  • Out of all the bonsai videos i have watched, i found you the most intresting. Loved the pot + moss technique, you got my subs.

  • can i get some audio in the left ear too?

  • I get sound but boy is it BAD!

LOL, like the comment on doing it in your friends house, think I'll do it in their bath.

about Spagnun, be careful, maybe best to wear rubber gloves as some people are allergic to a fungus it contains and can get ill. Don't go breathing in any dust from the sack!

  • I get sound but boy is it BAD!

  • Looks like a good vid. But no sound

  • Very good video, thanks! I can't wait to start my own bonsai!

  • Dude I like your videos but if I here you say "Banzai" instead of Bonsai one more time I'm going to scream. Banzai = "Ten thousand years" Bonsai = plantings in tray, from bon, a tray or low-sided pot and sai, a planting or plantings.

When you mispronounce this word you sound dumb. Your videos are good. Your Japanese sucks.

  • Cool, I'm going to try this. Even though it isn't necessary, can other materials (small stone, for example) still be used on top for aesthetic purposes?

  • ahhaha imma do this with my marijuana plant, or ganja >.<

  • Hun, i'm sorry but, they really is no sound and i have my headphones on, please don't be angry

  • With this method you will never be able to train the roots into a nice nebari.

  • Please excuse my previous comment, in regards to pH. I meant to type lower pH; 4s & 5s. Sphagnum etc. is acidic. :)

  • Be careful when using sphagnum, hypnum, and similar bryophyte based mixes. They tend to have higher pH, have extremely high water holding capacities (anaerobic root conditions), and love to pick up soluble salts (rootburn and over fertilization; i.e. long and gangly shoots). For the slow/hard growth required to dwarf a plant, a well drained and primarily inorganic soil is best.

  • Sphagnum moss is good for potting new projects.i

  • spanghum mos is maybe good for seedlings but if you watch other videos of him you can see that the roots wil get ugly and not supportive.

  • @mitilika that was by his choice for exposed roots, and this method is great for beginners, i started out using this method and now i use both methods of soil and sphagnum moss

  • well....i dont know if i should tke mine out of the soil now, will that do damage to the plant?

  • No Sound..................

  • just seen your video. i remember brian batchhelder. i have his book and some of his video. nice job

  • can barely hear your video hun even with everythign blasting on my laptop

  • That is a cone tree not a ponytail palm.

  • thank you sir... you're a fountain of knowledge... I started with a more traditional method and found that it was very time consuming... and it does take a long time to get the desired look... I'm in north Jersey... so one of my concerns is if i can leave my bosais out for the winter in the moss... I have 13 citrus trees I started from seeds, last year- I put all my outdoor plants together, fenced them in with some wire mesh and covered the m with leaves it work... I have a 14' 4 year plum.

  • I have two questions. 1. Should the tree be kept moist at all times? 2. Won't the roots freeze during the winter?

  • what's the name of the plant he used???

  • @hoslov he said it was a juniper parsoni

  • @juniorgut1 thanks

  • nice video

  • awsome video i love gardening and this was extremly helpful you rock

  • where did you get the trays/pots that have that design?

  • a) it's "bone-sigh", not "baanzai"

    b) peat moss is not "finely ground sphagnum moss" It's peat. Duh.

    c) So many weeds coming out of that pony tail palm's medium. you realize weeds take up fertilizer & nutrients, robbing them from the plant, right?

    d) Dry sphagnum is difficult to re-wet (look at the water pressure required in the bin) - a dry rootball w/sphagnum is a dead bonsai. Sphagnum is also not free-draining and retains too much water.

SPHAGNUM = DEAD BONSAI. AVOID THIS METHOD!

  • why do you always use moss? surely a good type soil is much better as a planting medium?

  • @arowanamaster there is no such thing as "a good type of soil" for a container plant, bonsai or not. any mix that is going to last for more than 6 months or so needs to be soiless.

