  • master...

  • Great Video... But you forgot to show Not to overlap the horizontal and vertical joints...otherwise you will get get a buldge in the joint..otherwise it's a great video...

  • I'm about to do a job in my attic next week and I'm going to use this technique. Thanks for educating me.

  • Laurier completely changed taping for me. I used to get good results, but it took twice the time, and it was a dreaded job. Now I get great results in half the time, and virtually no sanding. I cannot thank you enough Laurier!

  • Or you could just use a machine you caveman

  • I have a question,are you a homosexual?

  • Thank you! Everyone might have different tools and techniques but we all get the same results. The goal is to have a happy client.

  • Why would you use a small knife? It's too slow bc you cant load up as much mud and you can fill the whole rebate quicker with a big knife/trowel. Good job dude

  • great technique! thanks!!

  • @iceman168888 Your welcome! I wish you success.

  • nice work but why don't u use a 4" knife to apply the mud and an 8" to wipe it out? That big hawk applies more mud than necessary and that leads to more sanding.

  • @jyambor I don't sand at all between coats. It doesn't matter what you use for tools as long as it is clean and you end up with the same results as someone who uses a trowel to tape drywall.

  • Thanks for this level of detail and technique. As someone who is learning, you have raised the bar for me!

  • @MrNSBianchi Thank you for your feedback. I'm glad I could help.

  • There are many different tools and ways to achieve your drywall taping goals. As long as the end product is smooth and flat, it doesn't matter how you do it.

  • your mud is too hard for taping ,wiping mud that hard will kill ur tricep, and also use 6;or 8 inch knife to wipe tape

    pro drwall taper

  • great video what type of Putty is the best to use?

  • @coreysandi1 It doesn't really matter what drywall compound you use. I personally use CGC Bege or White.

  • any brand you recoment of trowel ? thanks.

  • @ariel1422 I personally use Marshaltown trowels and Gold Blatt trowels.

  • @drywallgall thanks

  • Thank you!

  • Thanks alot! The best drywall video on YouTube.

  • @RominP27 Thank you!

  • @drywallgall

I did not know what a butt joint and a taper joint was, thanks. However you should had posted your 2nd and 3rd coat because it is very hard to imagine the finish on the butt joint.

I guess it is ok, at least you made your valid points about the tape and butt joint. Keep it up!

  • is that the same tools to apply stucco for walls?

  • @klickkzam I personally don't do stucco but my drywall taper friends do use the same tools to do their stucco jobs.

  • @klickkzam I personally don't do stucco but my drywall taper friends do use the same tools to apply stucco.

  • Are you also hanging drywall or just finishing. Reason I ask is my back is wore out an Id rather not push my back anymore than I have to. I have to much pride to just lay down because of my back.. So Im just trying to find ways to work smarter not harder.

  • @plestes I do install drywall once in a while but I use a drywall panel lift now.

There is no more breaking my back. I only use quickset on small jobs that I can complete in one day.

I price my jobs at $35.00 per hour but I get alot done in an hour. Picking up materials and travelling time is also added to the estimate.

  • Thanks for taking time to answer. My questions . I'm a maintenance tech by trade. an I'm a little rusty. with drywall. Most drywall mud Iv ever used had a 24h dry time.quickset not as much. 20 min quickset you think is best to stay with. People seem to like to put there 2cents in an judge how I do things. Been doing Maintenance last 12 years. where Iv always been paid hourly. Can you give me any info on pricing jobs. Finishing

  • I was always showed to let the mud under the tape to dry before putting top coat. is there any reason why or why not I would wait or not

  • @plestes Every coat needs to dry before the next coat is applied otherwise the mud will lift the tape and possibly cause a bubble to happen.

  • @plestes if u drytape it which he is doing in this video u can coat it

  • Good job! I'm a taper at 27.. been taping since 2000... You did a fantasic job.

  • @BlackberryCash Thank you very much. I enjoy hearing from the pros.

