Could anybody tell me the significance of that post-dunk celebration where he puts his hands behind his head? Is that a UMass thing? Sorry if this is obvious, I remembered that he used to do it, but I forgot what it mean, if I ever knew to begin with. Thanks.
And yeah, Camby was ill, although I preferred it when he wore a t-shirt under his jersey.
Ahhh. I guess it just goes to show the simplest explanation is usually the right one. Here I was thinking it was the calling card of some kind of secret society or something.
Anyway, thanks a lot for the response TA14um.
You know who else went to UMass? That's right, the MLL all-time leading scorer, Mark Millon. Although I've never seen him put his hands to ears like that, which is a shame.
How did Calipari get Camby? I believe Camby was a top nationwide recruit, he could have went anywhere in the country. Why would he go to a program that wasnt established and wasnt even a blip on the map before he got there?
Do you know anything about UMass basketball? Didn't think so. They were in the NCAA tournament and got to the elite 8 before he even signed. Camby is also from Hartford Connecticut and wanted to stay close to home and he didn't want to go to UConn. So you tell me turbo.
You completely missed my point. I fully comprehend that UMASS was a basketball program on the way up but it was a program that was and still is many tiers below elite programs such as UNC, Kentucky, DUKE, etc. I don't know what ranking as a recruit camby was, Im assuming he was a top recruit. If this was the case he could of went to an established program such as UNC, Kentucky, DUKE, etc. Being close to home helps but many top recruits disregard that in order to place themselves in a premier
Using your logic it would mean that teams such as George Mason should get the top recruits each year over schools like UNC and memphis. I like your little hip words like "turbo", your friends must find you so hip. Typical Massachusetts Tool
Think for a second. Who was in the national championship game last year? Memphis. Where to they play? C-USA, a conference getting even less love than the A-10 was in the early 90's. John Calipari came in, who by the way is a recruiting genius, and did his thing. Same thing he did in the early 90's. The success just helped his cause. A man like Camby wanted to stick to his principles and also his mother had a big influence on his decision.
It's obvious you don't have the knowlege and intelligence to answer my simple question. It's a shame people like you have to compensate for thier subpar intellect with sarcasm. Keep watching family guy and south park !!
@cheezta as i live right next to umass i read many articles about this exact reason. calipari was the main reason he recruited him. first marcus camby stated he always wanted to be his local hero and play for a team locally. his dream was to always play for uconn or some other local team. but in the end he kept his eyes open for other local teams. and calapari gave him an incredible impression much better then any other coach. and was very persistant to get camby attention.
@cheezta also let me tell you calipari getting camby is truelly one of the biggest things he ever did to make his career grow but its also the main thing that made the uconn coach officially hate him for ever as you can only imagine. he stole the legend from uconns backyard. also i dont remember how but camby's mother also influenced him to go there i dont remember why at the moment but she was a big part. i think some might have even been money.
@cheezta he was getting money from people to play there which he was no supposed to be taking. which is why to this day his number is no hung up in the ceiling of the mullin center which is a pitty. because he is truelly one of the greatest from that school for basketball. and many of my fellow students who go to umass who follow basketball some how still dont even know his name. sad
that's cute BC, the official NCAA books say UMass never appeared in the final four. The banner is still there, trust me I was at the Mullins Center just last night. Camby wasn't paid to go to UMass, he accepted gifts (jewelry) from a sports agent AFTER he delcared for the NBA draft. It had nothing to do with UMass basketball or John Calipari (the coach)
@TA14um That's correct except for the timing. Camby took gifts from an agent during the summer between his 2nd and 3rd seasons at UMass, in exchange for his promise to hire the agent when he went pro. Had he done so after declaring for the draft like you said, he would not have lost his eligibility during his 3rd year and the Final Four wouldn't have been vacated. Your main point is correct though, he was not paid to come to UMass. He just got impatient and greedy for his NBA money.
@cheezta also remeber camby came from an incredibly poor family and obviously wanted to change that if he could so money to him was a big deal for him to get as he and his family suffered miserably from being poor. so for him to make money for playing basketball and support his family was possibly one of his main goals. now i think he supports them fine while in the nba. but in college you can only imagine he was probably anxious and had no idea if he would make it so taking money was important
I always believed if Umass was #1 before, they can be again. Umass has alot of basketball history. Julius Irving and Marcus Camby. let alone a future hall of fame coach in rick pitino playing there.
and maybe I live literally 10 minutes from the campus and you probably didn't know but UMass once was #1 in the nation and made it to the final four and theres a lot to know about those times...and what the fuck do you think I sit home all day and read them no I think its acceptable to read a book no matter what its about wouldn't you think?
i just got Marcus Camby for Chris Duhon in my fantasy basketball league.
What a joke!
