  • bobs version was better!!

  • England...

There's a lot of us here in the States that would like to come over, or come back...

See, it's great here in the States, don't get me wrong, except...well, you see...we sort of made the awful mistake of not educating our population, and so now...yeah, you've seen our leadership, Democrat and Republican, and those televangelists and the teen-pop and rap blasting out car windows...

We've suffered complete and utter Cultural Death...

T.S. Eliot rebooted in England--can we come, too?

  • @obiwanobiwan13 unfortunately my friend, culture in England has died a death a well. We have Labour and Tories, Soccer Players and Reality TV 'stars' and the same teen pop and rap. Ask the average englishman if he has read T.S. Elliot or Orwell et al, 80% will admit they have no idea who those people are, 15% will lie about having read them, and the remaining 5% will actually have culture and intelligence. Im sorry to be the bearer of such bad news.

  • @obiwanobiwan13 You shoulda thought of that in 1776. Too late now pal.

  • I wish i was a Englishman not a American pig.

  • The West Wing brought me here.

  • O9o99obx

  • AHHHHHHH!!! SIDESHOW BOB!!

  • AAAAH! SIDESHOW BOB!!!

  • I sent me here!

  • Makes you proud to be British!

  • Love it in the Chariots of Fire movie. Absolute classic. The British do it absolutely brilliant.

  • Ritchie Blackmore from Deep Purple sent me here.

  • sideshow bob sing it better

  • Greg House sent me here

  • I'm an American, I'm 20, I love heavy metal, but my dad introduced this to me at a young age. I love this stuff.

  • I wanted to listen to this because i watched cape feare...

  • @SherlockHamlet No - typical Americans trying to claim British traditions for themselves. An "Afghani" is not a person, it's the currency of Afghanistan... whose inhabitants are known as, "Afghans." It really doesn't work when the opera is called the "HMS Pinafore" - one might reasonably assume that the "Her Majesty's Ship" gives strong connotations of a purely British entitlement!

  • @SherlockHamlet Way to ruin a song by inserting American into it.

  • @SherlockHamlet Interestingly, you speak truer than you know. When your country wanted to Americanize this play, and change the title to "the U.S.S. Pinafore", Gilbert actually riposted by writing the following lyrics: He is American!

Though he himself has said it,

'Tis not much to his credit,

    That he is American.

For he might have been a Dutchman,

An Irish, Scotch or such man,

    Or perhaps an Englishman!

    But in spite of hanky-panky,

    He remains a true-born Yankee,

    A cute American.

  • @AliceTRoyal That version is shit

  • @AliceTRoyal Um. It's supposed to be sarcastic.

  • Comment removed

  • That's what it's all about.

England. No Britain, no British person, I'm an Englishman. I'm not Scottish, I'm not Welsh, I'm not Irish, I'm fucking ENGLISH.

  • a bit of fry and laurie sent me here, not sideshow bob.. sorry.

  • Sideshow Bob FTW!

  • I will send you to heaven Bart Simpson before I send you to hell.

  • My enjoyment of the work of Gilbert And Sullivan brought me here....

  • 8 people are French

  • I was just watching cape fear on AMC, went to watch the Simpsons' cape fear episode then started searching this song hahaha

  • Sideshow Bob bought me here!

  • Cheeseeatingsurrendermonkey = Frenchman

  • how the hell can you dislike this?

  • thumbs up if Sideshow bob sent you here!

  • @Tigerwyld Emily Proctor on West Wing for me

  • Gilbert and Sullivan were poking fun at pathetic nationalistic sensitivities a century ago.

Nowadays, the Mexican ambassador throws a hissy fit over one (bad, I'll admit) joke on Top Gear and the fucking "progressive" comedians write 100 articles in the Guardian backing the cunt.

Being aware and making fun of nationalistic stereotypes is part of being a member of the international community. If we have forgotten this nearly a century afterwards, what hope is there for us?

  • @vulnerabledonkey Calm down.

  • I am a proud Englishman

  • Dr. House Rules!

  • @arxidamos13

Where did that come from? whats house got to do with it?

  • The West Wing brought me here! Season Two, Episode Five: "And It's Surely to their Credit."

  • @HGM1138

Got the exact same inspiration ;)

  • its a musical plain and simple

  • I remain an Englishman

  • I remain an Englishman!

  • ..This should be the 2014 world cup anthem.!

  • @pyglett

Only if Kelsey Grammer (Sideshow Bob on the Simpsons; he sang this song in one classic episode) sings it; I refuse to accept it any other way.

  • For he himself has said it

And it's greatly to his credit

    That he is an Englishman

Or he might have been a Russian

A French or Turk or Prussian

    Or perhaps Italian

And in spite of all temptations

    To belong to other nations

    He remains an Englishman

  • As an Englishman in another country it makes me proud to say " I remain an English Man"

  • @WatchinFredsBoyz So how are you handling all the temptations to belong to other nations?