  • why have you got 2 butt joints 800 apart in a 3 meter room? nice taping by the way but horrible fixing. also why are you using top coat for taping in?

  • @murfdogga I'm not the one who installed the drywall but I am the one who has to tape and coat what is presented to me, I use the same drywall compound for taping as I do for second coat and finish coat.

  • @drywallgall

We use a base coat for taping in and second coating in Australia , its a rougher compound with more cement through it to bed in the tape and then create a more durable finish with the second coat. We use a smooth finer plaster top coat for finishing.

  • @murfdogga I just learned something new. Thank you.

  • why have you got 2 butt joints 800 apart in a 3 meter room? nice taping by the way but horrible fixing.

  • Nice

  • @RON69METS Thank you!

  • @drywallgall.... If you wanted to use 3 different taping knifes, we say 1st knife for 1st coat, 2nd size for second coat, and 3rd knife for finish coat, but do you no the knife sizes they recommend, if so could you tell me please

    Cheers mate

  • @royzer79 I use a 4"x12" trowel for all of my coats on drywall joints.

  • @drywallgall how many coats in general do you give it, 1st coat to bed tape, 2nd coat to cover tape, and 3rd coat which really is finish coat would I be correct in that. Great video mate, look forward to your reply ...

  • @royzer79 You have it. It is exactly that. First coat to glue the tape down, 2nd coat to hide it and finish coat to smooth it out to a level of perfection before sanding. Thank you for posting. You seem to understand the procedure.

  • I was trained using a bazooka, boxes and all the more "modern" tools of the trade... but you hawk guys rock that thing! I remember the first time I saw a guy 3 scaffolds up using a hawk and trowel to do a Spanish ceiling, just awesome.

  • @cyclesomewhere The bazooka and boxes make you very quick and efficient at your trade. I respect the people who know how to use them well. I do a lot of small jobs so I just hand tape and coat. I get a feeling of satisfaction when I complete a project. Thank you for your comment.

  • use mesh tape its way easier

  • @afgzz4life I was trained on paper tape. It doesn't really matter which one you use as long as your client is happy with the finished job.

  • yeah, if you're gonna fix something that involves construction get a professional to do it cause if you don't, you're just gonna shit things up.

  • @d2cuadrados In some cases it is easier to hire a pro.

  • who tapes with a fucking trowel. 6" knife nugga

  • @NARtotheNAR I know drywall tapers who tape with a 6" knife and some who tape with an 8", 10" ,12" knife and many more who tape with a trowel. We all agree that it doesn't matter what tools you use as long as the finish product makes the client happy . Making the client happy is the most important job in drywall taping.

  • @NARtotheNAR What is a nugga?

  • Nice job.

Do you use Bazooka tapers and finishing boxes etc??

I rocked and taped my 1200 SF house starting out with zero experience. I decided to rent the bazooka tube, corner tool and finishing boxes about halfway through. I couldn't believe how easy and fast they were to use!

  • @flanksteak2 I personally don't use a bazooka but if it works for you and you had the opportunity to rent one ,that is great. There are many ways to achieve your drywall taping goals and do a good job. I'm happy that you found a way that works for you.

  • @drywallgall It made the work less physically demanding by about 1/3rd and was more curious why tapers don't embrace such tools in order to save their own muscles, tendons and ligaments.

The very first in my life that I ever hurt my back was standing back up while smoothing a drywall seam.

  • Hi, what do you do in the top inside corner point where the3 pieces of tape come together? (The tape in the corner of the two walls, and the wall and the ceiling and the other wall and ceiling)

  • @Mr4and20 On the inside corner, I , for the second coat do the corner on the ceiling with my 4" drywall knife then the corner on the wall that butts up to it and then the corner horizontally on the other wall. I then wait until it is dry and for the finish coat do all the corners that are missing. These instructions are all on a basement drywall dvd with all of the steps from the tape coat to the second coat and the finish coat that we sell for $30.00.