  • bonsai trees cannot be treated like that. he made lots of common mistakes, and that is how your trees wont last longer than 5 years. these trees require a more delicate treating

  • that plant is?

  • Agreed, no audio.

  • Is it just me or is the sound not working?

  • STEPHEN CARL MURPHY CO.

  • this guy talks shit fatty, i dont want no clump of wood with weeds hangin out

  • all possible mistake is visible on this video. thanks.

  • Gerry - great video. Very informative and covers all the bases for a newbie like me. Thanks!

  • Sir please make sure you use sustainable harvested Sphagnum a you where right when you said it grows on bark up north and it get's cut off quite easaly, but when you take of the first 2-3 feet of a trunk it can take decades to grow back , it is getting to be a serious problem for area's that are getting stripped of the spaghnum wich playes a VITAL part in the retaining of water and airing the soil of bogs and marches.

  • @nevyn1(follow up message) I know that new zealand has a sustainable sphagnum harvesting program so that would be quite easy to check out.

I don't want to sound all high and mighty but a lot of foke's dn't know this is going on and so i get a bit weary when people "advertise" the use of sphagnum bigtime.

    Loved everything else though!

  • I like your personality, very fun. It's nice to learn from someone who can keep your attention.

  • Dear Sir, I'm really enjoying to watch your Bonsai Easy Methods. I have Japanese maple and planted in ground about couple years ago. I would like to make it Bonsai. In what season would be the best to make bonsai? I live in north of Virginia. Can I make Bonsai in spring? I really would like to apply your method Sagnimoss(??) how do you spell? Thank you so much.

  • @dhanraj540

It is spagma moss or peat moss.

  • nice vid, i want to make one now :P

can yust someone tell me do i have to use moss or i can use ground? cos im not sure if i can get moss like this :P

  • Have you tried adding a combination of super thrive & miracle grow quick start transplant starter solution when you first pot your trees?

  • Hello Mr. Levitt. I live in deep south Texas. I have been looking for the bulk bag of spaghnum moss but no one has it. Where do you get your moss from?

  • isnt that a bread knife?

  • o_O' what the hell are you doing?! And you call this "bonsai"?

    Poor juniperus....

PS: guys if you want to make a REAL bonsai don't listen to those videos, or you will trash a lot of plants!

  • Horrible. Do NOT take this guy seriously. The moss idea is okay but his repotting method is WRONG!!!!!! You won't get proper roots this way.

  • Thank you for taking time to make a video about bonsais.

  • isnt the art of bonsai ,Japanese.....

  • it is....^^

  • it was started in china then moved to jaan n they made it famous lol

  • Jerry,

If I am being honest I would have to say

your handling of the trees seems quite cavaliere and lacking in subtlty and the results lack grace and refinement. You appear to derive enjoyment in unorthodoxy itself...much like a teenager who enjoys rebellion for its own sake. This belies a certain immaturity which is reflected in the specimens. Simply put, the results are more like a child's finger paintings than true artistic creations. These do not look like refined bonsai to me.

  • Obviously you are a seasoned "bonsiaist" This guy is obviously speaking to beginners!! HE's just trying to emphasize that it has simplicity to it. I think you need to tone down your comments, because they appear to be non constructive and insulting....kind of like a child who is being brutally honest with no thought of the other persons feelings! have you ever heard the expression if you have nothing nice to say dont say. maybe you should edit some of what comes out of your mind and onto text!

  • Look closely at this man, and who do you see? That's Jeff Bridges. That's The Dude.

    Think about that.

  • Comment removed

  • awesome advice... this really helped!! nope everything made it thru the hurricane......

  • Everything about this video reminds me of an infomercial scam.

  • it killed my ponytail bonsi Im pissed I had it for years dont listen to this guy or you will kill your bonsi trust me..

