There's a lot of us here in the States that would like to come over, or come back...
See, it's great here in the States, don't get me wrong, except...well, you see...we sort of made the awful mistake of not educating our population, and so now...yeah, you've seen our leadership, Democrat and Republican, and those televangelists and the teen-pop and rap blasting out car windows...
We've suffered complete and utter Cultural Death...
T.S. Eliot rebooted in England--can we come, too?
@obiwanobiwan13 unfortunately my friend, culture in England has died a death a well. We have Labour and Tories, Soccer Players and Reality TV 'stars' and the same teen pop and rap. Ask the average englishman if he has read T.S. Elliot or Orwell et al, 80% will admit they have no idea who those people are, 15% will lie about having read them, and the remaining 5% will actually have culture and intelligence. Im sorry to be the bearer of such bad news.
@SherlockHamlet No - typical Americans trying to claim British traditions for themselves. An "Afghani" is not a person, it's the currency of Afghanistan... whose inhabitants are known as, "Afghans." It really doesn't work when the opera is called the "HMS Pinafore" - one might reasonably assume that the "Her Majesty's Ship" gives strong connotations of a purely British entitlement!
@SherlockHamlet Interestingly, you speak truer than you know. When your country wanted to Americanize this play, and change the title to "the U.S.S. Pinafore", Gilbert actually riposted by writing the following lyrics: He is American!
Gilbert and Sullivan were poking fun at pathetic nationalistic sensitivities a century ago.
Nowadays, the Mexican ambassador throws a hissy fit over one (bad, I'll admit) joke on Top Gear and the fucking "progressive" comedians write 100 articles in the Guardian backing the cunt.
Being aware and making fun of nationalistic stereotypes is part of being a member of the international community. If we have forgotten this nearly a century afterwards, what hope is there for us?

@March272010 yes, britain was extremely revolutionary in the process of built and growth of capitalism. after the great depresion of 1873, britain became an imperialist and reactionary nation as most northern european ones

@Pinkboy67 That is too simplistic a view of English history, England has not been ruled by Scandinavians for almost 1000 years. Most original Scandinavian ideas and culture over time were replaced or altered between then and 200 years ago. There is not a direct link between scandanavian ideas/culture and the ideas of 200 years ago in England. There is a direct link between good British ideas from 200 years ago and the use of those ideas today. Again Im not supporting the conquest of other people

And one of the aspects of jest here is that at this time, 1878?, England was at the top of the list in empire, power, prestige, and, I suspect, economy; no Englishman would have wanted to be of any other nation. Mr. Gilbert had a very keen sense of humor and razor sharp satire. And I wonder if he could have found any better composer for his librettos than Sir Sullivan. The texts and the music are simply awesome!

Weirdly, I've only ever heard this on American tv shows (The West Wing and the Simpsons), and this is the first time I've heard this song in full. I think it's a little brash and colonial for our taste these days.
Don't get all angry about how we should "f*** England". This is clearly in satire. They're mocking nationalism and patriotism, both of which are idiotic.
So when this was written Britannia did rule the waves. These guys are clever and skilled and fun.Intellectual without being obvious. Make fun, clever and correct observations about the human condition. If you try hard, your works may be around in a hundred years so people can do little critiques om YouTube about them.
Rossipotamus, William S. Gilbert was happily married to Lucy Agnes Turner to whom he often wrote affectionately, they adopted a daughter Nancy McIntosh and he drowned in 1911 trying to save a another young woman. Arthur Sullivan had many love affairs, documented by hundreds of love letters from sisters Rachel and Louise Scott Russell, plus Mary "Fanny" Ronalds plus any number of other women - he even seems to have made notes of his sexual acts with them.
Rossipotamus, G&S were knighted by King Edward VII and Queen Victoria respectively. This shows that a great number of knowledgable people did not share your belief that G&S were homosexuals. Congratulations Rossipotamus on making the stupidest post here.
My interpretation of this jolly song is that which informs most of the work of Gilbert and Sullivan. I believe that they were keenly aware of the absurdities of Victorian Britain and its empire, and pointed them out for the amusement of people able to laugh at themselves. No man can choose his birth, but still we take an otiose pride. Look at the nationalistic French, Spanish, Americans - we're all the same, and this is what G&S in their topsy-turvy world tried to say. Still, love their music.
bobs version was better!!

So when this was written Britannia did rule the waves. These guys are clever and skilled and fun.Intellectual without being obvious. Make fun, clever and correct observations about the human condition. If you try hard, your works may be around in a hundred years so people can do little critiques om YouTube about them.

When I first listened to this song, I felt gay for having done so. I also believe that Gilbert and Sullivan are gay.
