  • One word to describe this song. Heartbreaking.

  • Fuck these commercialized BS ads, Cant normality realize THIS IS NON COMMERCIAL MUSIC. Assholes.

  • I stop listen to Joy Division, that isen't helping..

  • Beautiful video! Fits the song so well... :)

  • The shaking sounds at the beginning, middle, and end of the song make me think of leaves and trees falling, or rain. You know how damn good a song must be for you to get a perfect picture of it in your head without even having to listen to the lyrics? Yeah, pretty damn good!

This is the sound of one falling. "In a Lonely Place" is the sound of death. "Decades" is the sound of a funeral. The ultimate trio of closers for Ian's short and tragic life.

  • Never thought this song belonged on Closer. The rest of the songs are great, but this is on another level entirely.

  • @MattMonk

I want to kill myself listening to this song...

  • @prozacpeople Then don't listen to this song.

  • I just got back from seeing Peter Hook and the Light perform this in San Francisco. Never before have I been so close to tears at a show when hearing a song live than with this one. IMO I don't think Bernard Sumner made a good front man, though I'm still a fan of New Order. Peter Hook brought that depth and intensity to the stage beyond my expectation. It took this long for Ian to receive the recognition as an artist that he deserved, such a tragic story.

  • best joy division"s song. video is amazing

  • Who says Pink Floyd s d best psychedelic band?!!

  • @jonty3awal People who know that Joy Division isn't psychedelic.

  • @TrickRider58 Psychedelic: From greek, psique = "soul, spirit" (concept) + dellos = manifestation. So Joy Division is a very poetic, expressive band. I think they are psychedelic. But who cares about definitions? Let's enJOY it!

  • @IsraelSilvaOficial I never knew that. And I can totally get on board with enjoying the music. :)

  • for my funeral.. , since I'm 15, I always loved this song !! magic song

  • when your laying forever in the grave: "No words could explain, no actions determine Just watching the trees and the leaves as they fall"

  • I just wanna cry but this is painful and beautiful at the same time

  • THE ULTIMATE SOUND OF ITS SPEEN WITHIN ... NO BETTER SONIC DESCRIPTION OF JOY DIVISION'S MUSIC THROUGH IAN 'S SHUFFLE ... a so beautiful tragic swan song !!!

  • After you listen to this read or listen to The Hollow Men by T S Elliot. T S Elliot and Ian where on the same page

  • @MrHiltonCubit thx for the info... seems like t s eliot definately influenced ian!

  • "Procession moves on, the shouting is over,

Praise to the glory of loved ones now gone.

Talking aloud as they sit round their tables,

Scattering flowers washed down by the rain.

Stood by the gate at the foot of the garden,

Watching them pass like clouds in the sky,

Try to cry out in the heat of the moment,

Possessed by a fury that burns from inside."

Oh God this song is absolutly beautiful and... R.I.P

  • Such a painfully beautiful yet emotionally desolate song. The ebb and flow of the tide; relentless, cold yet somehow life affirming - fits the song perfectly. This is one for watching at 3am when nothing else in the world seems to make sense.

  • This song is my life...

  • Some nice comments but the track sounds a whole lot more impressive to me when the audio hasn't had the piss compressed out of it for YouTube. Honestly took me about 30 secs to work out whether or not this was the 'Closer' version.

  • damn im soooo fucken heart broken........its painful

  • Such talent in this song. RIP IAN C

  • Happy Birthday Ian

  • @rafaquiros7 what an unnecesary thing to point out when obviously the numbers will change. thanks for making me wanna cram a golf ball into my eye socket...

  • best of the best

  • Altough it's a chliché, I listen to Joy Division everytime I'm down. Because no one else can describe my feelings more that they do.

  • For me this music is a cure,a getaway from dark reality. My depression is smooth and brutal, and this song takes me away from that things. In combination with some antidepressive drugs i forget every problem in this bad period of time that i am going trough now. Thank you IAN! Rest In Peace

  • @SilentAlien55 heavy...

  • Somertimes, when I need to ask God something personal, i watch in the sea water until found the right words for the right question, or until the water change color from grey to turquise...

  • This is the most depressing music mankind has to offer.

  • .R.I.P IAN! 31 YEARS TODAY!

  • I can't believe that people so young produced such a trancendent magical song . I tend to think that it fought its way out of their minds .

  • my favorite and to me the MOST BEAUTIFUL SONG OF THE WORLD AND OF LIFE

  • 26 people are going to hell, sad that . . .

