick (in a non post modern way), if you wouldnt mind illustrating your point It might prove helpful... Otherwise your screwed trying to win over this crowd.
Actually, I don't think Kubrick and Andersson are similar. But, Andersson references 2001: A Space Oddyssey quite a bit in There Will Be Blood. And well.
It's not to me at all no. I think the point he's tryin' to make works awesome using those references. I dunno how much is deliberate and how much is just Day-Lewis though. It's just a few people below were arguin' 'cos someone said PTA was like Kubrick. I don't think he is. But I do see 2001 in TWBB.
I can see a similarity, whether its intentional or not, but I don't think one should draw such harsh criticism (Ie bellow arguments) upon Anderson... What works, works. Its as simple as that. Blood is an amazing peice of cinema and certainly stands alone. Some people just see slight referances and start crying copycat. Directors share with one another. Can someone honestly say Kubrick is so original he wasn't influenced by earlier filmmakers. Dare I say I see a hint of Melies in 2001...

WHA!! -- is that Mike Figgis interviewing him?? The director of "Leaving Las Vegas"? How really very much below Figgis to have to pretend, between the two of them, that Anderson is the actual genius, and the one worthy of being interviewed and focused upon in-depth, like this.
I think he's putting too much polish on the porn industry. Porn films are the lowest common denominator in terms of film-making. There's nothing wholesome about them at all. It's purely impulse responsive smut.
I never said he doesn't do drugs, I just said that he isn't high here. It seems like most PTA interviews generate comments about his baked-ness. I've seen interviews of him high and it is most certainly not like this.
For everyone that thinks P.T.A. is on coke is completely wrong. If he were on drugs we would know about it. He either would've probably had an overdose by now, been in rehab, or a lot of worse things. HE IS NOT ON COKE, OR ANY DRUG. He is just a GENIUS!!! Now everyone who thinks he is on Drugs is wrong, so leave P.T.A. alone
Dude, come on. Everyone has ben on coke at one point or another. You can't write stuff like he does about using when you've never been there. He's not a bad person, he's just a guy. Give him and everyone else a break.
I hate to break it to you man, but he's openly talked about drugs before, like "running around doing coke" when he was still working as a PA. After Boogie Nights I would be surprised if he had never done coke. I knew someone who saw him at a party in LA doing "so much coke" w. Fiona Apple. It doesn't mean cociane gives him his genius or even that he still does it. Scorsese on coke made Taxi Driver. Scorsese after coke did Raging Bull, Goodfellas, etc.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yes, he's a genius at borrowing rather nakedly from greater and more original directors and thereby greatly impressing those people who haven't really delved very much into movies made prior to 1990. Compared to Anderson, Quentin Tarantino is America's Ferderico Fellini.
Guess what? Even those other brilliant directors ala Scorsese, Lynch, Gilliam, Spielberg, Lucas, Kurosawa, have all borrowed from other directors, Fellini, Tarkovsky, Ford, etc. There is really no such thing as originality if you think about it. Everything is borrowed from something else, whether it be film making, painting, nature, any stimuli. PTA may not be the most unique filmmaker, but at least he is a director who has an appreciation of his craft. He makes good films.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
There's a difference between an homage and just plain stealing. Besides, "Magnolia" is also a put-down of the "loose" spirit Altman's movies are known for, even as Anderson "borrows," so PTA's original, there - frogs rain from Heaven, implying Punishment from God (it's a pre 9/11 film, so some hipsters accepted this). Punishment's fair for PTA's nastier characters - but did Bill Macy's, for instance, deserve his teeth broken? OK - for his theft, or for trying to rectify it? So, it's just weird.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You mean, like, Altman films? Curious - ever seen any? I'm not asking to provoke anger - I'm only wondering if the problem is that a lot of Anderson's fans simply haven't seen any Altman films, which might not be their own fault. Certainly, Anderson has seen them all! IF one can legally view "R" movies then I'd recommend to them the very famous "MASH" (not the tv show, right?), but also "Nashville" "McCabe & Mrs. Miller" and... well, just seeing those, one might see what I'm griping about.
Because it's almost entirely different from the novel. That's why he didn't credit it as a full adaptation. Anyway, i'm not disagreeing with you. And I'm not a fan of Anderson's other films. Just this one.
... not saying Anderson is a bad director, both are amongst the greatest living film-makers we have today, but Tarantino can take any boring topic that Anderson might come across and make it more interesting...
Well, they are talking about Boogie Nights, and it's easy to see how he was able to write Jack Horner and Dirk Diggler after seeing this interview. On the whole Tarantino is MUCH more juvenile but that's part of who he is, nothing wrong with it.