  • My ponytail bonsai is doing great, listen to this guy, your bonsai will thrive, trust me

  • Do some research on your plant material next time. The pony tail pal is not a true palm, and is indigenous to arid regions of Mexico. Do you think that a plant that likes dry conditions would do well growing in sphagnum moss?

  • thats only cause ponytails need a cold time and it needs a dry season.

  • The volume is waaaaaaayyyyyy tooo low!

    almost no sound at all.

  • Great video, I am trying to get some moss for a juniper I pulled out of my front yard so I can really get to work on it. I do have a question though, my juniper looks similar to a christmas tree in that it is a single vertical branch and the entire thing is already 26" tall, should I clip that branch so it doesn't just keep growing out of proportion to bonsai? I also want my tree to have an "S" shape to it, gotta learn up on training I guess : ) Great video buddy!

  • You'll have to bend the trunk with wire -- either spiral the wire around the trunk, or use guy wires and turnbuckles. I plan on doing a video in the near future about bending trunks on large trees. As far as pruning it down, I would wait until next spring. We're too close to the end of the growing season.

  • CHASNSX, what you just said about bending the trunk with wire goes to show that you have no idea of what you are talking about. Thats why they have TRUNK BENDERS. Yeah you have been bonsai for 20 years? I don't think so. Maybe you should just stay quiet.

  • @vonperro why you always hating on people? ive seen you comment against chansnsx a few times... sad.... damn trolls

  • I have sound when I listen to it. It may be your computer sound settings.

  • @duckiesgirl the sound is mono and if one of the speakers is not working properly - you'll not hear anything. I'm hearing with my right headset speaker only :(

  • im gonna buy one

  • great video

  • why do you people even watch his videos if you think they suck, yet even comment rudely about them they are great and great advice for beginners.

  • would sphanum moss be good for bonsai in western australia

  • i would assume so it works almost everywhere lol.

  • try adding to our education for a change. ya ya I know, i don't know how to compose a teachers pet sentence like most of you, and I also live in a trailer and eat top ramen.

  • For anyone thinking of leaving negative comments about this cats video, saying something about how his methods suck and how he doesnt know what he's doing, or know how to spell or whatever, do us all a favor. Don't post anything, or please post your own video of what methods you use. since some of you are acting like you know way more than he does, and if you do know, i ask what are you doing watching his vids.

  • Good point, but this is not a cats video.

  • OmG thanks mr bonsai9723

  • orrible?

  • could you keep them in a small pot, like 12"-12" for its life. and does clipping the roots and twigs keep them small. I want to get one so please help.

  • just because you blah blah blah work on imported japanese "specimens" doesnt give you the right to be a "worldclass" DICK

  • Pot, meet kettle.

  • I subscribed to your page!

Question: Can you compost the roots, and how about composting the dirt from the plant.?

  • Absolutely wonderful!!! You have no idea how much you helped me. I love your videos, and i hope you make tons more =)

  • Jerry,

You're doing a great job helping people out, keep up the good work!! Hope your son is doing better.

  • my juniper had no branches just the main ones will it grow big

  • Is it just my computer, oe is the sound low on this video? It looks very imformative. I was wondering if there are any videos relating to re-potting Bonais Trees, (Ficus).

  • I didn't know that you could use spagnum moss as a pure medium. I was taught that spagnum moss is usually mixed in with soil. There is one thing that I could possible see wrong with using it as a pure medium is holding nutrients. But for bonsai I guess that could possibly be a good thing by slowing the growth. I'll have to try that.

  • Hi, In this method we fertilize lightly once a week to replenish the nutrients. It promotes excelellent plant growt, and with proper pruning, you can make your trees liik older sooner. We want the growth to expand. Then we shape by pruning. A simple, and easy way.

