They're touring now with Relient K and Paramore I believe, so if you want to see them live, check out their tour dates. :)

I've been scared if I go to medical school to follow my dreams and fail or flunk out my family would be disappointed and they all told me they're proud of how far I've already come and they'll just support whatever I do. This will be the first time I'll be going out on my own without anyone.

  • GREAT SONG!

  • i loveeeee this song!! the format has like no bad songs. their lyrics are amazzzing

  • You guys are really over thinking social groups. It really doesn't matter if someone is emo, or if someone is a prep. Like, honestly, no on gives a shit about your oppinions just because you posted them on this video. No one will probably care about what I say. And you know what? I don't care. It's not a big deal, you guys just need to calm down. Let people be people. Just live. That's what life is about.

  • No we are not arguing about social groups...

My original point, which was made over 3 months ago, was that there are so many bands thriving off the "emo" trend in music.

It is completely elimination creativity in composition of songs, and allowing bands to produce an album in a months time, and still sell big.

And it will continue to happen as long as people continue to blindly follow the trend.

  • Carpe Diem

  • emo stands for emotive hardcore read what that is and than you'll(everyone arguing here) realize everything you've been talking about is bullshit

  • your point being........?

  • im pretty sure emo means emotional.. but today it is mostly used to discribe sad songs :S i dunno. i dont classify music as anything but music. You get too busy trying to find what genre its in you forget it doesnt matter in the end. good song tho

  • way to use a dictionary. :)

  • @AreyouabletoBabel

You're right. Once all of you get out of high school - most of you - you'll see all these stupid ass cliques dissolve and then blend in. Now I'm an adult and hanging out with people I never would have hung out with in high school and vice versa. Nobody gives a fuck - that sh*t was never real. The sooner you all get your heads out of your asses the better.

  • @HeyJaw a-fucking-men brother

  • @AreyouabletoBabel i love you for that comment.

  • @AreyouabletoBabel I am sure you get this all the time but I love you for this haha. Thankfully social labels like that die out a bit as people get older [i could not tell you what i am today, though i was probably 'grunge' as a teenager in the 90's], so it doesn't matter anyway lol. :)

  • @AreyouabletoBabel You are my hero.

  • @AreyouabletoBabel you should be a preacher

  • @AreyouabletoBabel life is about living? wow, im moved. save your paragraph for your phd thesis paper or something.

  • i love the format. i would listen to them allll the time when this album first came out

  • i cry almost every time i hear this song

words cannot describe how amazing it is

  • This is without a doubt one of the most beautiful songs out there. I'm trying to learn the guitar to it.

  • @mitchellandrossell I'm doing the same. I love this song!

  • are you people crazy? emo? the format plays Indie Folk music. idiots.

  • Folk? lolz. No they don't. I'm not saying they're emo, but they are definetly not folk. Power-pop would be more accurate. Listen to something like She Doesn't Get It or Oceans.

  • folk doesn't mean like folk tale in music, the genres of music can surprise you sometimes.

  • i think i listen to this song like all day long nonstop and each time it sounded totally different

  • oh goshhh I forogt how much I utterly adore this song

  • this is indie-folk

  • emo used to decribe emotional punk, like pop punk bands like saves the day. fuck all you guys who hate. it's not that faggot scene with the kids that have black long hair all spiked in the back, and wear pants that belong to their little sister. I hate what the term emo has become. it's a shame.

  • Well, the fact is, it is just a tag, not an actual genre.

I think this band falls close, if not completely in with this "emo" tag.

To me, Emo is any form of simple music with an obscure set of lyrics that attempt to stir up emotion, and a foreground of music, despite what it is composed of, that attempts to amplify the aforementioned emotional obscurities.

All genres can be "emo." Metal, Punk, Pop, Trash, and Folk all the same.

Its about the style, and I feel this style is closely related.

  • Wrong! Emo is a style of rock music typically characterized by melodic musicianship and expressive, often confessional lyrics. 'Rock'... Emo originally is hardcore punk and 'indie rock'... Other examples of Emo music is Screamo... I'm sorry but this song doesn't fall into any of the above whatsoever. The term 'emo' has just been twisted over the years is all.

