Plus I think having the edge up when sheathed or stored in a stand looks better and looks like you know how to handle them IMO. I don't do sword martial arts myself but those who do will also tell you this is the correct way to store them. I hope that helped explain your question.

The reason the edge should be face up is because it preserves the blade better. If the edge is faced down the rest of the blade puts too much pressure and can dull the edge and start to cut away the saya (scabbard) from the inside. Also when you draw a katana you let it travel along the mune (spine) so the blade doesn't scrape the inside of the saya. That's all I know about why the edge should be face up since I'm not a pro but I have done some research.

You wouldn't be able to swing a real katana like that. Katana are 2 handed weapons. Also when you have a real katana attached to the side of your waist the blades cutting edge should be face up. Same goes for when storing them on a sword stand. Not being nasty, just a few pointers.