  • Hello my name is Andrea, I just bought a dwarf jaded bonsai and I was wondering do I water this tree every day or every 2 to 3 days b/c people on the internet say this bonsai doesn't need that much water. I just want to make sure it is getting the proper amount of water. Greatly appreciated.Thank You

  • Hi, Jades are succulents and store water. They tolerate drying out very well. I have some Jades and they get watered almost every day with my bonsai. But mine are growing in sphagnum moss, which has different water holding properties than soil. If in soil, I would think you could stretch out the watering schedule. I would advise to have good drainage and don't let the bottom of the pot sit in water. Jerry

  • Sorry this is Andrea again I live in Metairie,Louisiana the bonsai has morning light then the tree goes back inside in the living room with light coming through the french doors.I just want to know the right watering method for my bonsai

  • Hi, Take a look at one of my new videos, "watering." I think it's #52, under the "Bonsai-New Easy Method." It gives you different watering methods. Jerry

  • I'm really sorry if I sound up stuck and snotty, I really don't mean to. You said that the bonsai like the acidity? Acidity isn't really any good for a plant. Most plants flourish in a pH of 7 (nuetral) to about 7.5. There are few plants that need to be outside that range. Acidity kills a lot of plants. Like when pine needles fall, it kills a lot of grass, its because they are acidic and end up killing the ground cover. If I am wrong please notify me. I am honestly curious.

  • i have gotten some decoration moss that looks like sghanum moss and said on the bag it was good for bonsai. but i got it at micheals craft store, is it the same stuff?

  • Most certainly you can use wires if you wish. Just check them often to make sure they are not cutting into the tree. All of the usual bonsai techniques (except dealing with soil)can be used.

  • if i use this method could i also shape it with wiring?? i would love to have not only a bonsai tree but a beautiful one at that using wires would that work

  • I found mine at a Home Depot in their "Bonsai" section. Good luck. Jerry

  • Hi, I usually have problems with indoor bonsai due to the air conditioning situation. All of my bonsai are outdoor bonsai, buy we will occassionaly take one indoors for a few days, keeping a watchful eye on it, and then return it to the outdoors. My guess is that it would do better outdoors, but if brought indoors, perhaps a 2 or 3 day a week outdoors policy might help. Thanks for the other kind support. Wish I could be of more help here. Jerry

  • Sadly I dont have a place to put my juniper bonsai in a outside place! but it will be great to get a banyan tree sence I have a lil more experence with that kind of tree!but I cant find one!lol where did u get urs? here in florida many nursery people tell me is illegal to sell them sence they grow to be huge trees! maybe u can help me get one! thanks David.

  • Hi, Where do you live? Hot air heat, or air-conditioning? Or neither? Ficus is usually a good hardy tree for indoors. I would look into that.Ficus make good bonsai. Look at the Banyan tree video. That's a ficus. Jerry

  • I live in Florida! with real good air-conditioning!!! I realy like that Banyan tree! But I have a blue juniper bonsai! I just bought it and trim it! how do i tell if is doin good here indoors? Thanks for ur help! keep up tha good work even if those critick ppl dont like ur method!!!

  • Hi! Im new at this art! and i need some help! can you please tell me which plant will be better to grow a inside bonsai tree? thanks!

  • Hi i´m really interested in your method but i was wondering how much water does it need?

    Daily, once a week??

  • Hi, Right now, in the dead of the Florida summer, I am watering all my bonsai daily. Either I water them or it rains. Sometime both. You beed to look at and touch the sphagnum moss to see how much moisture it has. You should be able to pull it out of its pot and check the bottom of the plant. Don't let things dry out. The extra water will pass through and the moss will hold what it needs. But DON'T let it sit in water. Then you will be overwatering the plant.

  • Do you know if its better to use live sphagnum moss or dead which I'm guessing is what you're using? Or what the benefits are of using one or the other?

  • Never heard of using live sphagnum moss. I think it grows on bogs and that would mean it needs a water environment. I don't think it would work. I use unmilled sphagnum moss, which is NOT peat moss.

