If someone asked me to pray with them on their deathbed, and if I was an atheist/agnostic, I would rather be honest and decline in a polite way.
If they're scared of death, it's because they didn't know how to live. You can wish them a peaceful end and help to make them comfortable, but the real sad thing is that they waited until the last minute to try and come to terms with life.

If making them believe that you are praying with them is the one thing that can give them that little bit of comfort then I'd be happy to oblige. I agree with you, I would behave in the same way, not only, but on my death bed, I will have a death bed conversion to any religion if it makes my loved ones happier for the rest of their lives, it has no meaning to me, so I don't gain or loose anything.

I think what drives me the craziest is people who think that by jumping through all the "religious hoops," that that automatically means they've got it made. I would also say that, hmm, well, what really drives me nuts about some Christians, is that they stop thinking for themselves, accept whatever their religious leaders tell them, and justify even the most despicable acts, i.e. child abuse in the church. So, I'm with Ghandi. I think the teachings of Jesus are remarkable, especially in the fact that they have so many layers of meaning. You can read them over and over and still discover more.

But when it comes to the Church which acts like a major corporation, I am terribly sad. Yes, it would be amazing if the shit didn't exist-the politics, greed, cover-ups, lies, etc. etc. etc. But, it just ain't so. The saddest part perhaps is the fact that the liturgy of the church can be so unbelievable beautiful when you consider the art, the music, the liturgical drama if you will. Unfortunately it doesn't reflect what is always going on behind the scenes.

Like I say here: I'm an atheist, I can't pray, but I can pretend and if it helps that person's peace of mind as they are dying then I think it's a good thing to do. What else can you do?