  • @Turelx If you're going to correct someone like a douche, don't quote someone else please.

  • What an utterly useless thing to say. First of all, I am not 'quoting someone else', I am simply using the knowledge that has been published on a public website. With a site like Wikipedia, it doesn't matter who wrote it as long as it rings true. Basically, I am quoting Wikipedia. Not that I am ashamed of that fact... Quite the opposite actually. Anything else? :)

  • Yes Ryan, you don't have to beat around the metaphorical bush. After reading the lovely little comments left by @Blackhammer99, which were almost 1 month ago by the way, I decided to read into the actual meaning of 'Emo'. And I proved myself right. Using Wiki's info, I just proved and backed up my point of you. Something Blackhammer conveniently forgot to do. Need I say more...?

  • Well, I'm guessing you call yourself an emo then?

If so, I don't pity you lot at all. You've given everyone else a reason to associate what you said above with your label. If it's not what your saying it is, what is it? It's like saying 'oh I'm gothic but I wear clothes from Banana Republic and mainly listen to Miley-fucking-Cyrus.'

  • LOL

  • this actually relates to me more than any other song. so its not just the artist.

  • then why dont you do it blackhammer? or is it to hard to play an instrument? would you prefer a premade beat on a computer? and as far as the lyrics, if you dont get this song, then your probably better off listening to rap music, where its all the same.

  • haha blackhammer is a fag and j4kk3d is gay for him, if blackhammer is such an expert, go do something other than putting down a good song douche, get a life

  • Obviously the trick to good music is to make it hard to connect with the listener. Complexity is key.

  • I was on your porch last night,

The smoke, it sank into my skin.

  • As we all know the real value of art is just in making it. Who cares whether anyone gets any meaning or joy out of it. That's why abstract art is the penultimate art form. No one can possible fathom any meaning from it, so it mean more than anyone can imagine. That's why they sell for the big bucks.

  • Oh, Blackhammer99... You're so right that the value of music is based upon complication and technical mastery. That's why free jazz is so good. Please link us your music so that we may have the honor of anonymously rating your music based upon our own opinions and without adding any real input. I'm certain that your music is so valued and awe inspiring that its perfectly reasonable for you to comment on a signed, produced, and popular band with such condescension.

  • Geez I barely remember commenting here, but I can reestablish the point I am trying to make, if you like.

This band abuses minor tone, and writes things simple enough and obscure enough that the listener can translate it into what ever they want.

It is like an amorphous blob of emotion, that can fit the listeners mood at will.

When you write with more technicality and mastery the more solid the piece becomes, not allowing for this outside translation, in turn making the song more definitive.

  • i agree with you about the lyrics. But this is nice to play on guitar.

  • But I do own this group a bit of an apology. I'm not sure where I was when I was arguing about a lack of complexity, but the various instruments are moderate enough to suffice, and the lyrics are decent, as is the singing. There is WAY worse out there, that is for sure.

But they still abuse this "emo" trend that is sweeping music, and I still believe bands like this can spring up, write ten songs, and make money just like that, simply because of the trend, not their talent.

  • I agree with you about that but I still like this song a lot.

I wouldn't really say it's emo music though, I think it's more indie-folk than emo.

This song is beautiful and it's not because it means anything to me. I think it's a great song because he's singing a story about his life and it means something to him, I hate it when people always try to apply songs to their own lives that other people wrote and are personal to the writer of the song.

  • Well, I hate to say it but, if the song is personal to the artist, and not the audience, he wont have much success.

Music like this thrives on the fact that each individual can translate it into their own meanings.

That is why "emo" is popular, because it gives people something to reflect upon.

The "emo" genre is becoming broad, but I think it encompasses the sub-genre "indie-folk" if only because of its obscurities, minor tone, and simple music.

  • Yeah, in this version of the song the singing isn't amazing but there's another version called "acoustic" although it pretty much is already acoustic where he sings an octave higher during parts of it.

I suppose it's "emo" but being short for emotional, I think the genre like this is ok but like kids who think they're "emo" I think are gay.