  • i think i have seen all of your video but no one about technnique for ceiling??

it's the part of the job i fear the most....

    thanks for your answer

  • @elpatenteu Drywall taping the ceilings is the same as the walls. What my you-tube channel is missing is the second coat and finish coat and cornerbead coating the basement drywall. I sell the complete set for $30.00. Don't be afraid of ceilings since they are very similar as the walls.

  • what do you tink about mesh tape?

    you never us it?

i have a job to do and im'thinking about using this but when i see you and your technnique maybee i using paper tape....

it's wonderful to see you,it's seem so easy!!

  • @elpatenteu Thank you. I'm happy to share my techniques with you. I use paper tape only. I find paper is sronger and less expensive than mesh tape as long as you have enough mud behind the paper so that you don't get the paper bubbling up. The drywall compound is your glue for paper tape.

  • All I can say is WOW. I told my husband I didn't know drywall could be poetry in motion. "When I mud I feel His pleasure." (stealing from eric Lidell of Chariots of Fire) As I was mudding I was feeling very glad you were not there to see it!! But thanks for being a great teacher.

  • @RCGagain Thank you very much! In my experience woman learn my trade easier than men. I don't know why. I believe that you will be successful in doing a nice job with your drywall projects. I have a complete dvd for sale which is all of the coats on basement drywall taping. Your comment shows your artistic side. Thanks again.

  • u pass the knife too many times to get smoot and the tool kind of big i seen better

  • @gringo90100 You are right. I do know drywall tapers who are much better than me. I just like showing people what I enjoy doing so much.

  • Awesome video. Thanks for putting this up!

  • @PacificShot327 Thank you for posting your comment.

  • i would like to apologize for my earlier sarcasm, it is obvious you are truly a master of your trade. I lead a crew for a company that is notorious for cutting corners. In my world, production trumps quality. It is easy to lose the sense of pride that comes from turning out quality work. Keep up the good work.

  • @dawnyel79 Thank you for commenting! I do enjoy hearing from pros. 25 years ago when I began this trade, I was also a production taper but now that I have been self employed, quality takes priority. I am seldom asked to even do a prime check. I am very proud about how people talk about my work. Thanks again!

  • Thanks for the response. Also what type of compound did you use ready mix or did you mix it yourself from one of the bag types. Thanks again

  • @keithcase7 I use ready mixed compound called CGC Biege from a plastic lined box most of the time but I do have experience with pouder type mud that you mix with water. It depends on the size of the job at hand and whether or not more than one coat can be done in a day. Thanks for asking questions. I'm happy to help.

  • Great video. What size trowel are you using and is it a curved trowel? Also do you use different sizes depending on the job. Thanks

  • @keithcase7 Thank you! I use flat trowels. They are both stainless steel and one of them is 4 1/2"x 12" and the other is 5"x 16". My videos will show you how they are used. Enjoy!

  • good hell...i hope this guy gets paid by the hour.

  • @dawnyel79 I get paid piecework and by the hour. I get paid to stay clean so I hand tape. I only use a mudbox for speed on new houses. You must be a pro drywall taper. Thanks for commenting.

  • Great video. I found it difficult to do the butt joints the way you do; I get the mud too thick under the tape in places, then have to use a lot more mud to feather it out & hide the hump afterwards. Mesh tape & sheetrock 90 mud is a lot easier but cracks easier than paper. I think a banjo would be great since it puts a thin controlled amount of mud under the tape. In the mean time I run a strip of paper through a bucket of thinned mud & put it on the joint.

  • @880274d Thank you! It really sounds like you are very familiar about the art of taping drywall. With a pail, you made yourself a mudbox to put the mud right on the tape for you. That is a faster way to tape but a little more mess to deal with. You are also right about the difference between papr and mesh tape. Paper is stronger but mesh lets mud go through so that people don't get bubbled up tape. You know as well as I do that mud is your glue for paper tape. I'm happy to here from you.

  • @drywallgall I'm a long way from replicating your skill, but I make up for some of it with science. I find there is a lot of chemistry and physics involved in drywall taping.

