The shaking sounds at the beginning, middle, and end of the song make me think of leaves and trees falling, or rain. You know how damn good a song must be for you to get a perfect picture of it in your head without even having to listen to the lyrics? Yeah, pretty damn good!
This is the sound of one falling. "In a Lonely Place" is the sound of death. "Decades" is the sound of a funeral. The ultimate trio of closers for Ian's short and tragic life.
I just got back from seeing Peter Hook and the Light perform this in San Francisco. Never before have I been so close to tears at a show when hearing a song live than with this one. IMO I don't think Bernard Sumner made a good front man, though I'm still a fan of New Order. Peter Hook brought that depth and intensity to the stage beyond my expectation. It took this long for Ian to receive the recognition as an artist that he deserved, such a tragic story.
@TrickRider58 Psychedelic: From greek, psique = "soul, spirit" (concept) + dellos = manifestation. So Joy Division is a very poetic, expressive band. I think they are psychedelic. But who cares about definitions? Let's enJOY it!
THE ULTIMATE SOUND OF ITS SPEEN WITHIN ... NO BETTER SONIC DESCRIPTION OF JOY DIVISION'S MUSIC THROUGH IAN 'S SHUFFLE ... a so beautiful tragic swan song !!!
Such a painfully beautiful yet emotionally desolate song. The ebb and flow of the tide; relentless, cold yet somehow life affirming - fits the song perfectly. This is one for watching at 3am when nothing else in the world seems to make sense.
Some nice comments but the track sounds a whole lot more impressive to me when the audio hasn't had the piss compressed out of it for YouTube. Honestly took me about 30 secs to work out whether or not this was the 'Closer' version.
@rafaquiros7 what an unnecesary thing to point out when obviously the numbers will change. thanks for making me wanna cram a golf ball into my eye socket...
For me this music is a cure,a getaway from dark reality. My depression is smooth and brutal, and this song takes me away from that things. In combination with some antidepressive drugs i forget every problem in this bad period of time that i am going trough now. Thank you IAN! Rest In Peace

Elton John : Sang the words " sad songs say so much " but none of his songs were sad ,at least not in a mellanchollic way . I think people listen to Joy Division especially this song , to cleanse their minds of sadness rather than to pull themselves into its grip . Yes Ian Curtis was a genious and his death was tragic ,but he had an illness that most of us thankfully will never comprehend .

this music is like a bright like in a dark corners of my life... Every time when I'm down, I love to listen to this music, it makes my depressions look nicer
Beautiful yet haunting at the same time. It's hard to accept that Ian killed himself only a few weeks after recording the album this tracks taken from, Closer.
@714a13x909 it actually is the last geat rock and roll album, and the very end of rock music as we know it. It was also the death march for the art form. What a way to go out. Listen to it over and over again, you won't find anything remotely like it.
In Macclesfield there was a little Mongol kid that lived in a house with a garden, and the kid would never be able to come out of the house, and the kid’s whole universe was the house to the garden wall. He said many years later that he moved back and walked past the house, and by chance he saw the kid. Ian had grown up from being five to twenty, twenty two years old, the kid still looke
One word to describe this song. Heartbreaking.

Praise to the glory of loved ones now gone.
Talking aloud as they sit round their tables,
Scattering flowers washed down by the rain.
Stood by the gate at the foot of the garden,
Watching them pass like clouds in the sky,
Try to cry out in the heat of the moment,
Possessed by a fury that burns from inside."
