I watched this again last night. I hadn't seen it in years and it is such a wonderful overlooked gem. The young boys name is Thelonius Bernard and he and Diane Lane were brilliant. The original score won an Oscar for composer Georges Delarue. If you haven't seen this film SEE IT. It's a forgotten classic. I was so thrilled when I recieved it for Xmas!

Diane Lane looks so different in this movie than she looked in movies that she made only a few years later like "The Outsiders" and "Streets of Fire." She obviously grew up but it's almost like watching two different people.

Yes, I just looked the movie up at my local library, and it's based on the novel: E=mc2, mon amour / by Patrick Cauvin. My library doesn't have an English translation of the book though.