  • @880274d I agree. Thanks for commenting. I wish you success in your drywall taping prjects.

  • Thanks! This video helped a lot - first time trying for me. Thanks again.

  • @Jamsire Thank you! I'm happy to help.

  • LMAO @ this guy's stone age tools

  • @ELQUITO12 I'm sorry that I don't understand what you mean by stone age tools.

  • i dont know anything about mudding, except for the fact that im not good at it. But, from this video, you can tell he's a pro at it. I've already seen the other joker videos and can tell the difference

  • @Midnighttinting808 Thank you! I hope that you are entertained by my videos.

  • Everyone has different ways of doing this trade and acheiving the same quality results. As you can see, I use paper tape for the whole job. Thanks for commenting.

  • people use paper tape to stop it cracking . we use papertape (here in scotland uk)for internals and above doors , because with the doors getting closed the gyproc tends to crack at the joins above the doors when fiber tape is used. every thing eles we fiber tape .

  • How do I find your vids on eBay??

  • @Kb2783 You can just type in my name or go to my website and use the link that is on the first page.

  • How busy do you stay Laurier? Do you ever go without work? Are you well known in your area??

  • @Kb2783 I stay as buisy as I like to. I go without work if I choose to be out camping and fishing. I don't want my income to exceed $30,000 a year. I don't have to charge taxes like gst or hst. If you go into my small town and use my first name, people will know who I am and some may even have my number.

  • Excellent Tutorial Video, I've done a lot of drywall, it's guys like this that everyone should try to mirror.

  • @327nlake Thank you very much. Your comment is much appreciated.

  • @327nlake Thank you. But you know as well as I do that there's more than one way to do this type of work.

  • @drywallgall Of course, everyone has their own style but fundamentally it comes down to holding the correct amount of material on your knife, how many/few times you place your tool on the wall, and how efficient you are with a prime result requiring less work in the end. If i had the shoulders and was running 8 miles of seams I might carry a banjo but I'm just a painter :) nice wok dude!!

  • @327nlake Thank you! You seem to have a good understanding of my trade. Banjos are faster but my instructions are more for a DIY person.

  • @drywallgall Do you have much new construction work up there ? (I'm in Missouri)... the work I get is painting rentals for Management companies and doing remodel projects that both require having to know the basics of dry walling..over the years I've hung my share. Amazingly in this economy I'm waiting to get confirmation on 20 specs and 10 customs from a local builder to paint. Not sure who exactly they're selling these new houses to but you don't hear me complaining :)

  • @327nlake There are houses being built by the hundreds in my area. I live in the Ottawa, Ontario area. There is lots of work here too.I hope that you get the jobs that you are looking at. I wish you success.

  • This guy is amazing. Best Drywall Tutorials I have seen.

Nice job. Keep up the Videos.

  • @Ivansky1 I'll do my best. Thank you!

  • I do count on people hiring me. That's how I make my living. lol

  • The real truth is, this guy is a PRO and yes you can DIY, but it will not come out the same and it's just better to pay a pro unless you just cant afford it.

  • Fantastic teacher Laurier. I have watched this video over and over its amazing how fast and clean you do your work. I showed my wife a couple of your videos. We both wish you lived in our area to hire you to finish our basement drywall :) Thanks for posting these useful videos

  • @Cluckpine Thank you. I do enjoy my work. Where do you folks live? I enjoy doing basements.

  • @drywallgall We live in Armstrong BC Canada, second coating today. Were are you ?

  • @Cluckpine I live in a small town south of Ottawa Ontario. I wish you success in your drywall taping project. I have 2- 30 minute dvds on how to do the first second and 3rd coat on basement drywall butt joints, factory joints, corners ,inside and outside, and screws. They were on line for a while. Did you folks get a chance to see them? I wish I could fly there and do your basement for you.

  • Laurier, do you ever skim coat entire walls for customers? If there is a lot of damage to a plaster wall for example.

