In many cases it's not about the pageant but about the exposure. Singers/dancers need to be seen. So this is a way to do it. Much better than whacking cars with umbrellas.

Interview plus onstage question count for 25% of points, where talent counts for 35%. You can't win a pageant with a bad interview, or else the judges won't want to score you high for your talent.

Miss Indiana did have the best talent, but she was soo stuck up that when she won the Miss Indiana Pageant none of the other contestants liked her and wouldnt even congratulate her. I guess she does have the right to be stuck up, but its not an image Miss America should have. I have a feeling Miss California is just like her. Miss Michigan was the right choice

Im a pageant girl and i cant tell you how much i HATE THE MISS AMERICA SYSTEM, they need to take a note from the miss universe organisation and get eith the times.

I think a talent is good but it shouldnt go towards the final scoring, or be part of the final show. Evening wera,bikini anf final question is fine.GET WITH IT MISS AMERICA.

These girls don't seem really talented to me at all. I'm sorry. I'm a huge fan of Miss America and there have been some phenomenal performances. The best ever to me vocally was Suzette Charles' 1984b. Her vocals were stellar! Rita Ng played the piano in 2001 I believe and was fantastic as well. Not a great group talent-wise, but Miss Michigan is beyond hot. Vanessa Williams was like that when she won. Not the best talent they'd seen, but hit the other categories. Counts for something.

The jewel song was completely horrid. How in the world can you study voice for '12 years' and mess up a song that badly? I can understand cracking on notes when belting but not when singing in a classical manner!

i have to agree, its obvious that she has the fundamental technique for this and she does have a relatively nice voice, but this was a bit butchered. The cracking aside (i know miss michigan/america personally, i know how scary it can be), her french diction is pretty bad, and it sounds like shes not listening to the accompaniament at all (which is an aweful synthetic one at that), shes not with the 'orchestra' at all.

i went to high school with Kirsten, shes actually a very fine lyric coloratura with a marvelous light soubrette voice. She sang Adelle's laughing aria from Fledermaus at the miss michigan pageant, but apparently a former miss America sang that at the miss america pageant, and all former winners' stuff is off limits for a period, apparently.

i saw kirsten perform "Over the Rainbow" at her homecoming celebration of her win in Michigan. Since she was less nervous, the talent was amazing and sounded much better then at Miss America. After hearing her in person, she is a worthy Miss America!

Even thought Michigan's notes were a little off key she deserved to win! She was chosen 1st to perform, w/ no warning. That would make anyones voice shakey and off key.

I dont know why everyone thinks Washington should have won. Her personality is quite annoying, and i dont know how anyone would be able to sit through and interview w/ her.

Gretchen Carlson became the 1st classical violinist to win at Ms America with Sarazat's Zigeunerweisen (she nails it), and in 99, Ms Pa, Susan Spafford performed Grazyna Bacewicz's Police Caprice. Both are excellent & were crowd pleasers final night. Very enjoyable to watch- I highly rcommend.

Talent is only one portion of the competition. While Kirsten did not sing that night as well as she could have, the judges were obviously looking at more than talent for Miss America. Miss America rarely has an opportunity to use her talent throughout her year, however, she does spend her year speaking in public and working as a role model for young women. I think the judges did a wonderful job and all you have to do is see one of her interviews and you'll understand why the judges chose her.

I've seen some other videos of her in interviews and things like that. She seems like a really strong, confident, and well spoken woman. But I don't think her singing is as great as she really is (but I'm glad she didn't do opera).