  • The moral of the story? Remain an Englishman :P

  • Hehe, prussian. :)

  • and why people choose todays crap over this ill never know

  • @TheEDBShow

I have wondered that for years.

  • I like this song very much.

  • Or perhaps an ulsterman

  • also features in "Chariots of Fire" - Harold Abrahams' love of Gulbert & Sullivan -

  • If there ever was a time that one could be proud to be British, this reminds me of it.

  • @DavidDavingstonshire Are you British or Anglo-Saxon. Your name appears to be Anglo-Saxon, not British. SPURN THE MUSE!!

  • @spurnthemuse

I was joking. Britain is a shithole. Small island, small gene pool. PUT A DONK ON IT!!

  • @DavidDavingstonshire Bein English has nothin to do with location. It means bein Anglo Saxon, wherever one might find oneself to be. SPURN THE MUSE!!

  • @DavidDavingstonshire You goin to have to explain "donk" to me. Onliest one I ken of is from that movin picture, about the crocodile man. SPURN THE MUSE!!

  • @DavidDavingstonshire Look around the world, almsot all of the good nations are ex-British colonies.

  • @March272010 sure kenya, bagladesh, india, egypt, sudan......... very powerful and rich british heritage

  • @rata9009 agreed, and many other examples like Nigeria. But it still is true that almost all of the good countries are ex-British colonies. I am not supporting the idea of conquering other people but of Parlimentary Democracy and other good British ideas.

  • @March272010 yes, britain was extremely revolutionary in the process of built and growth of capitalism. after the great depresion of 1873, britain became an imperialist and reactionary nation as most northern european ones

  • @rata9009 Stil better than the rest were.

  • @March272010 Ay, we've still got the biggest empire, or commonwealth, whatever...

  • @rata9009Australia, canada and at one point the east coast of the United States!

  • @Hindenburg12886 where white population became dominant, and was not expelled in the 2nd postwar, things went rite. on the countries where white settlers were expelled or werent just significant enough, well, just look kenya, somalia, ghana.... Eventhough i must say uk was the best colonial empire

  • @March272010 Yeah, but by that logic England is only good because it was ruled by scandinavians

  • @Pinkboy67 That is too simplistic a view of English history, England has not been ruled by Scandinavians for almost 1000 years. Most original Scandinavian ideas and culture over time were replaced or altered between then and 200 years ago. There is not a direct link between scandanavian ideas/culture and the ideas of 200 years ago in England. There is a direct link between good British ideas from 200 years ago and the use of those ideas today. Again Im not supporting the conquest of other people

  • hugh laurie singing better this song

  • The song is better on the Simpsons Episode Cape Feare

  • @johnny2956 Yeah, if you are not one of us, it is. SPURN THE MUSE!!

  • Sideshow bob is better than this

  • @tuber749

haha last sundays simspons episode made me search for this.

  • @Rac665 it is simpsons

  • All of the people spewing hate speech on this comment section can go to hell, your ruining Pinafore for the rest of us. SHUT UP and enjoy the music!

  • Oneanddoneself it's Prussian not Proosian, as in someone from Prussia!

  • The best version, by far

  • Gilbert and Sullivan kicks ass.

  • yet you all worship american television and movies...you people are retarded

  • @007brush

    That's a bit of a sweeping generalization.

  • SIMPSONS DID IT! SIMPSONS DID IT!

  • @ThemanonlyknownasTom (South Park ) Episode Simpsons Did it

  • DR HOUSE !!

  • my skool is doing this play. im in it yay

  • Las Malvinas back! British colonialists!

  • Your ancestors the Spanish were colonialists themselves. And any civilised person would prefer British rule to them!.

  • @jackmoncarsz

    muggins

  • @jackmoncarsz

To some point - yes, but proud Brits are not gods, don't forget about murders they commit.

  • @StG45m ...at the behest of the mixed royal / rothschild spawn witches and masons servants of the jesuit general, who have occupied the seats of power. SPURN THE MUSE!!

  • @MaximTendu xD i absolutely agree with you

  • @MaximTendu well kelsey grammar has an incredible voice and who knew he could sing haha

  • yeah i loved this song on the simpsons

  • @MaximTendu lol i totaly agree!!! thumbs up sideshow bob is the reason i like this song!!!

  • @MaximTendu When Sideshow Bob sings it, he leaves out "Englishman" and there is a US flag there.

  • @MaximTendu No way.. Huge Larie... in House....

  • @3dmoddeler Sideshow Bob Vs Hugh Laurie : who is the greatest Englishman ? Come on people, whaddaya think of that ? :-)

  • @MaximTendu I agree, he had the perfect voice for this song!

  • @MaximTendu is there a video where i can hear that ?

  • @evilgart just look for the simpsons' episode called "Cape Feare". Enjoy!

  • @MaximTendu and who make Sideshow Bob voice?

  • @animesith999 Kelsey Grammar.

  • It was good, but Kelsey Grammer does it WAY better.

  • Makes me want to go out and conquer half the world

  • You're an American. Havent you done that already?