  • @Kb2783 Yes I do skim coat entire walls especially if the sun shines on it. If you want to repair damaged walls, I would prime them first before skimming. Drywall mud sticks very well to primer.

  • Your video has been very educational and is much appreciated.

I went to check out trowels but i ran into a snag on what kind get a curved or finish trowel. What kind do you recommend.

    Thank you

  • @Trazdar I recommend a finish trowel. I don't use curved trowels at all.

    Your welcome.

  • Why don't you use a mud stick?

  • @golambretta I' sorry but I don't know what a mud stick is.

  • So why didn't you use the quickset here is it because there's so much work that it wouldn't matter what the drying time is??

  • @Vpopov81 Your right, I didn't use the quickset on the basement because drying time is not an issue. Mixing and cleaning off tools, takes time. With regular drywall mud, I can do bigger jobs.

  • Great job and excellent presentation. What is your opinion of using the tape wet. I've heard that some mudders prefer this. I am about to tape my basement for the first time and I see from your video you do not wet the tape.

  • @mbkirk Thank you very much. I don't know why some tapers wet the tape but if you find out, please let me know. I've been doing this with dry tape for 25 years. I hope that I have not been doing it wrong. lol

  • We see that you are a master with paper tape, as it's what you are used to, but what is your personal opinion of mesh tape? You never have really said exactly what you think of mesh tape...

  • @Kb2783 I have only used mesh tape once. I liked it on the joints but didn't like it for doing inside corners.I had to do an extra coat to take the ripples out of the inside corners.

  • @bradmacaboy Yes you have that right, coating over wet tape can cause the tape to bubble up in areas. I believe that mesh tape works for some people so that they don't get bubbles. I personally stick to paper tape since that is what I've used for 25 years. Just understand that the mud is your glue for paper tape. If there is a spot that doesn't have mud to glue it to the wall, it will cause a bubble that would need to be addressed.

  • @eddie1278 I thank you very much for your opinion of my qualifications. I do try hard not to cover your electrical boxes with drywall or filling them with mud. lol

  • Excellent! I'll be keeping an eye on eBay.

  • @barrettneil My tech person is working on it.

  • not bad... how come you dont hold the tape with you left hand, wipe the bottem half of the tape with your trowel, wipe the excess on the section you just wiped. then you never need to to put your trowel down, and you dont have to hold the tape with you hawk when you wipe it? Also using the length of the trowel when applying the mud instead of the width, allows you to go a lot farther with a trowel load. but one of the better tapers on here for sure

  • @rogy31 Thank you very much. You are obviously very familiar with this trade. The pro tapers that I used to work with tried to teach me the technique that you are describing but I never grasped it so I have had to put my tools down. I do appreciate your comment though. I like hearing from pros like yourself.

  • Hi Laurier

Soon as you have your DVDs on ebay I will order, at $20.00 plus shipping that seem like a very fear price..

I like to go back and watch you video again and again I find it helps me see more of your technique

so far I find your technique is what I like the most , no extra tools and gadget just your hawk and knives very cool

    Regards

    Collin from NB

  • @Collinoulton Thank you Collin for your feedback. I want to be fair. We just need some time to figure this out. Connecting to E-bay and paypal is the goal for us right now.

  • Sell the DVD on eBay. That way we can use paypal.

  • @barrettneil Yes that is the way that my technical person wants to set it up. Thanks for confirming that it is the best way of doing this.

  • @barrettneil My technical person is working on it. I would like to bring you the 2 clips of second coating and 2 clips of finish coating a basement as soon as we figure this out.

  • Ahh, I get it. So, you realized by the positive responses you were getting on YouTube that there was potential for profit from your instruction. I suppose I don't blame you.

  • @Kb2783 About 14 years ago, I made a 45 minute VHS tape that I sold for $20.00 with all the information that I now have on the series of basement drywall taping and coating on DVD. I used to do in store demos and the home shows. Now I'm trying to learn to do it with DVDs.