  • This song scared me so bad one night in 1980 I ran out of the apartment and down the street!

  • the sound of a funeral procession

  • @johnnyXsniper Maybe how you feel. To me is just so powerful....

  • The Sound Of Death...

  • @potchoker

The sound of suffering, isolation, and pain....

  • R.I.P. Ian

  • This is the pinnacle of desolation. It's a long drop looking down...or rather, a long way looking up.

  • @NarrowJoy

Desolation, pain and suffering.... You are right....

  • Joy Division лучшая группа!

  • such a sad theme/background to this song. man if i could only express as well as ian did in his songs

  • @guitar19904

Such pain, such suffering.... So sad....

  • Brilhante!

  • The love of the moment, the murder I never set up, nor by way of group, nor by way of rape, nor by way of pillage nor plunder, strikes eternal on the shore as an thunder against all they who commit such as those be in immortality's blunder.

  • 25 people are mentally ill.

  • muito louco...

  • Is It Just Me .. Or Is This The Sound Of Death? R.I.P

  • @potchoker Although not diagnosed at that time, Suicidal Ideation is now a Known part of depression...

My son was diaganosed with it.. Although I was not find this out until too late....

  • @potchoker death is silent, or not even that. but I've got your point.

  • 25 fuckers must die

  • wicked , awesome, lush brilliant , no words to describe thia amazing song ....RIP , ian

  • may ian rest in peace. one of the greatest things i have, and probably ever will, listen to.

  • It was while listening to this song that I began to weep and tie a guitar amplifier cord around the knob of my door. I didn't have the courage that time...

  • @slangshotstudios what stopped you? a memory?

  • Most depressive song ever

  • True feelings and soul!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This should have been the last tracks of 'Closer'.

  • A true masterpiece of one of the best bands ever. It think you must be suicidal to write such a song.

  • I do not know why but I love this video. has the magic as well as music...

    Greeting from Poland! :)

  • 21 people oughtta get gang-fucked by the LAPD.

  • Who were the 21 heartless bastards who disliked this? For shame! You're soulless pod people who should be forced, at gunpoint, to listen to simoncuntcowell's manufactured, plastic, pus-sucking mongnoise for all eternity. Someone get me a Tylenol!

  • @brianartillery hahahahahhahaha

  • My favorite JD song, so desolate and achingly gorgeous.

  • you have to give 21 idiots there chose....mmm...........

  • What a nice song!

    ;o)

  • Before the bass line starts, it sounds like the Durutti Column's "Sketch for Summer". Martin Hannet produced that song too, so i guess it's logic.

  • There is a euphoric exctasy in listening to depresing music...a moment in life we have all shared . Having a hero to express those feelings for us

  • @68hoppe well put :)

  • @68hoppe thats subjective....besides whats a hero?

  • @68hoppe so true...

  • there was a boy who was having trouble with mental difficulties always stood at the fence and gate thats about him that ian saw everyday going to work x

  • 22

  • 984 likes 21 dislikes?????

  • Elton John : Sang the words " sad songs say so much " but none of his songs were sad ,at least not in a mellanchollic way . I think people listen to Joy Division especially this song , to cleanse their minds of sadness rather than to pull themselves into its grip . Yes Ian Curtis was a genious and his death was tragic ,but he had an illness that most of us thankfully will never comprehend .

  • @andymckelvey1967

i listen to this and it drags me further sadly : ( but i fucking love joy division

  • So genuine, so Eighties. I wonder about tech-age in India and China?? One guy told me there that Moby was "depressing".

  • an unlucky deal...

  • tank u for posting this one ...great video and song :)

  • Another edition to you Dark music collection. Name on YouTube is WISPRWORLD. Big fan of Joy Division and very influenced by the style of music they did. Subscribe to my channel and you will receive my new material as soon as is done. Thanks.

  • Fuck me, Radiohead got "Street Spirit" from this, listen carefully.

  • @OptikC tom york was a big fan of JD, not surprising

  • I know I'm gonna catch shit for saying this but everybody whose like Oh Ian you left too soon or I feel like ian s in my soul or Just like Kurt he left too soon or I feel their pain boo friggin who. He (and Kurt Cobain) made that conscious decision to end their lives and left their loved ones with the final bill of pain.Kinda selfish and cowardly if you ask me.

