@TenebrousLyke Of course not, you can't base your views of Spain based on American films. They rarely get it right. Flamenco is a very old dance dating back several centuries and there are many and I mean many types of flamenco dance, but it's not supposed to be "sensual" it's a strong dance, sometimes fiery, but it's not like tango. This is Spain, not Latin America!

Flamenco has influences from many cultures, Jewish, Arabic ... it was the culture of the people who had no homes during the Spanish inquisition and were forced to be always on the move ... these songs were their laments, their way of expressing their pain.

... basically people of mixed ethnicity that were forced to become "gypsies" in Spain during the inquisition...

for those of you who this this is purely spanish then u are a nationalistic fool. the dance was outlawed by spain many time because it did not embody christianity. they people who kept performing it were living in the Moorish regions of spain and it is influenced the Sephardic and Gypsie themes. so its middle eastern and India influenced(gypsise are geneticly traced to the region).

the philippines was spain's colony for more than 300 years and there are a lot of spanish-influenced dances that evolved here but i couldn't find any that is similar or having a resemblance of the flamenco. i wonder why?

@chrisgelb because flamenco was only danced by the gitanas when the spaniards where in the philippines. The gitanas where an official member of spain but they where still seen as outcasts. It is only later, after several internal revolutians, that spain has embrassed the gitana herritige. I am quarta gitana. It is a long history.