  • I was woundering, in which part of florida do you live? Also, I am going to get a Juniper and I want to grow it indoors. Is there any way to grow it without a grow light? And do you know any place where I can get a bonsai pot like Lowes or Wal-mart? I am living in North Florida for the summer but I go to Orlando for school. Thank you for your time.

  • I don't believe so. assume you mean dried algae, then mixed with water, which would give you a slimey mess. Better off with the sphagnum moss.

  • hey buddy! thanks for info, im looking to start small tree, i get about 3,4hrs sunlight a day in apt, and is humid during summer months, what type of tree shout i start with? not looking to grow one yet, just care for... thanks....

  • will green algea work instead of moss

  • As for the pronunciation, if you look it up in a dictionary, both forms are acceptable. It's lich Bach, the composer. In German it is pronounced "Bacchhhh-vey gutteral), while in English, many say "Bak" with a hard sound at the end. Likewise,in Dutch, Van Gogh is pronounced "Van Gochhhh-gutteral again" while in English many say "Van-Go".It depends on how much you are trying to impress your date or your boss.Anyway you say it, it's a great hobby and art form.

  • I won't comment on anything else... but please for the love of [Diety Name Here] learn to pronounce the word correctly.

    It's "Bone-Sigh"...

  • You are partially incorrect. The accepted english pronunciation is bon-sigh, the way you pronounce is also an accepted pronunciation though second. If you don't know of what you speak, you would be better off being quiet, as it only shows your level of ignorance. I do nothing for the "love of (Diety Name Here"), as I am not superstitious, don't believe in trolls, elves, angels, saints ogres, or other such scare tactics. Why don't you try to use your brain. I know it would be a novel experience.

  • yeah ok you just keep telling yourself that.

  • Troglodytic imbilcles like you obviously lack the ability to use your brain.m What a waste of humanity. Peolple like you are the cause of most of thr truobles the world suffers today. You wallow in your ignorance and are the laughing stock of thinking people. Let ke know if you want to debate the issue of dieties. Cowards usually don't debate, so I expect you to decline. Fool.

  • It takes you 3 months to formulate a reply. And, you can't manage to spell check it.

Look man if you want to have a serious discussion about bonsai that's fine. Please try to be respectful. I was not being at all disrespectful to you. If you want to discuss technique and horticulture we can do that.

I am not the ignorant neophyte you take me to be, so please show a little respect. You'll find you catch more flies with sugar than vinegar.

  • I did not post that reply 11 hours ago.I was in the hospital with my 28 year old son who had a valve replacement and an aorta replacement. (see next comment)

  • Before that I was dealing with my mother's death.THat comment was made months ago to someone else and it was not meant for you. I don't know what comment you are referring to. I did not intentionally disrespect you. Please email me or post your original comment. I have only recently learned how to check on comments. I have almost 100 videos on and I don't check them individually for comments. Not sure what this is all about, but would like to straighten it out amicably. Jerry

  • Actually ang3lfir3 you're making a total ass out of yourself. Just please do us all a favor and shut the heck up!! And maybe if you do that you're mommy and daddy might take you on a trip to Mehico or Fwance.

  • Hi, great videos! What type of juniper did you say this was? Have you ever seen or done a red-bud bonsai? Do have any suggestions for faster growing trees to use to make bonsai?

  • Hi, Thank you for the explanation. I am not a user of internet slang, and have extremely little knowledge of it. The world keeps changing--guess I need to follow it a little more closely. But could you please be a little more helpful? What does "pwnd.Imfao" mean in English? As a writer,("The Turk, Chess Automaton"; Sci-Fi; collectables; etc.), I am more used to the older style, But thank you for your support. And especially for taking the time to make a statement. Thanks again, Jerry

  • why would i need to try speak english when i know how to speak perfect english. The terms i used (pwnd. lmfao) are "internet slang" as some people define it. And by the way, I was congratulating you on your excelent comeback to theREALNESS712

  • pwnd. lmfao.

