...and these were the flippin' OUTTAKES! Their outtakes are better than most bands' final cuts. Geez, and they weren't even happy with it?? Are they kidding?!?!
I'd love to know the story behind this. I never came across a mention of this promo is any Yes biog I've read. Doesn't look like something that was intended as a 'music video' it looks more intended for a show like 'Old Grey Whistle Test' or similar, or maybe it was part of a larger film.
Parts of this were used for the YesYears video. Knew there had to me more. Hard to say why this was put together the way it was... some sort of prospective promo video, w/ talking over the shakier bits? (Close listening says maybe not.) Some good moments & musical suggestions here, not found on the album version. Wonder what else was filmed that day. Prob much more, moldering away in some Atlantic vault somewhere. Yes.. one of the few bands I never lost my fascination for.
know whats weird both my 2 fav bands use the same brand of guitars gibsons and rickenbacker basses aka rush's alex lifeson used gibsons in the 70's and early 80's but moved on to some other guitars but still uses them live today same with geddy and the rickenbacker i love the gibson es 137 and es 355 and love rickenbacker 4001 or 3001 and rickenbacker fireglow
Wow, great video to see them at work, I agree with all said below, to be there when they practised, created, wow..and to Devoutyesfan and jocovo84 I have to agree with you both, Yes is my favorite band of all time, I love Tormato , there are so many fantastic songs on that album...wish they could play them now! Wish they could all put aside their differences and still continue to play together. Jon is the heart and without him, its just not the same.
What a great band !!! NOBODY could touch them! A lot of people did not like Tormato when it came out, in my circle of friend's anyway. But it stayed on my turntable for what seemed like year's! Must say, I like the original more than this, but it still kick's.
I like a lot of bands, such as Yes, and Queen, Level 42, Eagles, ELO... but i can truly say that only Yes have changed my life, i actually cried because i liked Yes. I never cried over a band before, and honestly, i cannot live without Yes.
@devoutyesfan wrote: " i can truly say that only Yes have changed my life, i actually cried because i liked Yes. I never cried over a band before..."
When Yes broke up... the first time, way back when, I didn't cry... but felt the loss in some disorienting 'existential' way. ...walked around mope-headed for days... As if the world had shifted on its axis , definitely if imperceptibly, and I alone had noticed.
INCREDIBLE. Was this the greatest band of all time or what? I mean, pound for pound, who could F with them? Not many. I think I had only heard this track perhaps once in my life. It changed my opinion that the older Yes stuff is just too old fashioned to today's ears.
I can get a very similar sound to Chris's here, when I run my Bass guitar through my Ross Phaser & my Electro Harmonix Q-tron replica pedal!!!! I have no clue was he used on this session, but it has an envelope/phaser sound.
0:45 Byro = Rick's rare Byrotron. The Byrotron was like a mellotron, only it took 8-track cartridges and not 8 second linear pieces of tape. Probably one of the rarest instruments ever!
Yes,perhaps they were most creative due to that tension, somehow the bass brilliance and Steve Howes riffs really touch deep inside you.....after all these years.Priceless.
I assume you know this is from the Tormato sessions in 78. But I would love to see the sessions from The Yes Album. I'm a drummer and love Bruford. Alan White is terrific don't get me wrong, but Bruford is in a league of his own.
@artstarnyc1 Yes, they're two very different types of drummers. White is a rock drummer and Bruford is a jazz/fusion drummer. I prefer Bruford but that's just me, the band took a somewhat different direction after Alan came on. Prog rock was fading by that time so it was probably a good choice to get a more straight ahead rock drummer. I hate comparing them, sometimes feel bad for White having to come in and fill a guy like Bruford's shoes. Not an easy gig.
this is such a wonderful behind the scenes view of a session which would have been mind-blowing to attend! I agree with olias88 that this is one of the most underrated songs ever... the comings and goings of instruments as they painted with sound, this was one of Yes' supreme triumphs!
Does anyone know how Chris Squire's distinct bass sound was done? I seem to remember it showing up on this album. I don't think its is wa-wa but maybe some sort of phase shifter?
Wow, Steve Howe has to string his guitar like a regular mere mortal. He's my guitar hero and I found that very amusing for some reason.
so when they stop playing around 4:45, is it because Chris is PO'd about Rick playing a bass part on keyboard? sounded like that to me but i couldn't quite make it out... if you notice at the beginning when Jon is talking about a certain part, Chris looks to Steve and talks to him... it maybe nothing but this may be an insight into the underlying tensions that broke up the band after this album... Tormato is one of my favority albums but i really like Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes on Drama
@mouser98k Maybe a bit of tension, but remember, Yes was a very democratic band about composition/mixing. So they're still working it out. Hell, this is obviously a remix/studio outtake, this wasn't the album release...
great clip, but boy, you can sense the tension in the studio, they all look tired and haggard. It's amazing this track came out so well. It was a dark period in Yes history.
But I thank that one album I bought years ago which left an eternal burn in my heart which will never leave. Yes is simply amazing. Nothing else can describe them better. No matter what line up they had, the music was always good. Some say their work after Big Generator was weak. I disagree. I think they just got better but rap, grunge, whatever was huge at the time of Union and beyond they couldn't really compete with (on the charts, who cares about that). Anyways, great band with great fans
(lol gawd) I couldn't find it anywhere in any record store or flea market. So I turned to amazon and bought it for 4.99. Yeah, 4.99. I heard the album and thought it was great. Arriving UFO is just hilarious. A song that doesn't take itself too seriously but LOVED Rick on the keyboards. It sounded rich. Then Madrigal was just lovely. Then I thought this doesn't sound like typical Yes. Then I heard On the Silent Wings of Freedom. Probably the most underrated song ever written
(continued) That one album prompted me to buy all of them. When I collected all of them, i thought there HAD to be more. So i looked online and found out they had further works passed Big Generator. One album I completely didn't know was, yep, Tormato.
the first time i bought a Yes album... Must have been back in 2002. I switched from mainstream pop and whatever was big at the time and went back to the roots of it all. Anyways i believe it was the Highlights compilation album. The first track, Survival, blew my mind. I ran to my friend who had their debut album and loved it. I already knew about I've Seen All Good People, Roundabout and Owner of a Lonely Heart but after hearing the rest of the tunes I wanted to get all the albums
Only one group talked to me. and Tormato was their voice. Dont Kill the Whale. Arriving UFO. and of course. The Day the Circus of Heaven came to town. Not an album, a guide.
Someone said in another copy of this video that this version is better than the "official". I believe the same. It's amazing how each guy can make different layers of music that sounds so powerful. This is an evergreen song of Yes.
I want that Yes ring at the very end!!! Oh, and that was an amazing video too.

One of my top 5 songs by Yes. I'm guessing they never played it live because of just how fast paced and complex it is. But that is just my opinion.