  • Personally, no. But I see your point.

  • ;)

Forgot to add the smiley face, it was more of a Tongue-in-cheek comment.

  • No worries. So was mine.

  • Oh come now people! Its a satire! Its not about Churchill and its certainly not meant to be taken seriously... A French or Turk or Proo-oosian.. seriously.... HMS Pinafore poked fun at the prevailing Victorian Jingoism and Nationalism decades before Churchill got his first caning at Harrow.

    Its satire. Not Churchill.

Or perhaps Eye-ta-lian... haha! seriously, you people need to get yourselves a sense of humour.

  • @jonewer Agreed. And one of the aspects of jest here is that at this time, 1878?, England was at the top of the list in empire, power, prestige, and, I suspect, economy; no Englishman would have wanted to be of any other nation. Mr. Gilbert had a very keen sense of humor and razor sharp satire. And I wonder if he could have found any better composer for his librettos than Sir Sullivan. The texts and the music are simply awesome!

  • I'm not English but i can understand why do english people feel so proud of this song, it's really inspiring, and even though it wasn't written for Churchill i believe that if there is a suitable english to dedicate it, it's obviously him.

  • It makes me proud to be British...if I was British....

  • You used to be ;)

  • simply beautiful

but it reminds me of all the glory the British Empire lost...

  • Nonesense. There is so much to be proud of today.

  • yeah, like... um... well, you're not Canada, that has to count for something.

seriously, that healthcare system bankrupted you guys.

  • Hugh. :)

  • It is. He has a band as well as acting, and look how good he is at piano and guitar - clearly a seriously musical guy. wish i could play instruments like that.

    Hugh Laurie is my god

  • Yeah, I was really surprised at Dr. House's rendition in the Fall 2009 season opener of House! A bit incongruous while he was giving a urine sample, but a pretty damn good rendition nonetheless, great baritone, hope it was really him singing.

  • I like Kelsey Grammar's version better

  • it would rock if he did the whole song

  • So do I!

  • @Roxxxxxxxbottttter Kelsey Grammer*

I will not have Frasier's name spelt incorrectly.

  • House =D

  • The song is not about Churchill; but at a special performance that he attended the actors sang this song in honor and dedication to Winston Churchill.

Throughout the years it became know as his song.

  • it was wriiten a great deal of time BEFORE Churchill

  • splint480 is right, in 1878 churchill was in a boarding school

  • i hope u ppl are kidding about the song being about winston churchill cos ur WRONG!! this play was written and premiered in 1878 and churchill was born in 1874 making him 4 years old when the play was made so its pretty impossible for the song to be about him!!

    idiots

  • just bob could it better ! nice

  • my school was named after Sir Winston. He will always live on.

  • Yes elfbadger, sideshow Bob did an excellent job didnt he !

  • reminds me of Churchill

  • i think i would enjoy this even more if i were an englishman

  • A fantastic piece...

  • dude try to open your persective on music

  • that he is an englishman!

for he might have been a roosian,

a french, or turk, OR AMERICAN (haha),

    or perhaps itali-an!

    all.

    or perhaps itali-an!

but in spite of all temptations

    to belong to other nations,

    he remains an englishman!

    HE REMAINS AN ENGLISHMAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!!!!!

  • @intoantics turk or Proosian

  • @intoantics Or perhaps an ulster man

  • @j1315p Or perhaps Italian

  • @intoantics "A French or Turk or Prussian"

  • My Grandad Died on Monday, He loved this stuff :(

    RIP GRANDAD

  • Is that John Reed's voice ?

  • So when this was written Britannia did rule the waves. These guys are clever and skilled and fun.Intellectual without being obvious. Make fun, clever and correct observations about the human condition. If you try hard, your works may be around in a hundred years so people can do little critiques om YouTube about them.

  • Rossipotamus, William S. Gilbert was happily married to Lucy Agnes Turner to whom he often wrote affectionately, they adopted a daughter Nancy McIntosh and he drowned in 1911 trying to save a another young woman. Arthur Sullivan had many love affairs, documented by hundreds of love letters from sisters Rachel and Louise Scott Russell, plus Mary "Fanny" Ronalds plus any number of other women - he even seems to have made notes of his sexual acts with them.

  • Rossipotamus, G&S were knighted by King Edward VII and Queen Victoria respectively. This shows that a great number of knowledgable people did not share your belief that G&S were homosexuals. Congratulations Rossipotamus on making the stupidest post here.

  • My interpretation of this jolly song is that which informs most of the work of Gilbert and Sullivan. I believe that they were keenly aware of the absurdities of Victorian Britain and its empire, and pointed them out for the amusement of people able to laugh at themselves. No man can choose his birth, but still we take an otiose pride. Look at the nationalistic French, Spanish, Americans - we're all the same, and this is what G&S in their topsy-turvy world tried to say. Still, love their music.

  • Why'd you say that my Argentinian friend?

  • cause we own the best part of south america :)