  • @H20654 in a way you're right,,every suïcide is selfish, instead of dealing with probs they run,but i think it's depression, which is not a state of mind but a real fysical disease

  • @guidodeb I can see where your coming from too

  • @H20654 i had my fair share of problems,,but in a way music like JD alwaysput me back on the rails,,i knew their music before i found out Ian killed himself and the early works of New order stayed in that direction, except for the poët Ian. So to me in makes not much difference if he hanged himself on the rack,,,,people die everywhere every second,,,,it's the way it is try listening to Section 25 always now,i think it's on YT,,, indeed JD were inspiring!!!! ty for reacting! greetz flanders

  • @guidodeb Me too But all told I do love his music. And I do understand some of his songs. I been through stormy seas myself. But Hey thank you too, It is what is is and section 25 I'll definatly check them out. Try Band of horses too there a good band aswell . Greetz from Coastal MA USA . BTW Keep Positive +

  • @H20654 alwaysss,,,no worries mate

  • @H20654 I understand what you're saying. It's still sad, though. Depression hurts a lot. Feeling like there's no other way out doesn't help, either.

  • @H20654 his "loved ones" could have helped him. But your right in the sense that people need to stop complaining about his suicide. His suicide, as tragic and sad as it was, is what makes his music and his words so immortal and so burning

  • @eoinkelly139

It's noticeable that Joy Division fans seem aggressively sensitive to a relatively small number of dislikes. Noted this on other vids too. Why makes humans so intolerant of people whose tastes diverge from their own? It's surely not that idiotic to dislike overtly depressive music.

  • @roquefort88888 a lot of JD fans are, to put it bluntly, a pain in the arse when they get on to the topic of Ian Curtis and the mawkish demagoguery they lik eto festoon over his body of work. I suspect that many are attracted to this band cos of the leged of Curtis and know fuck all about the precociousness of Barney, or the innovation of Hooky, or the skill of Morris. Or they are viewed only as supporting characters in The Curtis Show. The zealous are always the most intolerant.

  • @eoinkelly139 Army of idiots 24 strong! Perhaps they should meet Ian in person!

  • @eoinkelly139 26 now, oh jesus, they are multiplying!!

  • @eoinkelly139 26 idiots were here!

  • @eoinkelly139

    500,300 non-idiots were here....

  • verry down, and sad, but it goes deep, and that s the importance... deepness..

  • I'd probably say this is Joy Division's bleakest song. It's so beautifully morose.

  • forgot just how great JD were, thanks youtubers for bringing back some memories

  • IAN STILL LIVES IN MY SOUL!!!MAD SAD

  • ...

  • a tribute for the 20th century

  • Godly voice. Great music.

  • Time......................

  • Does any one where was these video made?

  • @wisprworld - It's apparently a beach on the Atlantic coast of Portugal. I asked avlis77 the same question a few months ago. RIP Ian.

  • @wisprworld Beach of Pedrogão, disctrict of Leiria, Portugal

  • this music is like a bright like in a dark corners of my life... Every time when I'm down, I love to listen to this music, it makes my depressions look nicer

  • I like to listen to this song when I walk through difficult moments

  • Beautiful yet haunting at the same time. It's hard to accept that Ian killed himself only a few weeks after recording the album this tracks taken from, Closer.

  • Comment removed

  • WOW, i have never heard this before now, Ian you are sorely missed. A true poet. Exactly what the world lacks these days.

  • @fuckknuckle1981 what does that mean?

  • Wow. You can hear where Tool got their influence.

And yeah, someone's gonna pick on me for being a Tool fan. Deal.

  • @TwoCows23 pst.....noone cares.

  • fantastic

  • this is probably my favourite joy division song, its so sad but so brilliant at the same time.

  • I killed myself after watching this

  • In response mate.. If your feeling sad?.....remove all sharp objects! Mwahaaaaahaaa

  • Chops! feeling down?.....remove all sharp objects!

  • this song was mentioned in Jean-christophe Valtats new novel "03"..just translated into English in 2010...in French 2005...p43...

  • A chaque fois que j'écoute ce morceau, je revois la scène de la procession du chef d'oeuvre d' INGMAR BERGMAN " LE SEPTIEME SCEAU".

  • i came out the closet last year. i call it my boy decision

  • dude, this song is so emotional, i wanna kill myself now

  • @714a13x909

have you listened to the whole album D:

  • @AwesomeCoasters

i have actually, its pretty sick

  • @714a13x909 it actually is the last geat rock and roll album, and the very end of rock music as we know it. It was also the death march for the art form. What a way to go out. Listen to it over and over again, you won't find anything remotely like it.