  • Try English, will you?

  • Do you have the intelligence to expand on your truncated thoughts (or lack thereof). Please list your credentials for making such an erudite critique. What do you do for a living? Did your parents intentionally bring you up to be a rude, pinheaded ass? Or did you pick it up on your own?

  • bonsai did not start in china it indeed started in Japan you watch too much TV

  • Bonsai started in China not in Japan! Thats fact!

  • Bonsai is a Japaneese word

  • "Bonsai" is indeed a Japanese (check your spelling) word. Its etymology has nothing to do with its sphere of origin.

  • Dear Gartne9, Thank you for the support. Thanks for watching the video, too! Bonsai7

  • You are in error. Please check the many references in books, encyclopedias, etc. It actually did start in China. I could understand your mistake, as it is a common one. I don't understand the ad hominem attack on my television watching habits. What does your malformed opinion on something of which you know nothing at all about, have to do with bonsai? Your lack of proper capitalization and punctuation reveal your intellect to be sorely lacking, and your education minimal, at best.

  • that soil you use...what is it called? I only understand moss but not the first word. Can I find that in a plant store?

  • Hi, It's called SPHAGNUM MOSS (UNMILLED). The milled sphagnum moss is called Peat Moss and is NOT used in this method. Be careful to get the right stuff. Because I use so much, I get mine on the internet. You can get "hobby bags" which are good for starting your first plant to see how it works. But if you want larger quantities, better to order the large bales.

  • well actually the first form of bonsai from china was called penjing and was focused more on small grasses and other plants and making minature landscapes with several trees and grasses then it moved to japan were they called it bonsai and they started using single trees in one planting rather than several good luck :]

  • Thanks!

  • bonsai is Japenese! 'bonsai' is a Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese word 'penzai' great video thanks!

  • Hi, Thanks for the positive comments. As for the pronunciation, if you look it up in a dictionary, both forms are acceptable.

  • Thanks for that informative update!

  • no problem!?

  • Hey great video. I like your style, very relaxed, and not so caught up on styles, an protocol.

I am in Illinois, and it caught my attention that you get your moss from wisconsin. As you said in a nursery a little pack is about 12$; way too expensive. Would you mind letting me know where I can get a bail of moss like yours, and the price?

  • Hi, I have just purchased three bales of sphagnym moss. I Googled "shagnum moss" and found "acehardwareoutletstore" which is where I ordered from. Even with the shipping, it was cheaper and faster than my local nurery which always promises to get them in on Thursday, but never does. Plus their costs were getting extreme. I was happy with the Ace Hardware people and I wpould use them again. The three bales with shipping ran about $64.

  • dude, your awesome. your funny and knowledgeable. I am subscribing to you. I am rather new to bonsai and I want to try it like you are doing.

  • what a minge

  • This method was discovered by the late Brian Batchelder who had a PBS TV show & book.

on his method. I have bonsai planted in it, some for over 20 years.

Batchelder died from sporotrichosis, a disease that infects the lungs from inhalation of spores from sphagnum moss, and through the skin when the person handling it wet has an open cut. I suggest

always wearing gloves when handling it.

His book and videos "New Horizons in Bonsai" may still be available used or at the library.

  • Hi,

I had heard that Brian died in a car accident in 1992. I got my copies of his tapes and book from WLRN in Miami. They may still have them available. That is very interesting about the sporotrichosis and measures to prevent it are heartily recommended. Thatns for the tips!

    Bonai 7

  • The details of his demise were not made well known. Watching the show on TV then, in the second season they ran repeats after 2-3 episodes, with no explanation. When he returned with new ones he explained the problem with his arm in a sling, and he told the story of what had happened with the

sporotrichosis. That one may not have been included in the videos sold by WLRN.

  • Hi, No, it was not in the video set. It is a wonderful series. Such a sad ending. Jerry

  • Great stuff. Nice to know its so easy.
