Theres a program for macs called Quartz Desktop. Its basically that running a Quartz composition that I have no idea where its from but they are really easy to make. That version I had there runs using sound input from the onboard microphone and converts it to numbers that control colour and size of the blobs. I haven't worked out how to get it to just accept sound from a program without having to rely on either microphone or line in though.
quartz composer comes with OSX tiger, and leopard (leopard version is newer), you just put in instillation disc on and install apple developer tools, it will then be in *your defalut HD*->devloper->applications
I didnt make either the visualisation (I dont remember where its from either) or the program that allows quartz things as desktops, but the potential for impressing friends is ace... and so is Master of Puppets :D

I would try sound flower to get audio from your computer

What did you use to make it respond to the audio? Just audio input with the microphone as the source? That's all I can think of...

Yeah! Metallica Master of Puppets, works like a visualizer, you make for yourself, there's a lot of effects can you make with the compozer Isn't?