  • I agree with you.

The reason the "emo" classification is so poor, is because of how immature and blind its fan base is.

I feel that is a function of the way the music is produced and marketed, but not necessarily of the skill or intelligence of the artist.

Obviously, they are good enough to make good music, but the market they play to is too dumb to realize the tricks within the minor-tone and such.

If you agree with me on the fans issue, check out the Bon Iver comments.

    You'll enjoy that.

  • its not emo- its pretty, and sometimes its alright to hear a song you cant relate to. its like listening to a story. so shut up and listen or turn it off.

  • I actually find that personal songs are the ones I connect to most. It gives you insight into the writer's thoughts, their emotions and their personalities. I think it's one of the most beautiful, vulnerable ways to connect with people, and - for me at the very least - music is about connecting with people almost as much as it's about coping with your problems in a healthy, comfortable, open way. That's just me though

    XD

  • one of the greatest songs i have ever heard.

im kinda mad ive lived 3 years of my life without it

  • can you all just calm the fuck down and appreciate a piece of music? if you don't like it, don't listen to it. its your own preference. but don't judge others for their preference, and they woh't judge you for yours. grow up, all of you.

  • i cry everytime i hear this

the last three years have been so hard for me too

and hes never failed in my eyes :(

  • your a douchebag, lets see your lyrics mean more then this VVV

  • if you write a song and its too metaphorically fucked up.. than only you can truely appreciate it, This song may be simple yes, but still very well done and have a meaning that the listeners can understand, still takes alot of skill to write this song, p.s. They sell albums, you dont sound like you have even written and played a song.. Congrats tard

  • I don't sound like anything... you are only reading my words, not hearing them, but at least have the decency to respect the fact that I make a valid point. And I still question the fact if they "sell albums" because of their composition or because of a trend in music. But go ahead and link me an upload to your music hot-shot, then I will email you what I have written and recorded in the last three days. Hope to hear from you soon!

  • p.s. You don't sound like, You understand teh grammer two well. Congrats tard

  • complexity is not the key to beauty. only a fool would think otherwise. this is how music is meant to be written.. instruments and a human vocal chord.

  • That is the kind off attitude that is ruining this era of music. I mean at least they are actually playing instruments, but even rap has a large number of things going on in one song. But I can only LOL at your remark... If you think that then explain to me what Beethoven and Mozart were doing? And what of the Jazz genre? Blues is the a decent example of what your speaking of, but the music is played with such heart and soul that it makes up for it... This is just too simple to be examined.

  • you misinterpreted me.. i meant this genre of music.. classical is a whole other category.. i personally think i was born in the wrong time.. sinatra and nat king cole are more my taste.. dunno why i like this one so much

  • Why does anything need to be examined? It sounds good, so why is there any need for it to be complex? It doesn't matter.

  • It does matter. You know these guys are capable of much more, so why shouldn't they be encouraged to do so?

It is unfair of them as musicians NOT to give it their all. This is their JOB, not a hobby for them, and any other job in the world demands maximum output.

I just feel it is foolish of the fan to disagree with this. This music is wonderful to hear, and is pretty solid, but I am commenting more on the genre then the band.

  • I agree that reaching your maximum potential is important but I disagree with your comment about this being their job.

An artist has a job that's slightly different than normal. See people pay them to express themselves. So they can do whatever they want.

  • Never saw it that way.

    Very valid point.

I still feel there could be more, but you are right, it is the expression that their job entails.

This band is fine at doing that, but still...

other bands in the genre have problems with that too.

  • mmmm yeah i think i like this song a lot

  • This song is sad and i can relate to it a lot so every time i hear it i have mixed emotions. Its one of those songs where you love it but you know it will make you sad if you listen to it

  • this song is me, thank you laura smith for dedacateing it to me.

    I LOVE YOU

  • Beautiful song, I love the way it's done by "the format".

  • i luv this song its sooo sad tho :(

  • beautiful song.

i just love this, and i cry everytime when

    i hear it! ;(

  • I sent it to my boyfriend , < 3

I love this song SO much !