  • I'm still not sure how a company could benefit from your videos being removed, but I'll take your word for it. I just really enjoy watching them and I have a friend who was wanting to see them.

  • @Kb2783 Tonight I managed to put all 7 clips on basement drywall taping, 1 clip on mud control and 2 more clips on cornerbead coating on 2 disks. Now we have to learn how to get these to people securely at a price of $20.00 plus postage.

  • INCREDIBLE VIDEO..RIGHT ON

  • @MenacesMusic77 Thank you!

    @drywallgall

  • Laurier, I don't understand. Someone paid you to remove the videos temporarily? The money is worth more than helping teach the art?

  • @Kb2783 This is only temporary at this point. The company that paid me doesn't have to compete with my instructions. I have to learn how to make a little money for producing the instructions so that I don't have to take money for removing them. Both my work load and the company's has increased since they were removed.

  • That's great! I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for them.

  • @barrettneil We are working on it.

  • BTW, would you consider putting your videos on a DVD and selling it? I'd love to have all your demos on one disk!

  • @barrettneil We are considering grouping the videos and present them for sale. They won't fit on one disk. It will take some time for me to figure it out along with fair prices.

  • You have the best technique and demonstrations by far on here. Can't wait to get the other videos back again. Thanks.

  • @barrettneil I thank you for your feedback. This is important to me. In time there will be more videos.

  • Where did your other videos go?!

  • @Kb2783 I was paid to remove them until the end of May.

  • Great info !

  • @MrMADMOFO Thanks

  • @THRASHERVOLUME I'm not sure what that means. lol

  • Haha! You deleted that comment about the car bondo. That's hilarious. By the way, I tried using a trowel instead of a knife, and WOW! you are good. I was terrible with it. No control. I'm back to the knives. Lol

  • @Kb2783 The bondo thing was funny. I have friends who use the knives instead of a trowel. They get the same results as I do so it does come down to preference.

  • What's about the longest stretch that you will tape a horizontal factory joint without starting a new piece of tape??

  • @Kb2783 I've taped factory joints as long as 24' to 30' in one piece.

  • No small 6" or 8" knives at all? A 4x12 trowel will do it all??

  • @Kb2783 I do use a 4" knife and a 6" knife. These tools and instructions won't be uploaded until the end of may .

  • What size trowel do you use to set tape? And to finish? Do you only use trowels for the most part?

  • @Kb2783 I use a 4'x12' trowel to do the first coat taping. The same trowel is used for the finish coat as well.

  • great video. my good buddy tapes this way and has excellent results. he uses a hawk, one trowel, two knives (4" and 6") and a few corner tools. always keeps the clients happy , and its qwik. this video is well articulated and helpful. thanks

  • @emigrantgap Thank you. Your friend has the exact tools that I start an apprentice with. That's all that you really need. I'm happy to help.

  • Well I think that's amazing and very generous of you. I am a painter by trade but I also do small drywall jobs as well. To me, even house painting is an art form and I have painted some very beautiful homes in the Midwest. I can tell drywall finishing is an art to you and I appreciate your passion for it. A job worth doing I worth doing right! Thank you again sir, for your generosity.

  • @Kb2783 I must agree with you. Painting is truely an art. I'm a taper and have never painted. I leave that to the pros like you. I fully and completely respect excellent painters like yourself and their art form. I wish you success in your drywall projects and I thank you for your opinion and your kind words.

  • Thanks so much. The real question is, who taught you? Lol

  • @Kb2783 The man who hired me at the age of 18 and became my teacher for 2 1/2 years is named Jeff Servage. He was an excellent taper and friend. I joined the commercial drywall taper's union in my area where I worked with over 50 different tapers over a period of 8 years. Every taper that I met, taught me something new. I've been self employed for over 14 years now. I now share my knowledge with everyone.

  • If you have a butt joint against a factory joint, would you fill the bevel first and let it dry then mud and tape or tape while the fill mud is still wet?

  • @Kb2783 You can tape coat a butt joint against a factory joint even if the mud that fills the bevel is still wet.
