Exactly right, and perfectly expressed. The 'moving away' part resonated w/ me, as did the insights into bullies (they're invariably cowards--- INVARIABLY). I escaped to the Pacific Northwest from an isolated desert town where alcoholism was endemic, and anyone even gay-friendly lived in fear. IT GOT BETTER when I found a new life, and a new family. Bless you, Jill, for adding your own voice to the chorus.
