When i practice my scales I start (let's use C) at c and go to c one octave up then back down. I see here you travel up through more than one octave then down through more than one. Please explain the proper fingering for practicing like this, it looks really fun and sounds great but you go so fast I can't catch the fingering
@johnnyhanx hii...lets say you're playing Cmajor scale with your right hand, then while you are about to finish the octave on the next C, instead of placing your pinky finger there, use your thumb and then straightaway get to play more octaves, as many as u like, in the same way you play one octave! :)
Thank god I found you page, this knowledge is indispensible to me. I began piano as a child and circumstances lead to my not being able to play. I have a craving in side to learn how to play correctly, I've been teaching myself to play again by ear but what I play sounds so simple and has no texture. I'm trying to get the theory as I know this will unlock the ability to add texture and depth and style to my play. Your vids are amazing i'm going to learn so much from them thankyou!!
Lypur, I have learned so much with you! I paid for lessons in the past with NO results - at least with your humor I finally get the concepts!! I am an intermediate player and recommend you highly! And for free? cannot belive it sometimes. Plus, you are VERY talented! Bless you always. Robert
you should show people double thirds and sixths, as they're extremely useful for building technique (much more even use of fingers than normal scales, where finger 5 is used once and 4 almost not at all) Rosenthal was a serious advocate of this.
please explain me what fingers are you using in playing first scale i don't know what fingers i must use :( i thnk the right goes 312341231234123 but left ??? tell me
my issue is i have mercury retrogade so i can't learn anything the first time so i m watching all your lessons once without much practicing then im going to go back and rewatch them all and practice starting then. so im lost still on fingering and stuff =(
hey, don't feel bad, we all have bad days :) I think you'll lesson #36 and on, they're fun, #40 will be very helpful, you could watch that right now if you'd like :)
@Lypur Some scales have not so obvious fingering, for example, i know that B minor looks pretty simple, but I play with a different fingering every time with my left hand ....
do you know where can I get a piano book of scales with all the fingering?
Great video, thanks. Not sure why I only decided to watch this now, my piano exam's tomorrow lol Still, that polyrhythmic technique seems like a good idea, I'll try that out (would have helped me with some Mozart from time to time, so now I know how to improve that area of my playing). Thanks again.
Not sure I understand your finger pattern there, Andrew. By the time I get up to the high C and E, my fingers are all out of control, not like yours where you end up with the same fingers on C and E as you started out with. It seems easier to just start out using your thumbs and cross over to your third finger throughout the whole thing. maybe you rotate your crossovers with your 3rd and 4th finger (on the left hand,) I dunno. Of course thats for the first scale you demonstrated.
well it's not bad, but it's not as effective. You want to avoid the most amount of finger tucks as possible while keeping your fingers in line with the notes. It's the most efficient way known at the moment, if you can figure out a better way then that would be the best way.
This is of great value. Can you do something on transcriptions? Like, I'm working on some orchestral pieces for the piano, a la Liszt, but simpler. Can you show an easy way without being a virtuoso?
heh, less critisium from you now :) It's good to know there are nice people out there!
Umm, to be honest I probably am not qualified to give any tips on your request. So I don't want to just BS my way through that topic. I hope you understand ^_^
Just wanted to say thanks a million for all of these videos you've been posting, I think you're doing a brilliant job towards equality between those who can afford expensive music lessons and those who can't but have just as much desire (and often a lot more!) to learn. I think the world needs a lot more people like you, and I know I am only one of many out there who really seriously appreciates what you are doing more than you will probably ever know. Thanks!
I need some advice. I had to transfer to a new job for 1 year. I have 5 more months to go then I will transfer back home. I have not been practicing and I am losing my touch. Do you suggest I start at the very beginning again?
it couldn't hurt to go back, usually we need to see something over 6 times to remember it fully. If you're feeling discouraged then going back could help ^_^ but you're almost at the end 36 is the last one I've done so far. So watch that and then go back if you like ^_^
Well, perhaps its ok for someone who knows nothing of piano to learn from you. Because they won't know any better. Your technique is not that good. Your technique is at a barely intermediate at best. It's obvious just by looking at your hand movement.
actually.....I do...I just don't leave them up. You just have to check every now and then and you should see 2 or three posted at a time. Perhaps you can learn something.
Wow thats alot of lessons right there. I got a question, if i follow through all of these videos and do as you say, i should be able to become at least alright, right?
learning all the things i show will definitely give you a great foundation and attitudes to continue your studies and i think by the end of it you should be at an intermediate level of piano. So yea :) you should be alright :D
awesome ill get started soon. my mom bought a piano for my baby sister who is only 4, so its just sitting in the house for no reason at all, so as long as im still in high school might as well do soemthing with it. these lessons look great btw looks like u put alot of time and effort into them
just wanted to let you know that your video posting your time dedication and talent is VERY much appreciated and taken advantage of it i hope u continue and i wish u great success in all you do and thank you again
doing the formula patterns for me is harder with the f#minor/gbminor and also the c#minor/dbminor scales

When you say "most pieces are based off of scales", I would like to know, what pieces are not based off of scales?
mikejackson4ever 2 years ago
Syrinx by Debussy
lzyswine90 2 years ago
A lot of pieces actually...
Most of those are composed after WO I though.
For example: check the second Viennese School (Schonberg, Berg, Webern)

It's funny to me how, when some people practice music, they're just trying to "get it out of the way". The whole point is to savor every note.

no worries! it'll get easier over time, even if it seems IMPOSSIBLE now it will become possible with practise. ^_^

hehe.. I mean, it's not a bad thing to do by just using my first, second, and third finger on the C Major scale you showed us, is it? :)

I see. So, it is best to alternate tucks between the third and fourth fingers. Guess I better get used to it, I do like things efficient :D
Thanks very much for the replies . ^.^
