This video is supposed to be an "outcry" but it sounds more like a childish whine. Face it, man: you don't even know that Ligeti's Poème Symphonique was meant to be a critique of the state of music back then. The difference between Ligeti and you is that he was smart: he created a highly unfeasible yet classy performance, while you went straight for toilet humour. That video description you wrote is ten times more pretentious than anything Schoenberg ever did. This is a whole new level of FAIL.
I agree with you...Xue....I think asking a 6 year old to bash the piano in anyway would definitely sound nicer than Schoenberg...they are just mathematicians or philosophists or 'great' thinkers pretending to be Musicians...And as to Mr. John Cage's famous statement: noise is not music, music is not noise...Any sane person will know that!...
Your statement reminds me of a quote be Gustav Mahler, allegedly uttered after attending a concert with pieces by Schönberg. The greater part of the audience was booing the musicians off the stage, while Mahler kept clapping: "I didn't enjoy the piece either, but maybe it's because I don't understand it yet."
Good try! Really good try, but this is terrible. I actually feel sorry for you! It's like you wrote enough words to make people think you have a point...when really you don't. Nobody forces you to listen to crap. I'm only sorry I wasted my time. Well who cares really, I'm a composition student, I have all the fucking time in the world.
If it were all at once it would be better, as it stands this is a weak parody that isn't very thoughtful. Also the write up is pretty shortsighted and moronic. Art has always been reactionary. Even the romanticism that you seem that the artist seems to enjoy so much was reactionary. It's like conservative art, art that aims to restrict instead of advance.
haha, that's made my day! some pretencious prick could probably write an book about this piece like this, complete with diagrams, and the 'hidden' meanings behind it! It's sad that most people are put off art because of bullshit and talentless idiots with too much time on their hands.
@alexbericheath If I call someone pretentious and spell it wrong, it's not ironic mate. Nice attempt at being clever though! As for the spelling, I'll use whatever words I like thanks very much. I'm sure even a moron would get the jist of what I meant even if the word is spelt wrongly-then again....
I think the point is being missed here. Expressionism and minimalism and most 20th century styles were a revolt against the sappiness and elaborate nature of Romanticism. Sure, people like Cage did some very basic, odd things but they did them in opposition to what came before and that's always the way it's worked. You've already proven my point by posting this video. You are tired of what is considered art now so you are making a statement by creating art. See the pattern?
the difference between Stockhausen or John Cage and the art your describing as opposed to what your demonstrating here is that they actually meant and cared about what they were doing and creating. if they were indeed "pricks" (as you call them) they at least had the courage to be one and face the critics like you.
In my opinion this little video clip of yours is being a far bigger "prick" on a whole other level, and with no originality at all. I doubt that Cage, Ligeti or Stockhausen combined could have been as cynical as your so twirpishly demonstrating right here.
I'm on my final year studying music technology and am oing a module in electroacoustic music. There is some good stuff out there in any genre even electroacoustic/acousmatic musique. But I do agree that the problem is that Art has essential eaten itself and got up it's own arse to such a degree that people like Tracey Emin can display their filthy bed sheets they've just had sex in and call it art. That's not art, that's just sensationalism.
Did you know 4'33'' had been done before, as a joke in about 1890 by a French prankster? Alphonse Allais.
Also we need more outcries against elitist, modern art, that seeks only to make genuis out of mediocrity, therefore destroying thousands of years of human achievement and development. On the behalf on humankind, I thank you!
I like that video, although I don't agree with the author. If you don't like Cage, then it's ok. But there are people out there who actually enjoy this music. There is no problem with that either. Remember that "modern" art (20th century) is already quite old. Today, people can disagree with that art without being called idiots (there still some dionsaurs who get angry about that, just ignore them)
But I like 4' 33". Besides the fact that you say art is supposed to be enjoyed or whatever isn't really correct. Art is expression, not stuff for us to enjoy. Enjoyment is subjective, if I don't enjoy the mona lisa does that make it any less art? BTW, i did like this. The fact that it's expressive of how you feel des make it art, regardless if anyone enjoyed it or not.
Ironically (for you at least), I find this quite enjoyable. The fact that these are flushes doesn't bring me any displeasure (I cant smell the video ;). A sound is a sound. Music is today further than it has ever been, and it is not due to people who just complain.
You did this video to mock Ligeti, but you did it anyway and you can't stop people from actually enjoying it. So... thanks I guess ;)

You are using the crap-swallowing concept in a deplorable way. Anyway, it is useless to argue with persons who still believe in beauty.