Actually it says "based on".

Oh, stop judging people and take a joke. Besides, you're completely off the mark. And it was just a youtube comment.
forceofdust 3 years ago
SavageHenry78 3 years ago
Actually, I don't think Kubrick and Andersson are similar. But, Andersson references 2001: A Space Oddyssey quite a bit in There Will Be Blood. And well.
Jadabh2 3 years ago
And Tarantino sucked Godard dick in Pulp Fiction... Its not a big deal...
SavageHenry78 3 years ago
It's not to me at all no. I think the point he's tryin' to make works awesome using those references. I dunno how much is deliberate and how much is just Day-Lewis though. It's just a few people below were arguin' 'cos someone said PTA was like Kubrick. I don't think he is. But I do see 2001 in TWBB.
Jadabh2 3 years ago
I can see a similarity, whether its intentional or not, but I don't think one should draw such harsh criticism (Ie bellow arguments) upon Anderson... What works, works. Its as simple as that. Blood is an amazing peice of cinema and certainly stands alone. Some people just see slight referances and start crying copycat. Directors share with one another. Can someone honestly say Kubrick is so original he wasn't influenced by earlier filmmakers. Dare I say I see a hint of Melies in 2001...

I wasn't being critical

WHA!! -- is that Mike Figgis interviewing him?? The director of "Leaving Las Vegas"? How really very much below Figgis to have to pretend, between the two of them, that Anderson is the actual genius, and the one worthy of being interviewed and focused upon in-depth, like this.

Happy Birthday P.T.A.

I think he's putting too much polish on the porn industry. Porn films are the lowest common denominator in terms of film-making. There's nothing wholesome about them at all. It's purely impulse responsive smut.

he's definately a quirky dude; its surprising that the tone of there will be blood seems totally opposite to his mannerisms and attitude...

i agree, but given the question i think it's because he's just being real... just being himself... which happens to be pretty funny

he's not on drugs...he's just always jittery...one of my favorite directors...right after Stanley Kubrick and David Fincher
shroomsrgood 3 years ago
I never said he doesn't do drugs, I just said that he isn't high here. It seems like most PTA interviews generate comments about his baked-ness. I've seen interviews of him high and it is most certainly not like this.
BadlyDrawnGenitalia 3 years ago
Can you point out an interview where he's high for comparison?

Can't could be drunk. I always talk in that same exalted way when I am drunk.

He's not high here. If you want to see PT high, look up his three-part-interview on Punch-Drunk Love. Now THERE's a coked up motherfucker.

Now everyone who thinks he is on Drugs is wrong, so leave P.T.A. alone
ifilmstuf24 3 years ago
Dude, come on. Everyone has ben on coke at one point or another. You can't write stuff like he does about using when you've never been there. He's not a bad person, he's just a guy. Give him and everyone else a break.
pcr1981 3 years ago
I hate to break it to you man, but he's openly talked about drugs before, like "running around doing coke" when he was still working as a PA. After Boogie Nights I would be surprised if he had never done coke. I knew someone who saw him at a party in LA doing "so much coke" w. Fiona Apple. It doesn't mean cociane gives him his genius or even that he still does it. Scorsese on coke made Taxi Driver. Scorsese after coke did Raging Bull, Goodfellas, etc.

Yes, he's a genius at borrowing rather nakedly from greater and more original directors and thereby greatly impressing those people who haven't really delved very much into movies made prior to 1990. Compared to Anderson, Quentin Tarantino is America's Ferderico Fellini.
yes55 3 years ago

Miller" and... well, just seeing those, one might see what I'm griping about.
yes55 3 years ago
Because it's almost entirely different from the novel. That's why he didn't credit it as a full adaptation. Anyway, i'm not disagreeing with you. And I'm not a fan of Anderson's other films. Just this one.
forceofdust 3 years ago
I disagree ScottyGibbs, Anderson seems like a boring confused teenager, Tarantino is much more fascinating and enthusiastic to listen to.
BestOfTheBestNumber9 3 years ago
... not saying Anderson is a bad director, both are amongst the greatest living film-makers we have today, but Tarantino can take any boring topic that Anderson might come across and make it more interesting...
BestOfTheBestNumber9 3 years ago
what does that matter? An interview is an interview. They don't have to care if you are entertained. you're ridiculous
mondty 3 years ago
Well, they are talking about Boogie Nights, and it's easy to see how he was able to write Jack Horner and Dirk Diggler after seeing this interview. On the whole Tarantino is MUCH more juvenile but that's part of who he is, nothing wrong with it.
